In this "Adventure Series" Episode, I venture out on a kayak to experience first hand how hard it is to see a great white shark from the water's surface. An unexpected large shark appears just as our communications break down.

This was a great day out on the water and an amazing experience. The main issue was difficult comms - we were not hearing most of the messages, and therefore not hearing the instructions of where the shark was. Secondly the Gropro was attached to an old Telescopic pole that we found in the garage that morning. When I pulled open the pole to film the shark, the GoPro Hero 10 just popped off the end. Thinking it was just baby GWs (which we had been seeing for days), I was about to go and retrieve it. Then we got a garbled message that the shark was larger than expected, a lot larger.... so obviously I didn't get in. What you are hearing from the comms is Malibu Artist speaking into the radio recorded into a camera, that's not what we were receiving. I saw the shark and was very surprised that it was as big as my boat, that got the heart going. We were with the shark for quite some time. It was curious but very calm. There was a small seal on shore, which we think it had followed into the bay. Obviously, the more exciting commentary has made the cut, but it was a truly amazing experience to kayak with such a large shark. For all those being critical about my preparation or reaction. You're right, I should have checked that GoPro, but it was only a last min decision to go out on kayaks to see the baby sharks. We literally put a load of kit in the car and went out that morning. Fortunately I had a second Gopro and filmed the shark. Yes polarized lens would have been very useful too, the shark was mainly deep and the low angle from the kayak, makes seeing it very difficult. You get a much better perspective from the drone. Most swimmers / surfers often don't see sharks swimming around them until they are very close. Finally, a shark cannot sense your heartbeat through a plastic kayak (some funny comments on this). It really goes to show that sharks are curious, but not monsters that attack anything. I look forward to going out again. Big thanks to the Malibu Artist and Dronsey. Amazing week filming sharks!

@@ejbah1 it’s called anxiety. Without it, the human species would be nothing more than an oblivious entree in the food chain and never survive. I get the same feeling daily about lot’s of things that never happen. Was surfing last night just blocks from where a guy was attacked by a white a few weeks ago. Had that “feeling” while sitting there waiting for sets to arrive and kept looking all around nervously. I’m will keep having that feeling forever because I’m a self aware entree. 😳

When snorkeled at 14 mile marker in West Maui, I often felt that sharky feeling in the deeper drop offs. I saw many small reef sharks. Once, in a deep hole within the shallow coral reef, I had an intense feeling as I swam off the shallow into the deep 10ft or there abouts. I had to calm myself as I knew this reaction of my body to unseen danger. Then I caught a glimpse of a large tiger shark darting thru an opening in reef that lead to the deeper waters. It was exhilarating to say the least

As a teen and into my 20's I dove at Point Loma, La Jolla Cove, and all points in between, plus the most intense dive I ever did was out at Cortes Bank. I would see huge Nurse sharks , an occasional Tiger sharks and lots of smaller Leopard sharks at various times. In the northern part of the gulf of California off of Baja, the common thing to see was Hammerheads. Then in the military I did a lot of diving in the Caribbean and on both sides of Panama, most of the time I saw Lemmon sharks and hammerheads. But the one shark that I never did see was the Great White in all of that diving in prime Shark locations. That in my mind is is a true testament to their stealth and ability to not be seen.

So, 20 years ago you wouldn't swim by them, but now you would? I ask in jest because they aren't any less dangerous today. I'm well aware that a lot of attacks have been blamed on whites, when it was a bull shark. The most dangerous factor with any shark is its curiosity, which whites are super curious, and they test by taste. Sure you might not die from a white attack and a bull will tear you apart, but I like my body parts and am not looking to shed any or rearrange them...lol

You guys are certifiable. Yeah, most white are just cruising and stuff. But still....it's a big NOPE for me. Mostly because I live in Florida and our sharks are way more aggressive towards kayakers, typically. Love your work, though! Incredible.

well you guys get a lot of bull sharks. those are often overly aggressive.

Is that not because a lot of kayaks in Florida are fishing kayaks? And therefore stink of bait and dead fish? Any footage I see of sharks showing aggression towards kayaks it’s someone fishing

@@FrozenSurf Precisely! Most ocean kayakers (as opposed to sea kayakers, i.e., closed cockpit kayaks) here in SoCal are kayak fishermen. And I mean like 90+ %. I used to ocean kayak a lot in these waters, between 2005 and 2010, crossing the channel to Catalina four times. Virtually every other ocean kayaker I saw was fishing. This trend has only increased with the introduction of paddle boards. Paddle boarders are usually recreational paddlers, while kayakers usually fish. That, I think, is the reason why the 14-foot GWS in Carlos's video showed interest only in the kayak and not the paddle board (though some people do fish off paddle boards). GWS have learned that ocean kayaks mean fish. I don't mean to suggest that GWS pose a huge risk to ocean kayakers. They don't. As Carlos has shown time and again, GWS are super-careful to the point of paranoia, even with live fish hanging off the side of the kayak (something I personally would not do, though).

Aww 🥰 I loved your best part of the day with your family. Family is what makes everything worthwhile, especially when you have that little happy face and loving eyes adoring every move you make. ❤ Ok, back to the video, you gotta love those big surprises! Your mate was like “Screw the GoPro, that sharks too big and hanging around a bit too much” 😂😂 We still didn’t see an attack, maybe it was startled or became more interested when the GoPro splashed into the water? They don’t want to eat us. Good on you all Carlos, for running this experiment to find out why people don’t see sharks from their Kayaks. At least you know why now. I will look at and sub to your friend Dronsey’s channel. It just reminds me so much of Aussie slang that I have too 😂😂 Thank you as always for my favourite videos. ❤❤
