I have owned several table saws in my lifetime and I have enjoyed using them. However, now I am in a smaller space surrounded by neighbors so I am much more conscience of the dust and noise a table saw can create. So I started thinking about alternative ways to cut primarily sheet goods.
What I decided to do was revisit using a circular saw along with a cutting guide (that's clamped in place). I have used this combination years ago and was always very happy with the results. What's old is new again so I'm back at it and still very happy with the results.

Cutting Guide
----------------------
Here's a link to a cutting guide similar to the one shown in the video: amzn.to/2V7tbIf
I have been using Ryobi 18v tools for years; back when they were using NiCad batteries. I was very pleased when they came out with the Lithium Ion batteries because these new batteries worked with my old tools!
I bought 2 Lithium Ion batteries in a tool combo kit which included a drill, impact driver, batteries, and charger. Here's a link to this kind of kit: amzn.to/3xyeefo
The circular saw that I am using is the old saw from the combo kit from the NiCad days. Here's a link to the updated saw (does not include a battery): amzn.to/3Ao9gnk .
I also have a jigsaw ( amzn.to/3AlPKI0 ) and a sander ( amzn.to/3AiXJW4 ).
All of these tools (plus a whole bunch more) use the same battery! I have been very happy with these tools and I recommend them.

Also, feel free to check out my review video here: • 86. WEN 10 inch drill ... . I have been using this drill press for quite a while and I recommend it.
Here is a link to my favorite hearing protection ear muffs: amzn.to/2ZiPh8T
I find as I get older, I have less tolerance for loud noises. Whenever I am in my shop using a loud power tool like the BladeRunner or a shop vac, I wear these earmuffs.
Speaking of the BladeRunner, here's a link to learn more about it: amzn.to/2NwuVWZ

Thanks for this. I use a Kreg edge guide most of the time and the system you're using when the cut goes beyond 18 or so inches (the Kreg gets wobbly after 20). I have one of those saw track setups you can get at Lowes. It's terrible. Now I see you doing it and wish I had a cordless circular saw. :)

Hello Aaron. I've never tried using an edge guide because many times I need to make a cut on a board that does not already have a smooth or straight edge. Making the cuts the way I show, the edge of the board doesn't matter; it doesn't need to be straight or smooth. In fact the edge could be deliberately curved! The accuracy of the cut really only depends on how accurately you place the guide. I've thought about trying a track saw; I've gone back and forth on the idea but still haven't bought one. I guess I can't justify (for me) spending the money when I can just use the guide. The cordless saw I'm using is made by Ryobi and uses a 5.5" blade (the blade I'm using is the blade it came with!). I'm using a small amp hour battery (1.3Ah, 18volts) to help keep the weight of the saw low. I have 2 batteries so when I'm using one, the other one is in the charger. When the battery I'm using won't run the saw anymore (because it needs to be charged) I just swap the batteries and get back to work. Having a 2nd battery always charged has worked out really well for me over the years. I put links to the Ryobi tools I use in the video description. Thanks for your comment and for watching.

Thanks for this. I prefer to use the two bits of plywood glued n screwed on top of each other to make a more permanent guide. I’m sure you know this method? It saves all the set up and measuring. You could screw your metal edge to ply to make the Sam thing.

Yes, I have seen folks make and use this type of guide. I should probably make one (or 2; one long and the other shorter). Thanks for the suggestion and for watching.

Good informational video Matt. Is the guide a piece of scrap metal or did you purchase it as a designated saw guide?

Hi Frank. The guide I use in the videos is a purchased guide I've had for years. I talk about it in detail in the previous video at the 2:57 mark. Here's the link to that video if you want to check that out: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-1DlSN678Ubg.html . Also in the video description, there is a link to a similar guide. Thanks for your comment and for watching.
