WTF Happened To The Blob?

When THE BLOB first appeared in 1958, the creature was presented in very simple ways. It was just some silicone that had been dyed red. For some shots, it was a balloon that had red silicone smeared on it. But when THE BLOB was remade in 1988, the creature got a substantial upgrade. The special effects artists working on the remake were able to make the Blob even more dangerous and frightening. And that helped the film become one of the most popular remakes ever made. So let’s look back at the making of THE BLOB ‘88 and find out WTF Happened To This Horror Movie?
WATCH OR OWN THE FILM HERE: amzn.to/3QPYQ7Y
Written by Emilie Black
Narrated by Jason Hewlett
Edited by Joe Wilson
Produced by Lance Vlcek and John Fallon
Executive Producer by Berge Garabedian
SERIES SYNOPSIS: Hollywood has had its fair share of historically troubled productions. Whether it was casting changes, actor deaths, fired directors, in-production rewrites, constant delays, budget cuts or studio edits, these films had every intention to be a blockbuster but were beset with unforeseen disasters. Sometimes huge hits, sometimes box office bombs. Either way, we have to ask: What Happened To This Horror Movie?

Originality is important when u r making a remake, because there must be a reason as to why someone would appreciate a remake, and that reason is that the remake is at least somewhat different from the original project. Because otherwise there would be more reason to settle with the original project over the remake. Why watch the remake, if the remake is exactly like the original? 😅😅😅 but ofc elitist movie goers want everyone to be convinced that the best way to make a remake of a movie, is to make it exactly like the original master pice. Because originality is dead, and that people would just rather watch the same exact movies over and over again.

That's because they used to remake movies that had potential but failed to live up to it due to budget, censorship, bad script, bad directing, or just never got the exposure. Nowadays they remake already good and popular movies. I mean, I think Night of the Creeps is something that could be remade or Brain Damage or Basket Case, but they'll probably not do that.

The Blob, both the original and the 88 reboot, were two of my favorite horror movies growing up (Along with Creature from the Black Lagoon, which has yet to be remade thank god). The original still has the idealistic 50s charm, But this is one of the best remakes of all time, with loads of 80s swagger. so frickin cool.

Not sure what happened to that comment.... But yes, I was going to add an asterisk, that Del Toros "Shape of Water" is sort of a spiritual homage to "Creature", and while he did toy with the notion of remaking the original for many years, "Shape of Water" is not a direct remake. That being said, it is a masterpiece in it's own right.

Back in 1988 this movie was a sleeper. I recall seeing this in the multiplex in Michigan. Summertime in Michigan is the season of outdoor activities..so sitting in a dark cinema was not a big draw. Had this film been released in the fall..I'm sure they might have had a bigger hit. But, all in all...this movie was a real thrill. Great special effects and a diverse cast. I must have viewed it about 6 or 7 times in the theater. But the Blockbuster era was where it really took off....a real treat to watch on a rainy night on your home Sony TV...those were the days. Thanks for the recap...love the channel..great perspective of one of my favorite flicks.

Seems like in the 80s they nailed 3 remakes of the most popular 50s horror films. The Fly, The Thing and The Blob. The answer to why they were so good is simply because they had updated them in the right way, by not copying everything shot for shot. Oh and the special effects on all these movies were incredible and still look great. Practical Is photorealistic, CGI always looks off, the lighting and movement is inorganic and on top of that the actors aren’t reacting to anything and it shows.
@kri249

The 80s actually nailed a few 50s remakes. Some I'm still discovering were actually remakes. And totally agree with practical effects. I loathe CGI and hollywoods overuse of it. Especially since now most movies look more like videogames than actual movies.

It is extremely similar in characters and structure to the original, it even uses dialogue and audio clips from the original, but it is not a remake. Not according to the creators and producers and the shepherds of this franchise. But one could say that it is technically a remake. So like I said, I agree and I disagree. I hear this so many times about marketing films, specifically older films, that the reason they didn't do well was because the studio didn't market it very much. How does that even happen? Any film that a studio makes, big or small, should be properly marketed so they can return on their investment. It's just common sense. If you make a film, market the hell out of it. And that goes for all the films that your studio makes. I just don't understand how stuff like this has ever or continues to still happen.

My idea would be that the blob was thawed out in the 70s sequel ( son of blob). They escaped but was captured again then meadows captured it (which leads into the 80s remake) .
