I expect this mower will last several seasons with decent care. ru-vid.comUgkx1VWTrayKBdCKAjzAcZ_Eg4dhHTae3LkN also recommend Also, I ran across the problem with it not starting the 2nd time I used it. There is a safety switch which is pushed in by the chute or mulching piece being attached to the deck. I took the cover off and it wouldn't start. Put it back on, no problem. It takes only a minute with 2 easily accessible wingnuts and no tools. This mower starts up first crank each time and it is a joy to use. It also mows in reverse by putting the key to the reverse area after starting and pushing in the triangular button. It will stay in reverse mode until you turn it off. All in all, for my homeowner needs, I really like this mower-and at 70 bucks a cut here in Miami, it's already more than 1/3 paid for itself in a month.
Those Z9’s w/the 7-iron pro decks speak for themselves. That was some seriously impressive performance in conditions most folks would need to use a brush hog in.
Your machine is a beast! I use to have a Z710a but sold it with my house. Now have I have Z320R for my new property. I wish I had the grass for a 970R. That power and a 72" deck is killer! 😍😎
@@dryrunoutdoors It's a cool little tractor. I got it just a few weeks ago. The hour meter shows .7 of an hour right now. I barely even need one, my neighbors probably think I'm ridiculous. I just love the John Deere zero turns though 😆 I love how your 970 looks 😮
What size mower were you using before? Hoping for any kind of comparison with the 72" from anything smaller you've had in the past. Great video love the machine, my local dealer has a mower like this that was a demo with 82 hrs, they're offering a new warranty and new financing rates on it.
When we first moved here I purchased a 60 inch auto connect deck for my John Deere 2025R. While that is a great mower it was the absolute worst choice for my property. I borrowed my dad's zero turn (48 inch John Deere) and then purchased this 970R used with 45 hours.
Absolutely, gorgeous black lab! I'm about to purchase a 2017 Z970R used with 2098 hrs. It's only for my personal use for about 3/4 an acre. I realize the hours are a little high but I'm wondering if there's anything else I should be looking at for? A lot of the under as far as belts and such were recently replaced.
He’s a great dog! Honestly I do not know what to look for in a zero turn with that many hours. Mine has about 140 hours now and I am no expert on used zero turns. Are you sold on the 970R? Maybe for 3/4 of an acre you could get 950R with lower hours for the same price ? Less Nickle and dining
Great mower, my son has one 9 series, Question, why do you mow and throw the cut grass back onto the area that has not been cut, appears to me that would make it harder on the mower to get a clean cut, Good job,
All the3e mowers work great on areas that is flat and has no tree stumps and rocks strewn about. My problem is the are I care take has a lot of small saplings and rickes strewn about. Sting trimmers do a ok job but always have to stop and change out the stings. But it works way better than a blade trimmer. Especially with the rocks.
Our old property was like that. We cleared forest trees and bamboo, leveled it out with an excavator, put up topsoil, and planted grass. A lot of work but it was worth it
There’s no logos or anything on it. We bought the zero turn with 45 hrs and it already had the chute blocker installed. With that being said. I believe it’s the QWIKCHUTE. Looking at the photos of that model it appears to be the same
I'm a little late to the party. I'm picking up a Z950M this week. How often do you sharpen the blades and more important. How do you sharpen them. How do you get under the mower and do you use a grinder? Thanks.
I have two sets of blades. I’ll take a set off and put a fresh pair on, then I’ll sharpen the old set. As long as it looks good, I’ll swap them out and sharpen 1-2 times a season. We use a handheld grinder to sharpen. Some people would probably recommend sharpening them more often but we aren’t a landscaping business lol
@@dryrunoutdoors Ok, thanks for the quick response. This is also just for my property only, but i have 10 acres to do. I'm glad you showed how it handles bigger grass and brush. I've got some of that also. Looks like this mower can handle a lot! You have a beautiful property.
We bought the 970R with 45 hrs on it. Previous owner was a landscaper and he took them off and threw them away. He ran all his mowers without the covers. He claimed this makes it run better. I don’t cut enough to test out his theory.. it doesn’t bother me either way, haven’t seen a need to buy new ones
Prevents grass from accumulating and any moisture buildup in grass under cover will eat away at deck. This is my personal experience and may not be his case.
By the way that mower is shooting the grass out, I bet it has high-lift blades. I have a John Deere Z925A with a 27 HP Kawasaki and it cuts very well with high lift blades and does aright with gator blades. The gator blades work only slightly better but not as good as I would have hoped in thicker grass. The high lift blades definetly shoot the grass much further and does well for blowing leaves into a pile. But the gator blades will shred them pretty well with the chute cover closed. The high lift blades do cut a bit better. I wanted to try other types of mulching blades to see if they work better on the 7-Iron Pro decks.
@@Omegadoomship I’m uploading a video tomorrow and it has the blades in it. I’m not sure what they are. Take a look if you wish and let me know. I think they are just stock Z970R

We have the exact mower but different deck size I love it but now our need "employee" ran over something that actually made a huge hole in the back of the deck and I mean HUGE so now we have 2 discharges on our mower😅😅
Ahh don’t ya love it! Surprisingly in my area we don’t see many commercial companies using John Deere. Im not sure why that is! See mostly SCAG, Exmark, Toro. How many hours do you have on yours ?
@@dryrunoutdoors we only cut on Sat-Sun but we daily 8-12 (7AM-until we are done with every yard) due of the yards being 1-2 Acre each (max we did was 10 yards) I didn't join the Family Company till this year (like maybe a month or two ago) but supposedly they owned it for awhile
@@dryrunoutdoors yeah I try to too but sometimes it doesn’t happen the way I want it to and I get stuck. Oddly I town it out with the 994 with “normal” tires.
7 iron is the best stamped deck no other manufacturer can do it on a 7 gauge steel that's why it has no clogging and get the grass out fast it is the best design I have done the research and put many decks to the test
JD uses stamped decks but are much heavier gauge than the other brands. The fabricated decks have sharp 90 degree angles which accumulate more grass buildup and degrade cutting performance. These heavier stamped decks are every bit as good as a fabed deck from other makers.
We paid 12ish for it in January 22. It was used. 2021 model with 40 ish hours on it. I’d definitely buy used right now, the market is prime for low hour zero turns

If you appreciate your mower & equipments even just a little bit, then its essential to blow off the offcuts and dirt from the deck and around the spindles and belt, and keep it clean at all times. I shouldn't even mention it if you are on a pro level... Otherwise you don't deserve that machine. Good stuff anyway, keep it looked after. Some TLC.....
@@Summersblues1 I have 7 acres of hills and bumps, and I like to go fast… so the box store ones would not last on my property. Those are good for some people but not for us. They aren’t built as tough, don’t have as much power, and are not as fast as the 970r
@@dryrunoutdoors , yeah, I’m going to be on 5 acres , and I like the way yours looks and works, yours has a nice wide base for cutting, and it looks like it chewed right through the tall grass! So I want to get one like yours, but I don’t have another $15-$20,000 dollars, are there ones that are good quality that are around 10, or do I have to just look for a used one? Also, if I am on a property like yours, what are some specifications I should be looking for ? I want to go fast and I want it to cut through the high weeds with no problem! Sorry so many questions!
