IN this video I am looking at a customers 2014 Hemi Dodge Ram with the big 5.7. Customer complaint was his money light was on and the gas gauge quit working. No he already launched the parts cannon but it missed the target so now we need to see what is really wrong with it.
-Enjoy!

probably leftover routing from when the fuel lines and maybe tank was metal or alternate tanks and other lines. While I suppose that may give more slack to the fuel tank harness as well, but yes, it's very stupid routing. 🙄

Just a guess, but I suspect some configuration of the truck, maybe diesel, long bed, mega cab or ?, has a cross member or some other support that needs the harness shifted to the top of the frame. Cheaper/easier to build as much as they can as similar as possible.

I would have started at the sending unit and that shows my inexperience. Your method was spot on. My father-in-law has a 2014 Ram Hemi too. He got to drive the truck for all of 9mos after buying it used a few years ago. Then it sat for a while because of a persistent misfire. They trailered it to the dealer and a jiggle test indicated the passenger's side harness had issues. FF to last fall, I was able to peel back the harness and located several faults. In their infinite wisdom the manufacturer routed the harness too tightly against the back of the VC and the wires chafed against eachother and wore through 3 of them and started on a 4th. Coils #6 & #8 had been severed, with #6 injector wire broken too. #4 injector was on it's way, not far behind. All of this occured right at the corner of the valve cover. We made the repairs, wrapped it all back up and found some slack to wrap the harness a little better. The dealer wanted $1,700 for a new harness. While I'm on board with replacing with a new harness in instances like this, I'm not ok with forking out bc of their stupidity, nor was I about to reroute a new harness. I find two problems with American car manufacturers that Asians don't have. #1) The harnesses are not modular #2) QC isn't as stringent. Modular harnesses means easier replacement for the end user and can be more easily adapted for different optioned vehicles. I'll use Subaru as an example here. The engine harness is strictly for the engine, same goes for other major systems. A group of plugs can be quickly unplugged(along with hoses etc) and you can pull an engine in less than an hour to replace a clutch. Or if an engine suffers a catastrophic failure, an entire donor, harness and all may be swapped in. American cars don't do this. Instead, everything, trans, 4WD, engine etc are all grouped together and must be unplugged individually from that major system's various sensors to remove that major component. QC seems much more stringent in asian markets too. It's not just anecdotal that I ran into the problem with the Ram. The ratio of TSBs in the domestic market to asian is ridiculous. Automotive Electrical engineers here need to step-up their game.

Anyone who thinks that mechanical crimp is insufficient has insufficient experience or education. Solder joints are absolutely NOT the end-all do-all of electrical connections. As long as you use a quality crimp, it’s as good as the wire. The perma-seal butt connectors have enough glue in them to confidently know it’s sealed. Perfect repair as usual Mr. O!
@photondebuger45
@photondebuger45 8 месяцев назад
And as far as I'm taught too soldering on cars and if you don't seal it or if it corrodes too you get electrostasis or something where it also causes problems too. Solder joints are better for like electronics n stuff to me, circuit boards n stuff wires yes but for cars with weather I guess you can do that with caution. Soldering is fun tho lol.

Good vid and thought process. Since most folks don't have access to the scan tools you have it would make sense after getting a wire diagram to go from front to back. If it was one code for the sending unit or pump then you could probably start there. At least for testing and visuals. But this truck had quite a few codes that ended up being on the same harness. So it made good sense for a front to back check of that harness. That's just a good habit to get into going from the start to the end. It might be boring and repetitive but better that than mixing up your routine and missing something important.

One suggestion here is maybe off camera, but when that connector is apart.. good idea to blow out both sides with air, maybe even electrical cleaner, then back with some dielectric and snap her together. Especially if u have seen that connector specifically corrode. Keeps the contacts clean and dirt water dust and corrosion out. I've built a habit... every single connector no matter what... if it's apart... gets shop air and di electric no matter what. Esp up there in the prny.. I do it here in Texas.. newer connectors have smaller wires, more wires.. terminal fretting is becoming a big deal. Either way, nice diag esp the service data on 12v vs 5v... as always nice job dude.
