146: Tate and Kara | Mixed Orientation Marriage: Together

Over the last six decades, Latter-day Saint leaders encouraged mixed orientation marriages as the only best option available to gay Mormons. Many gay Latter-day Saints used these types of marriages to diffuse their feelings of same-gender attraction, hoping (and believing) that God would provide a way for them to create a traditional family.
In this episode, Tate and Kara share their experience in a mixed orientation marriage. They discuss the four essential characteristics that help to make a marriage like theirs successful: open communication, a high level of personal commitment, adaptability, and a nuanced religious position.
This is a candid discussion about a marriage that is non-traditional, but also exists because of informed consent, compatibility, and desire. Are there mixed orientation marriages that work? Yes, of course! Let your truth be true.
Many people have walked this path, the Avey’s invite you to hear their story.

I truly respect their candor. I hope they continue to thrive, as a couple and family. They have their eyes wide open. No deception. No trying to pray the LGBTQ away. It appears that Tate has enough room on the Kinsey Scale to be married to a woman and for it to work. It is not for us to judge. This was a very respectful interview, undoubtedly tough for Kyle, due to his own experiences. Respect.

I agree too I have seen LGBT people in mix orientation marriages some work some don't but I have my own negative opinion on it but I respect LGBT who are in mixed orientation marriages but I think mixed orientation weddings should not be the only option I hope LGBT people who choose to be celibate or choose mixed orientation relationships know you have choices but I can't tell you what to do I just hope your happy in whatever you choose

They clearly care for each other, but this sounds so hard, and I'm grateful Kyle let them tell their story. I'm also grateful how emphatically say they aren't trying to show others what to do. As Tate said 'God trusts us to find our way' (so others can as well)

Kyle, as I listen and learn there is a recognition that your skills as an interviewer are excellent. A sweet couple. I respect their decision and their journey because its none of my business how others are getting through it. By the way, people don’t choose their sexuality, if that were so, how many of us would choose same sex? Wished I had a chose, that would be mind blowing!

I am sad hearing this story. I see they love each other, but how can either one of these 2 sweet people fully have their needs met emotionally or physically while staying in a mixed orientation relationship. It seems they are currently OK with it so I pray they can navigate through kindly.

As someone who was in the same boat, staying together is dangerous and selfish. I eventually got separated because it is not fair to her in any way!!! It will never work in the end!! End her misery now!!! Do the honorable thing and end it, The church hates gays and the church is a fraud, started by a criminal, sexual pervert!!!!

@@rbmcobra I don't believe we have the right to dictate to them. They have made a relationship which works for them and their children. Marrying one's best friend is a very positive thing. So many friends have lost their straight marriages because they were not best friends with one another. Whatever works for them is okay.

I understand mixed Orientation Marriage, I’m gay I have cerebral palsy I use a walker and wheelchair I’m 31, I had a boyfriend all high school from 04 to 09 after high school his parents found out we were gay and stopped us from talking

This is hard to watch. I married my high school sweetheart and he turned out to be gay. e was not at all into feminine things and went out of the way to do manly things. It was such a painful marriage. I loved him and desired him and that desire was not returned. I've never felt so lonely as I did on my honeymoon and in my marriage. Her crossed arms and other body language and look in her eyes makes me wonder if what I am seeing is just projecting my own experience on her or if she is also sad and lonely in the ways that I was.

Long term this may go the way of Josh and Lolly Weed. Plus she deserves a husband who is orientated to her and not someone who has to constantly suppress his desires and s a result be suicidal.
@elliott.nutter
@elliott.nutter 3 года назад
Just as Josh's story shouldn't have been used as, "Look, this works!" example, it shouldn't be used as, "See, it'll never work!" That family had their own story, and so does the Avey's. And Tate IS oriented to Kara. As he stated, he identifies as Queer. He's been in relationships with men. But ultimately BOTH of them chose each other. And their love is beautiful and real.
@maryefraim6627

And they continue to choose each other every day. No two people are ever meant to fulfill everything the other needs. We live in societies. Marriage can be a sacred, safe home we return to each day after going out in the world to build character, form bonds and grow as individuals.
@elizabethgrogan8553

@@maryefraim6627 Well said. I don't believe I have the right to dictate to others what their marriage should look like. There is no perfect recipe. Being one another's best friend is something many straight married couples don't achieve, usually leading to infidelity or divorce. This couple have a great and honest love for one another. They won't deliberately hurt their partner.

As an outside observer, I support any type of marriage that two adults choose. But, these two both seem sad. I see zero joy. And the wife’s body language and eyes suggest that this marriage causes her pain.

Monogamy/American marriage is overrated. Our life expectancy has more than doubled since the origination of “til death do us part”. Seriously, it was 39 years. Humans are most often serial monogamists, and overwhelmingly prefer (and do) to take multiple lovers across a lifetime. It’s normal. It doesn’t mean there’s no love, that companionship isn’t valued, it doesn’t mean secrets & lies are ok, doesn’t mean parenting isn’t doable-it doesn’t mean any of that. Divorce isn’t a “failure”. A 20 or so year loving relationship that produced happy healthy children ends as the people in it are completely different than they were at the start. This is not “bad”. It’s modern life. Doing this interview couldn’t have been easy. Thank you for being willing to do it. It was difficult for me to witness your pain, and I became upset. At the church, modern religions, and just most of society in general for the persistence of the monogamy marriage myth. Also angry because despite the many claims of not wanting to be considered role models & not be shoved in front of lgbtqia+ Mormons as a viable life path, you will be. They’ll cherry pick your story like they cherry pick the bibble.
