I love the effects in this movie, can’t imagine how many sets they went trough for this movie that room gets frozen, flooded and burned and it all looked amazing. Kafkaesque Nightmare is right this FEELS like such a nightmare, like one of those nightmares that just changes over and over. This movie is so under appreciated tho :/
I couldn't believe it when I seen it, but the water effects were all done practically, they had the whole room set on a tilting rig of chest deep water, the crew were on set friggin swimming around.
I don't know, I kind of like the theatrical ending. It gives you a happy ending with Mike moving on and getting back together with his wife, but you also get that chilling moment where the recorder plays their daughter's voice.
For sure for sure. The theatrical ending was the PERFECT ending I would have to say. This ties in well with the "1408 was all just a dream" when he awoke on the beach. I mean, you can look at the ending in 2 ways. First is, is that you come to the peaceful conclusion that he might've been just insane, and that he was lucky to survive the fire. However, when you hear the daughter's voice, then you know that the room was actually legit evil. Second is, after the recording and you hear the daughter's voice, which is brought on by the power of the room, you'd expect that the walls will be torn down again, only to reveal that he is still in the room since he hasn't died yet. Director's cut is still cool, especially when the recording is played. This is because now Samuel knows + has conclusive proof that the room has powers, and what kind of power it has. However, it's not that great when compared to the theatrical ending... since Samuel isn't that "surprised" that the room has powers, when compared to the wife.
Sam jackson tells me to go to sleep, i go to sleep. Definitely if you havent heard SLJ reading the book "go the fu*k to sleep: i recommend it. Never fails to cure my insomnia.
This movie scared me as a child. I’ve been trying to find the movie title for ever, but here you are, covering it like fate told you to do so. Thanks for the upload!
Me too my fave psycological horror movie ! it's a very good intense movie that doesn't need gore to impress.... instead it has psycological terror !!!!
I thought the theatrical ending was much, much better. Not because it was a happier ending but, that chilling moment where you and his wife hears what they hear from the recorder. You knew that whatever happened in that room, was very real to some extent. I agree that some of it was in his head, but a lot of it certainly wasn't. It's one evil f***ing room.
I think it proves that EVERYTHING in there was real, and that the room could and would in fact alter time and space to manipulate reality and trap previous victims in infinite loops of killing themselves
Yeah, I kinda felt while she was happy to have him back that on some level she didn't quite believe what happened until she heard the recording herself
@@dusk78Yes and there is another 4th ending where it’s the same but she doesn’t hear the daughters voice and he looks defeated which I didn’t like because it makes it seem like Mike is just legit crazy, so the theatrical ending is for all intent and purposes perfect…and yet they ruined it by changing it to the directors cut on streaming.
He reminds me a lot of Benedict Cumberbatch's Dr. Strange. Hunkered down in their long held disbelief of the supernatural, then their ego gets a swift kick in the ass.
I love this movie. Always had theories about it. I prefer the alternate ending where he moves and he is able to play a tape recorder with his daughter's voice on it.
@@sm_t8262 I actually looked up PG-13 horror movies for a high school Halloween event. That ending saved me from getting in trouble. Because none of the parents said "yeah I'm bringing my 7 year old kids with me"
Michael 3vil @0:13 John says “The room” if you subtract 0:13 seconds from 14:21 you get 14:08, which is “The Room”. Nice little way to sneak that in if you ask me. 👌🏾
the ending i saw was diffaerent. he was resuced from the fire and was at home with his wife. he finds the burnt recorder in a box of his stuff and plays. the daughters voice can be heard and scares the wife.
This is an odd movie in film history. It's pretty notorious but for different reasons for different people, which is pretty cool. I saw Real Dimension Pictures' video on this and seeing your video on this too makes me realize you would make good collaborations with others.
1408 is still one of my favorite movies ever, although I’ll say I personally enjoy the theatrical ending better. On one hand, I like seeing Mike live in the end and reunited with Lily. On the other, I genuinely find the ending where Lily tries to convince Mike it was all in his mind, only for her to also hear the recording where Mike talked to his daughter so much more powerful and frightening, just showing that it was real all along.
Great vid. I think another way to see this is that when Mike almost drowned, he had a near death experience in which he got a taste of his own personalized hell that was waiting for him if he didn't get his life in order. That's the vibe I got. If I remeber correctly he said something about Dantes inferno in the movie as well. The last circle being the coldest that's why the room froze over. I personally loved the ending where his he and his wife listens to the tape recorder and hears their daughter and they realize it wasn't just something his brain made up, it actually happened objectively.
The room really had a personality in this movie and was a character itself. It constantly taunts mike and is amused at how much he thinks it’s all fake.
It's pretty fucked up whe people don't listen to the lyrics and think its just a jingle. Sadly I had to tell my mom years ago when she would blast this song in the car and sing along...until I told her why those kids gotta run away since they're being shot at. Her face was priceless
One of the best horror movies of all time. Amazing atmosphere without a single death on screen, and no cheap attempts to scare via excessive blood and gore
I've seen various Japanese horror movies, in fact, the Grudge and The Ring are remakes of Japanese horror movies. Ghosts are rather big in Japanese horror.
I bought Everything's Eventual in 2002 or 2003 and loved this story. I remember being so excited when this came out. I went to the theater on a Thursday around 11 AM by myself. The theater was almost completely empty. I was beyond pleased with the cast, the movie, and that i hadn’t gone to a midnight showing.
I’ve always really liked this movie, I love horrors in general but few makes me keep coming back to it. There’s a lot of depth to this film, love when a movie decided to give more than just jump scars but also tells a great multilayered theme and story. This movie holds a special place in my mental library ❤️
After watching this movie, I can't help but draw a parallel between this and the shining, the room of 1408 and the floor its on, and the overlook hotel both not haunted by an evil spirit but the places themselves are evil entities
It's probably the best Steven King adaptation ever (though I haven't seen them all yet because I don't have cable so I can't really judge.) Delores Claiborne was pretty good, as well as The Mist and Storm of the Century but unfortunately most adaptations of his work are disappointing. I think adaptations of his writing are best when they focus on the characters so you experience the horror through them. It's no good if you don't care about the protagonist.
Another one of those profound films that rises above and beyond its place in cinematic space and time to become more appreciated and more profound the more time goes by.
This is in my top 5 favorite movies of all time. From the unbearable suspense to the unrelenting isolation and abuse. This movie, no matter how many times I watch it, pushes all of my buttons in all the right ways. Always giving me a sense of terror, making my heart race, and keeping me on the edge of my seat throughout the entire movie. No matter if I know what's going to happen I still get exited and terrified when I does happen. This is a stunning movie with few to no flaws.
Your videos are always so amazingly done. Whenever you put out an episode I will watch it, even if I don’t particularly care about the film you’re discussing. I’ve even made a list of movies and such I intend to watch thanks to your explanations. Keep up the awesome work! :)
I watched this film some 10 years ago. I was a kid at that time, watched the film at night, in a hotel in a middle of nowhere. I couldn't sleep through the night after finishing the film as i constantly looked out at the door. Though my dad slept next to me, the feeling of unease scared the crap out of me. I basically forget the film (and its name) even existed until today when i happen to see this video. For some reason, the elevator scene in the first few minutes triggered my memory and i remember exactly what this film is about
Man you have come along way. I remebr watching you when you made the 28 days later comic vids. Keep it up man and im sure you'll hit 1 million in no time
Yeah, I think thats not room service on the phone, and when they say we'll put you through to "Management" the demon means the big guy himself Lucifer. ( or if your a die hard King fan, the Crimson King )
Supposedly the “demon” that resided in 1408 took each guest into the 9 circles of hell, which explains why all of them ended up losing their minds. Each circle brought deeper and more messed up mental/emotional pain.
That "lady" swinging the hammer is actually a kickboxing champ from the '70s named Benny "The Jet" Urquidez. The name had (possibly still has) one of the best spinning kicks in the game. It was tight, unreadable, and powerful. If his character had swung with the intent to kill, Johnny C's character would almost certainly have died.
Honestly, the best ending they had was the one where they get back together. She finds his recorder in the stuff from the fire. She plays it, audio is distorted at first then she hears him with their daughter. I love 1408. It's a very underrated film.
Excellent video as per usual!👍 I wanted to get your thoughts on the premise that 1408, is akin to a modern day Dante's Inferno? With the protagonist going through real, or imagined 9 circles of hell... 1408 was truly disturbing! Which is saying a lot for me. As horror films rarely bother me in the least. A well done psychological thriller!👏👏👏 Also, which ending did you prefer? I lean towards the theatrical ending as it leaves much open to interpretation. Keep up the great work!👌👊
Explore the movie “Bubba Ho-tep” - Cult film about how Elvis never actually died and is in-fact living his life out at a nursing home. But has to kick ass when a ancient mummy starts terrorizing the home, Elvis partners up with an old black guy who thinks he is JFK, to take down the forces of evil. Great watch.
I've always wondered if those apparitions he sees in the room may have been spirits of past victims that we don't know about. I'm curious because at the end of the Directors Cut, after the car jump scare, you see him standing in the burnt room after his death before walking away and disappearing. All the endings were good though, and I remember this movie getting quite a bit of criticism because of how it felt like a fun house to some viewers.
The Historic Plains Hotel in Wyoming, I never stayed there before and I Knew it was an Old Hotel (VERY NICE INSIDE) I Jokenly said I wanted the Haunted Room. (I didnt even know the history of the Hotel) I was sent to a Room on the Second Floor towards the Back of the hotel. Forgot the room number, But as soon as I went inside it was not comfortable, I cant expalin it, but the best way would be this Movie. The feeling inside is just Off, Still cant explain it. I didnt see any Ghost or anything but this Movie 1408 is the best way to describe the way I felt while inside the room. This Hotel and Room still stands out. I traveeld frequently at the time and in lots of Hotels and never experianced anything close to this.. The TV Remote or the TV did not work or turn on, So I went to the Desk and was moved into another room. I didn't feel the same in the new room I was assigned and still today I cant explain the creepy feeling I had except this movie comes really close. it was CRAZY.
That's not at all how I remembered the end of the movie. . . I have memories that in the end he got back with his wife and going through some of the things he had left from the fire. Finding the recorder, playing it as his wife passed and both of them hearing their daughters voice. Leaving both of them stunned.
This (with the theatrical version) is one of, if not, my favorite Stephen King movies. Such a stressful story of a grieving father, desperate for a change in his life.
Hey! “ Favorite “ as in Story abstract/ concept? Kings: The Shinning, The Green Mile, The Dead Zone, The Dark Side!?! - Written & with Better Tension & Cinematography! Actually “ The Cell “ wasn’t that bad either- Great Plot Twist Ending- though reminiscent of “ Dallas “ ‘s season ending. God Bless.
Hey can you do a video about Geralt of Rivia's past. From the Witcher books & games, do a video about what witcher's are. Also you will love the character Gaunter O'dimm. Look him up & do a video about him.
this movie is psychological torture. In the best kind of way! Especially when you think he's out and living his life, just to find he's actually still trapped in the room. Or when the timer hits zero, just to find out it'll go on forever. Everyone I show this movie to loves it. Incredibly underrated
Watched this movie as a kid and it dominated my mind and psyche for a long time but I never remembered the name of the movie and that shit drove me crazy lol thank you for solving this decades long issue
Really great movie, I try to rewatch it at least once every year. I really like the theory that it is all in his head, like the room IS evil, but it can't physically hurt people, only mentally, so it relies on driving people insane and putting them into a perpetual nightmare until they eventually kill themselves. And my favorite ending is where he goes down with the room lighting in on fire, as it keeps it in line with the whole thing that nobody escapes the room alive, but in dying he was able to save people from it in the future.
I read the short (hah!) story after having watched the movie and, I gotta say, the short story was far scarier than the movie, which was pretty darn scary in its own right. This is probably one of Steven Kings best and most spine chilling works. As for my request, I'd like it if you explored the Redwall series a little; it started out as a book, titled Redwall, which, along with the its sequel and prequel, Mattimeo and Martin (respectively), got its own television series and comics. The book series spans around twenty novels with many additional books that add to the lore; I feel this series is really under represented and could use some attention.
Excellent video. This movie scared the pants off of me. I watched it alone at night. Then I saw it in the day. Still scary in an unsettling way that you can't put your finger on it. 💀☠️💀
The thing is, there are actually hotels that have completely covered a room up by taking out the door and door frame and making it a solid wall once more painting and all leaving all of the contents of the room in the room. One in particular comes to mind where the entity was so distraught and loud that it scared people out of the room even during the daytime.
I got lucky to see this the first time, I had just heard about it and read a couple spoiler free reviews and wished I could watch it...low and behold a few days later I am browsing channels for something to watch, and as I turn to AMC the credits for some movie were on when , lo and behold it says NEXT: 1408... I was quite pleased.
So much debate on whether he ONLY went insane and imagined things. If you put yourself in his shoes and experience what he does, this is SO terrifying! His/our perspective is that this is a real supernatural nightmare. It does not need overanalysis IMO.
It's one of the best horror/suspense movies. It's claustrophobic, intense, scary moments, great acting, Cusack did his thing. I'm sure it's hard to do a movie like this where it's basically just you. You have to keep the audience engaged the whole time. The movie depends on the actor. Like Buried with Ryan Reynolds. Not every actor can do this and make the movie actually great while keeping is entertained and our attention and not a bore fest. It's definitely top 3 favorite Cusack movies. Top 5 favorite movies in this genre or any genre. This movie, Identity, HTTM my 3 favorite roles from Cusack.
