(1308) Review: RCS Jackknife (FPS-7P)

This is a frequently requested review of the RCS Jackknife Lock Pick (FPS-7P) with the composite handle. Weighing in at only 18g (0.5oz), this really is a flyweight tool - yet they didn't cut any corners on either design or quality. Priced at only $24.95, this is one of the bargains of the year. I found mine at: www.lockpicks....

Sweet little pocket carry kit, as you mentioned, maybe not the ideal tool for high security 7 pin locks and such, but perfect for running into common padlocks in your day to day... great review Bill, thanks!

This was actually my first pick set. I picked many locks with this toolkit and I credit this (and you) with sparking my fire with this hobby. It wasn't long after that I started building a set from your recommendations and just from viewing your videos. I still go back to this RCS tool from now and again just for it's size and portability. Great tool, very durable. I have had mine for over a year with no damage or losses.

I bought this about a year ago after watching this while browsing your back catalogue of videos, and it has helped me get several friends into rooms, cabinets and houses when the keys went AWOL.

I bought one, and it really is that light. The tension wrench passes the bang-on-the-table test, as Bill demonstrates, but it only takes very slight pressure for it to pop out. I’m keeping mine in a zippered pocket for now.

There is a specialty lock, and this lock, some say, is impenetrable. Others say it's always open by default, just try engaging the inner mechanics, and it opens up. To some, this lock is a dangerous hindrance, barring them from items and information critical to their very survival. To others, this lock is nothing more than a game. A complex fidget spinner, with no real practical use to be found. It's there to amuse themselves, but opening the lock to access it's content is not a priority. Yet, truth be told, this lock and others like it hold the KEY to our perceived existences. Our personas. Our biases and stereotypes. Our tastes, mannerisms, and beliefs/morals. It's been said that these locked vessels even hold inside them completely different, albeit, equally important locks to other endless Mobius strips of data, most of which we don't yet understand. These. These locked containers are what I wish to access, by ethical or non-ethical means. I don't wish to damage anything while gaining entrance, but if it's life or death on the line, I'll smash a window or set charges on the door to get in by all means necessary to save a fellow human being. These are the locks of addiction. Have you or has anyone you know lost their keys? It's okay to ask for help. Not all of us can pick locks. But everyone of us can pick up the phone. We can pick the right time. We can pick up the pieces, and start again. Don't lose hope. Happiness is there, friend. You just have to figure out how to unlock it.

This is the pick set that I carry with me every day. There are two things that I like about it that you didn't mention, though. First - you can re-arrange the picks so you have your more used ones closer to the outside, if you want. You just need to unscrew the locking bar and take out the bolt, then you can put the picks in any order that you want. I have the normal hook followed by the w-rake, because I use those the most. 2nd - you can purchase different pics to put in the jackknife for a couple of dollars (lockpicktools.com/replacement-folding-pocket-single-picks/). I replaced the ball with another, deeper hook, for example. Thanks for the good review!

@ferguson8143
@ferguson8143 Год назад
Of course not and if you haven't already ordered one then my opinion on on your question is the most important information about this design and the reason I give it one star bc you can't give it o rating and it won't come with any type of instructions whats so ever and even it being as simple as screwing the lever back on to the knife as I have spent triple the time of tring to get it screwed back to the right spot and I have never ever achieved that and never have been so fucking pissed at a lock pick tool in the years I have been locking picking and I still Haye the person who came up with this fcikkng design and hope him the fucking worst
@Requimatic

I ordered an almost-identical Jackknife from Southern Specialties a while back, and I've gotta say.. Don't waste your money on the one from Southern Specialties. Just don't. I was looking for an alternative to my SouthOrd Jackknife due to tension wrench/pick size relative to most keyways I encounter (being too big, that is), so I decided to break down and order one from Southern Specialties. The body itself is the exact same design as this; however, it is aluminum. Worse than that? It was incredibly sharp.. everywhere. I almost sliced my palm open on the thing when I attempted to use it, which was in vain because all of the picks contained within were punched, unfinished everywhere (also VERY sharp), and wouldn't even slide in to a non-tensioned keyway due to the burrs and sharp edges. This thing, though? Looks pretty good. The picks look -substantially- better than the ones housed within the Southern Specialties version; they look finished, at least. Maybe even a higher quality steel. The composite body also looks good.. however it kind of makes me wonder how long it would hold up after continuous use. I still love my SouthOrd Jackknife (and actually have a spare still in the package), use it frequently and even modded it to house a W-rake, but this looks like it would be a pretty nice alternative. I may order one myself and see how well it works in comparison! Anyway, thanks Bill! Great review and great videos in general!

i was excited to watch this one, i love the jack knifes, but i was a bit dissapointed to see its riveted rather than an allen. with some work im sure i could cut that and change it to have freedom of picks in the kit, but i also dont much care for how low the hook sank when you used it. if i ever grab another jackknife ill either grab another cheap chinease one or the southord (i believe it was southord) one.
@bosnianbill
@bosnianbill 6 лет назад
Cdog1019 Are you sure you watched this video? I ask because 100% of your comment is...wrong. First, the jackknife doesn't have a single rivet in it. The locking lever is threaded onto the locking screw and is removeable, so you can change picks whenever you want. Second, the hook did not "sink" when I used it. In fact, all of the picks I used stayed locked in place with no movement at all. As I said in the video, this is one of the best locking mechanisms I've seen on jackknives. Lastly, I would discourage your urge to "grab" cheap Chinese ANYTHING. No matter what it is, you'll be disappointed and find yourself spending MORE money to replace it.
@Cee1019
@Cee1019 6 лет назад
appears i was mistaken then, to me it looked riveted on, also a correction. the one i liked was the multi pick, not the southord jackknife. upon a rewatch i think you locked it a bit downward aswell, my mistake. other than that, though, i have an everyday carry of the cheapo h & h. its not the greatest thing but its served me well, im only an enthusiast though and i havent gone through a very wide variety of locks. happy to see a reply though, love the videos ^_^ *additionaly, having read my own comment i still dont think my sentences are flowing right. my fault for being excited to see another jackknife pick so i squeezed it in while working the graveyard shift, probably didnt help my eyes any on this.

@bosnianbill
@bosnianbill 6 лет назад
It is made by Vargo. They only make 2 knives - a small fixed blade and the pocket knife. I found it on eBay. It takes a bit of work to round off the carbon fiber handles and smooth up the action. Typical mass production finish but cleans up nice.
@MadUncleAndy
@MadUncleAndy 6 лет назад
Thanks! Thought it looked familiar. As it turns out I carry the fixed blade Vargo when I go backpacking. Thanks also for the review! First time I've taken advantage of my Patreon head start. It arrived today, and it's a nice little jackknife kit! Now to see if I can add a cycloid or sinusoid rake blade. :)
