(1314) Massive Mul-T-Lock Padlock (E18H) Picked & Gutted

Recently discontinued by Mul-t-lock, the E18H was the largest padlock they produced. In this video I get it picked and gutted. The company said that manufacturing costs of this padlock had increased so dramatically, they could no longer afford to produce it. If you need one for your collection, better grab it now from eBay.

Great pick Bill, but watching again and looking all the way to the bottom of the comments, I don't see any explanation of the interactive pin. The key looks strange, 4 plus 1 but the lock looks like a normal 5 pin in pin. What does the interactive pin do differently? How does it work?
@bosnianbill
@bosnianbill 6 лет назад
As you saw when I disassembled the lock, it is a normal pin-in-pin in the core. The interactive element is primarily for key control to prevent unauthorized key duplication (because you don't know which interactive element is installed). You can't tell the bitting of the interactive element because it "floats", as I demonstrated.

@RookieLock
@RookieLock 6 лет назад
LOL yeah for the Bible's pleasure ? I also don't see a use for it, but it has to be there for a reason, or Mul-t-Lock wouldn't spend the extra time and money on it.. I was thinking its because the tops of the pins are a little rounded, or for smoother operation, but i really don't know, that's only a guess..

Another nice pick Bill! I'm curious though, what are all the extra holes in the core and the round body of the bible for? They do not seem to serve a purpose. It seems pointless to add them just to reduce the weight of the lock...lol. Thanks again for sharing your expertise with us.

@Nitrxgen

3:37 - actually the Interactive element can have both an innie and an outie (like the other pins) as well as being flat, but the flat is so much more common... the profile of that key is "115" and the suffix of "S" indicates the colour of the active element, S being Silver used for raising the inner and outer equally (flat, pinning Z-0) - there exists "G" (Gold, inner pin higher, pinning Z-1) and also "B" (Black, outer pin higher, pinning A-0); the active elements have 1 depth cut higher than other pins, so Gold pin would have an outer pin a regular zero cut depth with an inner pin a depth above the keyway, Black pin would have an outer pin a cut above the keyway with an inner pin a regular zero cut depth - when i say a cut depth above the keyway, i mean according to specification measurements of course, hope this makes sense, i'm super tired right now - for more infos/pictures/diagrams, look for a PDF titled "Mul-T-Lock: Design and Security" on lockpickingforensics.com (under Articles in the menu) it's got everything you need to know :)
@bosnianbill
@bosnianbill 6 лет назад
Thanks for the technical info. I've looked through all of my Mul-t-locks (I have 8 KD) and it looks like they all have the "silver" (flat) element. I don't think I've seen the "gold" or "black" yet.
@Assorted12
@Assorted12 6 лет назад
So what exactly does the interactive pin do? It seemed to be picked just like any other. Almost easier because it was not a pin in pin.

Bill, if LPL asked his RAMSET to go up against this lock, I'm pretty sure it would ...piss itself. Great pick, and even greater, CLEAN gutting!
@johnrobinson357
@johnrobinson357 6 лет назад
I think you may be surprised at how much force a ramset can make. Maybe. It would with the highest power load, at least deform it badly enough to make it unusable/openable. There are .38 cal ramsets as well..
@bosnianbill
@bosnianbill 6 лет назад
Offhand, I say it would fail, even with the heaviest loads. Based on the mass of hardened steel I'd be willing to bet this lock would withstand ANY pistol bullet, and MOST rifle bullets. I've shot locks with .308 NATO and, not counting armor piercing rounds, I;m pretty confident it would withstand any soft nosed .308. And NO, I will not do it because these locks are waaayyyy too expensive to shoot up just to satisfy your curiosity. Of course, if you want to BUY one and send it to me, I'd be HAPPY to shoot YOUR lock.😃
@johnrobinson357
@johnrobinson357 6 лет назад
You've had it in your hands, and i well remember your lock " targets " I'll take your word on it. If i had cash to burn i would be happy to send one your way, but i do not so i will not - sorry.
@tuba7084
@tuba7084 6 лет назад
LPL used the Ramset on I think it was the Abus Rock and it took multiple hit to gain entry to that lock. I don’t think that lock is half the size of this massive lock and I bet that case is extremely durable on that Multilock padlock.

I don't really get what the interactive pin does. Could somebody explain that? I don't have any multi locks but i do have the picks for it so im down for a challenge
@Phred_Phlintstoner
@Phred_Phlintstoner 6 лет назад
lifelessdead89 all it does is makes it impossible to make your own key without an interactive key. You can file the warding into a flat piece of metal and drill holes to match the other pins... But that interactive bit makes it hard to drill it out as you would actually have to add metal instead. So instead of making a key from scratch or from one of the clones you now HAVE to buy from mtl itself. So long explanation short: key control.

I am no expert but a logical thinker, all these lock picking videos I have seen they all have the key so before they start the pick they have a good idea what is inside ie the pin configuration, and surely that gives them a head start, a kind of heads up cheat.
@bosnianbill
@bosnianbill 6 лет назад
Yes, there are occasions when knowing the bitting of the key could help you, usually locks that have standard pins that give little or no feedback. Still, you'd have to be incredibly talented to replicate what you see on a key with a pick inside of a keyway. It helps, but not nearly as much as you might think. Fortunately, most locks like the one in this video "talk" to you, providing different types of feedback that identify the type of pin, and whether or not it is set correctly. It is the learning of this feedback, as well as developing the skills to attack those pins successfully, that makes this hobby so fun and interesting. As a logical thinker, I urge you to try looking at a key for a simple lock, then try to pick it - you'll quickly find that theory is VERY different than practice. Also, there is a branch of the hobby called "challenge locks", where another lock picker custom builds a lock and sends it to you. The key is mummied so you can't see it. Your ability to pick the lock depends entirely on your skills. I'm a logical thinker too. Winning NASCAR must be very easy because all you do is drive around a known track really fast. In theory, that is a cheat. Also, winning at Wimbleton must be easy too. All you do is hit the ball within a known court, right? Cheat. Lastly, I know the theory of long range shooting. It is easy. The range at Camp Perry is exactly 1000 yards, so I should be able to win that with no problem, right? Probably not. Theory is MUCH different than practice.

There's always a few people who believe that lockpicking videos, or videos that expose vulnerabilities or bypasses in locks, are somehow enabling the criminal element. They might be, but they're also educating consumers and manufacturers as well.

General advice around here is don't use anything too big or flashy on your farm gates and sheds. Not unheard of for people to be targeted because they have massive huge locks on all their buildings. Obviously there's stuff worth having behind the hundred quid lock. Farmers around here tend to go with basic stuff (frankly. If I want your gate open, I'll drive through it or take it off its hinges) So the goal is more dissuade the opportunistic pikeys, the organised ones will take your shit no matter what, which is where good CCTV, security lighting, a big noisy dog and a large gun come into play.
@bosnianbill
@bosnianbill 6 лет назад
The thing about gate locks is that they live in the elements, so need some kind of corrosion resistance. Regular pin tumblers will corrode over time and fail. Also, a gate can easily be climbed over, so what you are really trying to do is keep people from driving THROUGH an open gate. Oliver is correct in one respect, the Abloys are DESIGNED to withstand HORRIBLE weather, and will last forever. The PL362, priced at $275, is a bit of overkill tho. Take a look at the PL330, which sells for about $50 at Walmart.

You need to prioritize! Here's my advice. Take up lock picking. Keep on shooting and fishing.
