At the beginning of the season Van picked up a brand new 2015 YZF-R3 and it has turned out to be a better bike than any of us at STG had ever anticipated. The look, seating position, and quality of the Yamaha has made this motorcycle Van's street bike of choice for the summer of 2015. Watch as Van takes you through the steps he takes to service the 2015 Yamaha YZF-R3. He will show you how to do an oil change, adjust the chain tension, check for break wear, and reset the oil life index, as well as other tips and tricks along the way.
If you feel uncomfortable with this modification please take your bike to a licensed motorcycle mechanic. Stay tuned for more installation videos!

I like Brian how he is dead serious and always covers every point. I’m very ocd and he tends to hit every point I run into while servicing a bike. This video was his use of the ruler, chain alignment tool for getting your alignment of your rear wheel correct and pre filling the oil filter. All good stuff.

+David Murray I never was really into street bikes for the longest time, I liked the aesthetics of Cruisers more (no experience actually riding sadly, at least not yet) This however, for about 5k? I seriously can't really find any other bike that is as newbie friendly and within a similar displacement than this. Made me really re-evaluate my tastes in bikes, especially since I plan on making this a commuter vehicle when the whether is favorable.

To clean my chain I put the bike up on a wheel stand as you do. I put a rag in my left hand under the middle of the chain as you do. And I know people are going to freak out on my technique, but I turn the bike on and put it in first and let the wheel spin as I spray WD-40 down through the chain into my rag hand below. I then close my rag hand around the chain to catch excess. I even pinch the center slightly to get the middle of the chain. After about 30 seconds I switch to my chain wax and do the same thing. The rags are not tattered, in fact they look like the one you used, so no loose ends to catch the chain. Been doing it this way for 35 years with never an incident. ----- I have to say, I like that chain alignment tool you used. I had a laser about drove me cross-eyed.

This video is the singular reason I chose to do my first service myself, instead of shelling out $300+ dollars for my dealership to do it. I bought everything from STG for $100.47 (filter, oil, chain cleaner, chain paste, and chain alignment tool). Thanks for making these videos, I hope you guys do more for later services. I'm sure the $4,000 mile service is going to hit me where it hurts. I'd love to see videos on replacing levers, and maybe R6 throttle tube mod! ;)

One thing i Disagree on, using a tool to tighten oil filter, you can easily over tighten it and make the seals useless. You can easily hand tighten a oil filter just enough wear the seal will bond and it will be difficult to get it off the next time.

Awesome video man. In aviation maintenance, the only time we use new drain plug washers is if it is a crush washer or the washer is damaged/warped. Absolutely nothing wrong with reusing a drain plug washer that is still in good shape. From what I've learned so far and have been told prior.. any oil filter that has a nut on the top is not meant for installation with a wrench. The nut is meant for the removal process but it all really depends on how much torque you're putting down if you chose to use a wrench to tighten it. Hand tight is all it needs for most car/bike oil filters. Some people may not know this and can end up stripping the threads on the filter or in worst case, the threads on the block side.
@sportbiketrackgear
@sportbiketrackgear 8 лет назад
+Jayee In most cases I would say you are giving good advice! I feel comfortable with my torque sensitivity with a wrench so I worry about it less than most. I have for sure seen my fair share of over tightened oil filters! Great advice, thanks for watching!

Great video. However the safety wire on the filter was backwards. You want it pulling it tight, not loose.
@sportbiketrackgear
@sportbiketrackgear 6 лет назад
Thanks for watching. The nut on the top of the filter makes it difficult to pull in the right direction. That said adding safety wire to the oil filter that was left loose will most likely not be able to prevent it from leaking. I look at this as another opportunity to double check that the filter is tight more in the first place. Once you have the wire twisted up and secured to anchor point on the bike it will help prevent the fastener (filter in this case) from rotating even if you are not able to position it so that you get a good pull in the direction that would tighten the fastener. - Brian Van
@ilusq
@ilusq 2 года назад
Quick question, shouldn't the bike be on the side stand while doing the chain slack adjustment? Also for the oil level the bike should be on level ground instead on the paddock stand to prevent overfilling imo. Thanks for this video!
@sportbiketrackgear
@sportbiketrackgear 2 года назад
There is a similar load on the swingarm when the bike is on the kickstand or the rear stand. For the oil level there will not be a major difference with the bike on the rear stand. If you are concerned you can double check with the rear tire on the ground. - Van

Sportbike Track Gear so it turns out it wasn’t installed properly I guess because I can feel exhaust pulses escaping all around the area where the slip on is fitted to the original piping, no idea how they got that wrong or if I need a sleeve of sorts to fix it or just a new exhaust but it explains why it sounded odd

I’m very sorry if I already asked you this but do you know if all spools are also “spool sliders”? I noticed some spools have a screw head that you screw and some you just twist the spool to thread it in, and only some market themselves as sliders spools
@sportbiketrackgear
@sportbiketrackgear 3 года назад
Spool sliders are larger than the aluminum spools and are larger in size made from a very durable plastic. Most of these install in the same manner standard spools will. There are other products like axle sliders on the market as well. - Van

Hi STG new biker here, got my 2018 r3 and rode 7500kms and noticed that my chain had stiff links on 2 parts and made a sound on running on uphill, any suggestions to fix it?

I would replace the chain and sprocket kit complete. Here is a link to them for your bike on our site: www.sportbiketrackgear.com/parts/yamaha/yzf-r3/2018/?_bc_fsnf=1&Department=Sprockets+and+Chain+Kits&brand%5B%5D=207&brand%5B%5D=51 - Van

Quick question, can the bikes chain tension be tightened while on the ground? I dont have a support stand, my R3 has a kickstand though
@sportbiketrackgear

Yes you can still make the adjustment on the ground with the same process. - Van

So I did a noob move … recently got a r3. Thought it was starving in oil so I added a quart…. Later realized bike has to be off stand to check level and now the sight glass is full … should I be worried ? Will it be ok what should I do.
@sportbiketrackgear
@sportbiketrackgear 2 года назад
You need to check the oil and adjust the level back to where it should be. I would not ride it with an extra quart of oil. - Van

After the chain adjustment, was the chain still touching the swingarm when it was pushed upwards for measurement?

Whoa late late question but do you absolutely need the bike lifted for a chain adjustment

No you can also do it on the side stand. This procedure is covered in the owners manual that came with the bike. - Van

Just bought a 2015 R3 with 370 miles from original owner, first service is coming up and you're video will save me some money from taking it to a dealer and have them service it, thank you for this video. Quick question, does brake fluid, and other fluids have to be flushed and fill with new fluid for its first service? Also after doing oil change with this synthetic oil, when will my next oil change be?

+Raphael Nixon (The Wild Wolf) Don't stress too much. Just make sure the chain isn't too tight and that it isn't slapping around when you ride and you'll be all good!

Hi, I am having an issue on my R3 when in 4th gear going above 75-80kmph. Feeling very unstable/uneven vibrations coming from engine. Do you know why this may be happening?

If the bike was on front and rear stands would it read proper? I’m just wondering cause I have a hard time holding the bike level and trying to read that thing and fill it with oil at the same time because of where it is located... and I don’t have one of those front wheel lock holder things..

I just purchased a Yamaha R3 with only 1,500 miles on it.I believe he did not do his oil change... I was wondering if I should still get an oil change? Heard its every 3,000 miles, but still a noob at all this :/ I do plan on cleaning my chain though.

If the bike is a more than a full season old I would suggest changing the oil and filter on it. I like to do it every 3,000 or at the start of a new season. Oil is cheap, motors are expensive. - Van
