I used to sell crocheted hats at festivals. that situation changed. I'm 71 and moved to a new community a couple years ago. Ive connected with my local library and teach two classes a month. I found a local charity which supports foster mom's. I spend the year crocheting all kinds of things for the children. my items are soft and are safe for traumatized children. last Christmas I gave them Six boxes. I'm also trying to connect with women who need the many benefits of crochet. I think of us as soldiers who help mend a bruised world!

this is so beautiful and I hope I can do this more in my life. i also sell crochet hats at festivals. currently I make winter clothes for the homeless but it's slow going and gets expensive so I only make a few things a year! i get yarn donations from people sometimes but a lot of the time the yarn just isnt ideal for winter, but i make do how i can. I wish more people thought like you!

I am 81 and had not done any crocheting in 15 years or more. My daughter found some of the yarn and WIPs I had stored. She encouraged me to take it up again. Now I have even more yarn. My BP is high right now and, crocheting relaxes me and lowers my BP. Thanks for encouraging all who discover you.🩷

I've been crocheting for just over a year and I recently picked up knitting about a month ago. One of the things I have noticed is that it helps me be less of a perfectionist! Making mistakes isn't as intimidating as it used to be because I can trust myself to fix and work through them. I also have grown closer with my grandparents, since we now have a hobby in common. We talk about what projects we are working on and my grandma even sends me posts on instagram of projects she wants to start! So grateful I picked up this hobby!

My mother told me once that I picked up a crochet hook when I was 4. I watched her for a while then actually started to be like mommy and chain stitch. I'm a South paw so it was a challenge learning that way. When I was 16 I asked her to teach me how to read a pattern I found in one of her books. She's 80 and has dementia now, but she remembers how to crochet. I'm over 50 now. I'm thankful I have this time with her and grateful for the lifelong skill. I'm actually thinking of starting an etsy store.

I have never been able to just sit and watch TV. I have done a lot of different crafts while watching TV in the evenings but never stuck with anything. I started playing video games while watching. I felt so unproductive 😮. Then I remembered the time years ago when my Mother-In-Law helped me crochet a little Santa and 2 little Snowmen, one Christmas. [I to this day still sit them out at Christmas] So I went to You Tube! It started with making “plarn” sleeping mats for the homeless. I had so many people collecting plastic bags and cutting them up for me. Then my charity for the homeless closed down during Covid. So now I am making toys for my 9 grandchildren. My once blanket cabinet is my yarn storage. I have not felt like I am sitting wasting time at all in the past 8 years. You are right! Life changing!

There are only so many crocheted blankets you need to make for your grandchildren, especially when you live in the south! So the way crochet has changed my life is that I’ve joined a group that gets together weekly to crochet baby afghans for the local pregnancy center. We talk about everything, help each other out with crochet problems, and also teach new members of our group how to crochet. It’s become so much a part of my life that I plan the rest of my life around it.

I learned to crochet by sitting and watching my Nanny. She was incredibly gifted and was the center of my world. I would crochet off and on from the age of 12 on. I was diagnosed with RA, Lupus and Lymes disease within a few years of each other. One of the significant side effects is anxiety and depression. I found that crocheting and watching my hands move brought me a calmness that I didn't feel otherwise. I NEED to touch my crocheting every day to bring myself peace.

I've been crocheting for like 6 years now. One thing I'm very certain of, is that crochet gave me space to think and to heal. Before I started crocheting I used to spend my days scrolling on Instagram/Facebook. I did have other hobbies like playing the piano or make digital art. But those things weren't repetitive to me. I had to concentrate on what I was doing with those hobbies. Crochet is very repetitive and I can just let my mind wander. So every time I crochet I just go into this meditative state and also think about philosophical subject a lot. Which allows me to heal my inner child and feel happier overall 😇❤️

I’ve been crocheting for a few years but I’ve been chronically ill for 14 years now and crafting/creating things has helped me get through some of the hardest things that I’vehad to go through. I started out making bracelets in the hospital for nurses and staff with knots and embroidery thread. I did that for a few years then I did the rainbow loom rubber band bracelets when they were popular and now I crochet and try to sell some of the things I make because of my condition it makes it hard for me to have any sort of ‘real’ job. I've found that crocheting is an outlet for my creativity. I suffer from severe depression (and have to take meds) but having something to complete keeps me going. Having another crochet project I'm thinking of while I'm working on my current one gives me something to look forward to. My current project is a pullover (I think Americans call it a sweater vest) that I started to finish off all the 4-ply baby yarn I'd used to make a small blanket. Of course the thing got away from me and I ended up having to buy more yarn - and it's still not done! But I'm getting there. :)

I started knitting (I also crochet now as well) after a beloved pet died because I wanted something to take my mind off of the stress and grief. It's turned into a great way to challenge myself, especially as I now prefer crochet (though I still like knitting!), and it's helped drastically reduce my anxiety. Even if sometimes I struggle to focus enough to count stitches, the familiarity of them (especially HDC and TC, my favorite stitches) means that I can just sit there and repeat the steps in my head and then make something great, like a cowl or a series of granny squares. And taking something like stress/grief/anxiety/illness and turning it into something beautiful feels very powerful.

Hi Elise! I thought I was the only one who lets the housework go so I can crochet or knit! I have decided, especially now in my old age, not to pass up having at least some enjoyment during each day. This is because of something my mother said to me several weeks before she passed away from ovarian cancer. I came home from a long day at work and a dreadful commute. My Dad cooked dinner before I got home, and the kitchen was a disaster. As I was cleaning up the mess, my mother called me to her room and told me she wanted me to sit with her for a while. I said, "Mom, I will just as soon as I finish cleaning the kitchen." My mother was always a stickler for a clean kitchen. She answered me with the most profound wisdom I have ever heard: "All my life I have pushed dirt away from me, and now they are going to bury me in six feet of it." You can bet that I stopped cleaning the kitchen and kept her company! When she dozed off, I finished the kitchen and went to bed. I share that piece of wisdom with other people I know who think the house needs to be pristine. If someone comes and makes a comment, I can always hand them the vacuum cleaner and a dust cloth and say, "Have at it, Baby!"

One super cool thing I learned was that while knitting can be done by machine crochet cannot. Crochet is always handmade. That makes it super special to me. Knitting is pretty, but I LOVE crochet (which is also pretty)! Crochet has always been soothing when I have been the lowest and exciting when life was pretty good. I have made commissioned projects, consigned some items at art shops, and sold a few patterns as well. As I was watching this I am working on the Persian Tiles Throw by Janie Crowfoot with glee! The colors of the yarn and the intricate details make me purr like a cat! The crochet life ROCKS!

LOL@ "I crochet toys in my basement" doesn't make people want to get to you know you. All that means is we just connect with others of like mind! :D My mom taught me to crochet when I was a little girl. I lost the skill over the years when I became an avid needleworker/cross stitch. But when I wanted to get back in to it, she came to some classes with me and fully supported my return to learning crochet. Now, it's something else we have in common and when all else fails "Meet me in the Hobby Lobby yarn dept!" and then we do lunch. I love that we have that closeness over a shared love of yarn and crochet. She knits too and I want to learn that as well. Great video!

We live in a Universe filled with Miracles and Crocheting (Knitting) is part of that phenomenon where we can take yarn (string) and create something beautiful with it! Then, there is the Inner Miracle that transpires as the yarn makes its way through our fingers onto the hook or needles and gradually transforms into a work of art! Yes, you are so right. Crocheting or Knitting does change our life! This phenomenon continues to manifest itself as generations of crocheters and knitters have touched the lives of others through Charitable Giving of the works of art we create with our hooks and needles! Thank you for sharing not these "weird" but these "Miraculous" ways yarn can change the innermost recesses of our lives! How wonderful that we can wake up to this wonderful Miracle every day!!!

I crocheted alot when I was a young girl when I learned from our neighbors on the stoops of Brooklyn NY. I started learning to read patterns and made several beautiful blankets for my first son from a 1940's crochet book! Raising 3 sons time was tight and I had a hard time reading patterns again. I'm older, kids grown and I read an article about a man in prison who learned to crochet and how it keeps him calm and it reignited my passion and I have been focusing on working out patterns and I'm back in the mix! It took focus and practice and lots of mistakes and perseverance and I very much enjoy you and your channel 😉

I began with knitting about 14 years ago. When I received the happy news that I was about to become an aunt my immediate though was YAY! My second thought was "I gotta learn to knit! Every kid needs a crazy knittining obsessed aunty, and I'm already crazy and very crafty so that'll be me!" Crochet came after and my initial desire to learn to crochet came from knitting patterns that had and element of crochet to it. But then as I learned I found that then it comes to shape and form there are things you can do with crochet that you just can't do with knit. I really have a head for geometry and math and I find it so easy, almost natural to freestyle with crochet and create something just based on an idea and a shape. I struggle with anxiety and being at social events and gathering with many people make me uncomfortable. Having an knit or crochet project along really helps, stops me from fidgeting, it calms me down. But it at also works as sort of shield and positive barrier. It is a great conversation starter for people, and removes some of the focus away from my person and it becomes easier to talk about first the actual project, then knit/crochet in general and from there on hobbies and crafts. It also makes traveling on the subway a lot more comfortable for me, I have had countless wonderful conversations with elderly people admiring my work and praising that the younger generations are keeping the craft alive. If only they knew how much those conversations means to someone like me, that they have just changed a dreaded and draining trip on the subway to a positive and energizing one. There was also that one time this severely hungover and probably stoned student droped down on the seat next to me, sending my anxiety through the roof. And then he looked at my knitting, "wha's that?" "I'm knitting." "Oooooh...." and he just stares at it and the needles moving "whicked...." and he keeps following the movements of the needles with his eyes "wow..." and I realized he was being hypnotized by the repeated motion of the needles...

My mindset is so good because of crochet I managed to bag myself a huge promotion at work and part if the reason is self belief. "Hey, what are you knitting?" *Your face there was an entire mood, and I am here for it.* I don't think I ever didn't know the difference, and it doesn't *bother me*-bother me, but at the same time, it's like, you always hear the phrase "knitting needleS," so why would someone think it's knitting when there's only one?? How has crocheting changed my life? Man . . . Well, first, it's let me connect with people like you. Before I started this, if I'd come across one of your videos, I probably would have watched it, went, "That's awesome, I wish I crocheted. I should learn someday," but ultimately went on with my life. But now I get to connect with people who have this same hobby/business/crafting lifestyle, and it's bee awesome seeing what other people create, and letting them see what I create. Second, it's not an income I could rely on for the year, but I have made an income with this. I've put myself out there to sign up as a con vendor, and people really seem to love my work. Third, it's helped my creative process. I used to have the mindset of, "Okay, this is great, I'm gonna do [insert ambitious project here]!!" Part way through, I'd be chastising myself because omg, I'm in over my head, this isn't gonna look anything like what I want it to, this is gonna be horrible. But if I forced myself through, I was usually pretty happy with the results. Crochet, I'm basically at that, "Yeah, this is great, I'm gonna do X," the whole way through. There's no more emotional roller coaster. I think the only negative it's had on my life is that it's yet another sedentary activity and I need to be more active. (Just to note what you said about giving up things you weren't good at the first time trying, I think that's why crochet can be so great. There are so many different levels of mastery to achieve, and if you can do single stitches and understand how turning your work and magic circles and working in the round go, you're good to go. So there's always a level you can achieve, be good at, and be happy with.)

Im 2 years out of a traumatic abusive relationship, being moulded into a zombie after 6 years of having my loves and desires beaten out of me. Crochet was the first hobby I picked up newly single. I was depressed and introverted and didn't really know who I was anymore. For the first time, I found joy amongst devastation. It gave me a purpose again, I began to learn what I liked and disliked, took risks trying new things, learned that failure does not equal incompetence. It slowly began to build up my confidence, showed me the importance of self care, and developed into an income earner. It's more than a hobby to fill in time, it's been my therapy.

I started my yarn obsession with loom knitting back in 2018 and it grew from there. Crochet is newer for me but I've always wanted to learn it and I did try as a teen to learn but I didn't really understand it until I started this year. Now I am very much still a beginner but I enjoy learning it. I also completely understand how you feel when someone asks what you are knitting. Coming from loom knitting which is way smaller of a community then crochet; people look 100% confused when they see me loom knitting in public. If they have heard of it they assume it's for kids and all that can be made is hats, and scarves which isn't true at all. I greatly enjoy your videos thank you for all your hard work.

I started as a knitter and decades later I switched to crochet. I became much more productive. Being a continental knitter, the switch as super easy. I only regret that omigarumi wasn't a thing back then as I knit little figures for my kids, including clothing for their cabbage patch dolls. Without any available patterns, crochet would have been so much faster. BTW, my spare bedroom is packed with not just yarn, but also fabric for quilting (yes I've also obsessed with that craft). But crochet is my current hobby as it is so much more useful in everyday life.

It was such an emotional roller-coaster and I was just lost. I picked up crocheting again ( did it as a kid, but only made 2 row bracelets), and completely dove into it. I can honestly say it saved me! And the other 12 you mentioned are me as well. Lol. Thank you for your relatable videos! ❤❤❤

Crochet has taught me a new way to give back. When I retired from being a search and rescue k9 handler I struggled finding something that I could do that gave back. For me volunteering its best when I marry it to something that gives me great joy (obsession). Crochet / knitting is that for me.

I can relate!! I have to share a story from about 30 years ago. (I've now been crocheting for 50 years) Anyhow, back 30 years, my hubby came home from work and saw me crocheting and asked what was I knitting!! I said that it was crocheting, not knitting!! Ah, what's the diff he says. So I explained about knitting needles and crochet hooks ~~ I use a hook, not needles says I. He took a few seconds and looked at me and said ~~ So you're a Hooker!! I'm married to a Hooker!! We LOL'd a long time about that one. 😂 He passed away 22 years ago at age 52 and this memory still makes me laugh..

I too love crocheting much better than knitting if I make a mistake. It’s so much easier to take it out and fix it . I taught myself to crochet when I was about 12 I’m left-handed so I can get kind of frustrating at times . I stopped crocheting for a while, but when my first grandchild was born, my daughter asked me to make a hat I’ve had so much fun crocheting for my grandchildren. I have designed a barnyard AfghanHe had a tractor bed so I made but a barn yard Afghan for his bed turned out so cute. I’ve had lots of people asked me to make things for them. I really enjoy it . still get frustrated at times. Thank goodness for utube

I'm almost 53 and I honestly don't remember a time that I didn't know how to crochet. My mom taught me at a very young age (I actually still have that hook) and from that point on every babydoll and Barbie had clothes, toys and blankets 🙂. Later in life every baby that came into the family had an afghan. Several years ago, due to some major health problems, I had to retire my hooks. The only grandchild that has an afghan made by me if my oldest grandson. Since I couldn't crochet, along with some other issues, I fell into a deep depression. I've just recently decided that I NEED to crochet in order to be happy. So I grabbed some bulky blanket yarn and am waiting for my order of some of the larger hooks (since all of my hooks are some place so safe that I can't find them) and figured that would be a great way to get back into it! 🤷🏼‍♀️

its great to hear that other people fell in love with this hobby. I started to crochet (seriously) two and a half years ago. Just because I heard a motivational podcast about how this covid mumbo jumbo can trigger positive things in us and the woman who talked about it mentioned it as a possible thing. I already knew that, but starting to crochet wasnt a thing I thought about. I learned the basics when I was about 10 (now Im 39) and didnt really think about it since. But then I started to peek into tutorial videos which showed incredibly pretty patterns and amigurumis. So I started to practice again. And after I bought some kits for amigurumis which I successfully finished, I was HOOKED. Which is a very fitting term in sense of crocheting. 😄 So I bought more yarn, different sized hooks and found my favourite hobby. I even infected my sister to start crochet again. And it also changed my life in weird ways. One point I noticed is that I look for yarn in whatever store I am. Even my hubby always tells me HEY, THEY HAVE YARN HERE. Its pure joy whenever I find some. And it took my hubby several months to stop calling it "knitting". 😂 And yes, every movie turns into an audio book as soon as you spend your evening (or night) on the couch crocheting. Its soooo true. 😂 We are going on vacation next week and have to drive for a few hours to get there. And I already know how I will spend those hours. 😁 Its also amazing how EASY this hobby is to do. Basically you just need yarn and a hook. Thats it. I dont really need accessories exept for stitch markers. But with hook and yarn you are good to go. Much much love and greetings from germany, fellow crochet sister 😘

I always hate the "hey, what are you knitting?" question It makes me feel the same as when people ask me "did you draw that?" while my pencil is on the page 😂
