14 Pews is a nonprofit that is passionate about enriching lives through the positive, transformational power of the arts, education, and community outreach.
THEATRICAL, EDUCATIONAL & COMMUNITY OUTREACH CALENDAR 2015-2016 (7/1/15 - 6/30/15)
14 Pews will continue to host film series and festivals, however for our
2015-2016 season we will focus more on theatrical, educational and community outreach programs, which are listed below:
THE FEVER: Our artist-in-residence this season is the multi-talented Houston actor/director, Greg Dean. He will be starring in the one-man-play, written by Wallace Shawn. Winner of the 1991 Obie Award for Best Play. "THE FEVER is a work that asks, in a highly original way: Is it possible, or even right, for a sensitive person to be happy in today's world?" -NY Times.
Performance Dates: 7/09/15 - 7/25/15
DIALOGUES ON GRACE: Inspired by the anti-Muslim sentiment in our country, Dialogues on Grace is a 75-minute Documentary Theater Play, with 5 actors/actresses, based on the transcripts of over 50 interviews with people of all faiths, politicians, artists and academics asking them questions on grace; what it means, what it looks like, could one have grace without subscribing to a religion, and an example of grace in their lives. The goal of the project is to celebrate our similarities, while recognizing and accepting our differences. COMMUNITY OUTREACH PROGRAM: Performance Dates: 9/10/15 - 10/4/15
THOM PAIN (BASED ON NOTHING): Our artist-in-residence Greg Dean will be starring in this one-man-play, written by Will Eno. THOM PAIN is at bottom a surreal meditation on the empty promises life makes, the way experience never lives up to the weird and awesome fact of being. But it is also, in its odd, bewitching beauty, an affirmation of life's worth…a small masterpiece." -NY Times. Performance Dates: 2/4/2016 - 2/21/2016
GIVE MY POOR HEART EASE: Based on the book by Dr. Bill Ferris, a professor of History and Folklore at UNC Chapel Hill with a focus on Southern African American folklore and culture, who spent time touring his homestate of Mississippi throughout the 60s and 70s with his camera and tape recorder -- Give My Poor Heart Ease, is a Documentary Theater Play with Song, written by Ashley Melzer, Musical Advisor is T Bone Burnett, based on Dr. Bill Ferris’ interviews with some of the most influential Southern musicians of this century. Performance Dates: 4/21/16 - 5/8/16
SUMMER DOCUMENTARY WORKSHOP FOR TEENS: Since 2012, 14 Pews Film Academy has offered a FREE 3-week summer documentary workshop to students at Reagan High School. Both 14 Pews and Reagan High are located within a mile from each other in the Heights neighborhood of Houston, Texas. The goal of our Film Academy was to keep the youth of Houston engaged in positive and creative activities that will be beneficial to both the students and to our community.
