I avoid flying any 787 Dreamliner at all costs purely because of the potential for the windows to be centrally locked. The very point of these windows were that they were around 30% larger so as to offer a better flying experience. Windows & shades should never be compulsorily locked or pulled down by crew - if you wish to sleep in daylight, wear eye shades. The Dreamliner promised a renaissance but in fact destroyed the joy of flying simply because of the central locking window feature. For each & every flight I take, I’d rather switch off the IFE & marvel at the world outside & below. I was looking forward to travelling Air Maroc next month for the first time in thirty years but will be rebooking with BA as a result of this video so thank you.

Same here. I was going to fly to Perth on Qantas from LHR - but saw reviews of the crew locking the windows and instead flew Singapore Airlines via Singapore. I will actively avoid the 787 purely on this basis. I don't care how good the airline is or the price, I don't want someone else controlling what I can and can't look at out of the window!

Yes. I NEVER book this aircraft unless no alternative. VS are also known for locking down windows. I choose the window to see the world and know that my holiday has begun. Even worse, when it is dawn outside - they remain blank. BUT when they want to wake you up, there is an electronic 'sunrise' invented by the kiddiwinks asked to make something 'new and funky'. This year we have to be on a VS 789 and the trip will be horrible - despite the fact that we shall be in Upper Class.

I work on the Boeing 787 as the senior cabin crew member, I never allow crew to lock out the windows day or night, I also frequently monitor the control panel for them, and unlock them if I discover they have been locked by other crew members. It’s part of the service standards that the customer at the window chooses on all types, except for taxi , take off or landing when they should always be set to clear.

I have printed out AA’s written statement/policy about not locking out the windows on their 787s and will happily go “full Karen” on any flight where they attempt to do so. I’ve only had to do more than ask for them to be unlocked four times during my AA travels but physically handing them this “reminder” has made all the difference during those four flights.

HATE when crew lock the windows dark. At any time, but especially on a day flight. For those that want to nap - use the provided eyeshades (that's what they're for), or bring your own better ones. I can see the case for windows darkened on some cases - I've been on midsummer overnight flights on northerly routes where it doesn't get dark even at midnight - but otherwise, windows open in the daytime. After 25 years, I still carry a grudge about a flight on which the crew made everyone close the shades as we flew along the coast of Greenland on a cloudless day. This was before seatback screens, and the daylight was washing out the image on the pop-down screen. Apparently some people thought that watching the movie "What Do Women Want" starring Mel Gibson was more entertaining than a thousand miles of fjords and glaciers.
@nickaston2468
@nickaston2468 2 месяца назад
It should be up to the customer whether or not they want the windows 'open' or 'dark', I mean, you pay the money for that window seat, so you should have the choice whether or not you want to look out of it. If someone in the cabin doesn't want daylight, then they should use the eyeshades.

I'm getting to the stage where if I had a choice between a 787 and any other type, I'd go for the other type. That is purely down to the fact that I like a window seat because it has a window next to it and I like to look out of it. If the cabin crew block the light, all you have is a wall.

I'd also be aggravated at the crew blacking out the windows on the entire plane, especially in upper class where a bright window might only bother 1 or 0 people! I think I've seen some peoples' videos where a 787 only locked it at 50% dark instead of as far as it goes.

I don’t mind the crew dimming the windows, but perhaps limit that by half or two-thirds. The narrowed bandwidth still helps with lower lighting and would let passengers take it from there. It is still pretty dark and gives some form of control back to people who prefer a better view.

Happiness is seeing notification that your favourite RU-vid channel, Paul Lucas, has posted a new video. He keeps us waiting but he's always worth the wait. Regarding the blinds, whilst there might be legitimate reasons for darkening the blinds, unless it's mandatory, surely it wouldn't be unreasonable for passengers to have the right to request that their blind be restored to its normal daylight mode.

Thanks for another great video, Paul. Curious whether the window blackouts are the norm for RAM, or whether this was a little 'creativity' by the cabin crew. Admittedly, I'm slightly irked by the "always one" pax on a mid-haul who insists on flooding their whole cabin section with daylight, but I'd take this rather than surrendering my freedom to peep out! (If the cabin's dark, I'll crack my blind by an inch or two, just so I can enjoy what's visible outside.) I wonder if any passengers who suffer from severe claustrophobia might start freaking out unless transparency was restored, perchance demanding the aircraft be diverted on medical grounds if the crew refused....... As for face mist, where would we be without it?! Reminds me of the "pillow spray" that Caledonian Sleeper used to provide in their amenity kit... though I still have my unopened little bottle, in case I'm ever feeling wild!
