I'm really missing Germany right now and started to think about all the sweet and adorable things I love about it! Maybe this is when you find out how weird I am for thinking some of these things are cute or maybe you find them to be cute too!!
Hi! I'm Kelly and I am an American who lived in Germany for 18 wonderful months. While I lived abroad before in Turkey and had done quite a bit of traveling beforehand, those 18 months in Germany definitely broadened my perspective of Germany, Europe, and even the US in so many different ways! I wanted to share my perceptions with you guys through RU-vid so that maybe you can gain context to things you've heard about, or learn new information or a different perspective, or maybe this is everything you've heard before and further confirms your world view. No matter what the reason, I hope that you enjoy my videos! Don't forget to subscribe to my channel and turn on notifications so that you always know when I'm posting new content :)

I'm German, so I never really thought about it... But I guess what I do find adorable is the concept of "spazieren gehen" - people in general but also many families going for walks outside, very often also in any weather. And it's done all the time (and not just at the moment)!

I bought a t-shirt of the ampelmädchen in Berlin during a trip, not knowing they were so famous. A couple of weeks later, I was sitting in a park somewhere in Belgium and saw this group on a guided tour. The guide was speaking German, and as the group walked by me, he stopped telling people about what was around them, pointed at me and went “... and this guy went to Berlin”, and then finished his explanation about something else. He did not miss a beat... as if this explanation was part of the planned tour.

The Berlin Ampelmännchen-Thing is highly political: From the day the eastern states joined the western federal republic after the iron curtain fell, eastern states had to use the western road code (StVO - Straßenverkehrsordnung). In this code it's also laid down, how road signs look - and this would have been a death sentence to the eastern Ampelmännchen. Many people from the east didn't like the shape of the western Ampelmännchen and wanted to keep their familliar ones. As this went viral, the road code was changed to allow differing shapes. As there where no safety issues, even western cities wanted their own Ampelmännchen now and Mainz with it's Mainzelmännchen became AFAIR the first western city with own Ampelmännchen. Last year, my hometown Emden joined those cities with local Ampelmännchen. The city is the birthplace of German comedian Otto Waalkes, who created cartoon elephants called "Ottifanten", which are nearly as iconic as the Mainzelmännchen in Germany. But as the city of Emden planned to install Ottifanten-Ampelmännchen, this was verboten: Ampelmännchen have to be anthromorphistic - so now Emden Ampelmännchen show Mr. Waalkes himself. Germans obey the rules - exspecially at traffic lights.

For this to have come through back then, you can bet your ass that there was a lot of political furor going on.

Hey Kelly! This was so much fun:) I literally had a smile on my face pretty much the whole time, in fact, I'm still smiling. I love Germany, was an exchange student and lived with a German family for a year at the end of which I really felt more like a German than an American! Tell you the truth, I honestly rarely think of German things as being "cute." But you're right! The Ampelmaennchen are so cute. I only thought they were in what was East Berlin. My "cute" recollection, now this was like 50 years ago, was of a being introduced to a brother and sister, they would have been eight and ten years old, and of course, with the introduction they shook my hand. But the boy shook my hand and did a sort of half-bow and as the girl shook my hand she curtsied. That was unusual even at that time, but I never forgot it and thought it was so cute. I also think it's sort of cute how Germans won't cross hands when they're greeting each other and are say, in a group of four. So they'll shake the hand of the person in front of them but will take turns shaking the other person's hand because to cross hands/arms is bad luck. Anyway, thanks for doing this--it really made my day. Stay safe!

I was in Germany years back talking to my other half (she was German) and I crossed the road, still talking but when I was on the other side I realised she wasn't by my side. I looked round and saw her across the street. She asked why did I crossed the street. I said, well there's no cars coming. She pointed up at the traffic sign - red man light on. Germans obey their laws strictly. When i was driving her car she would often say " go faster.." as it was the autobahn. So I did 120mph. Not had a woman telling me to drive faster. " Ok you can slow down now it's not high speed section". Germans multistorey carparks don't smell of toilets like in the UK. The carpark office has filing cabinets, computers just like an office. Having a "platform shelve" in the toilet bowl. She explained that one to me, that was interesting from a practical pointy of view.

TOTALLY NOT ! We dont obey all laws!! - LOL most of the time, only WOMEN do that. but there are only a few they stop by red light. if there is no Car, ofc i cross the street! - i can tell that from my view, "only when no children are near by". but there also people they give a damn fuck about, crossing the street by red light, even if children are near by. I dont understand that people they arent risin in Germany, they believe, germans obeying all LAWS which exists. - BIG LOL. you people dont understand our LAW SYSTEM.

@@yasobabo I don't get the racism part of your comment. Are you trying to hide your intellectual deficit in logical thinking by drawing the racism card? People from outside Germany (French, Italians, Americans, etc.) don't care about jaywalking, a known fact. The point of the main comment is exactly about that stereotype - Germans do care about and the rest of the universe does not. If you're too dull to get the topic straight - okay, no problem. But you are not the one to decide which kind of people Germany needs, little fascist.

@@yasobabo Why are you yelling? Germans -in general- are suckers for obeying rules. My mum always said "In France, everything is allowed until someone forbids it. In Germany, everything is forbidden until someone allows it." I think there's some truth to that. Many Germans get almost anxious when no clear rules are defined. Now, of course there are always exceptions. I'm not sure why you're trying to push the idea that we're all running around without following the rules. Edited for spelling

We turned up the music, got out of the car, set up the chairs, opened a beer and ate some Ravioli just chilling because there was nothing else to do anyway. And another time someone from the car next to me shared some of his food when he noticed me staring at him snacking at the wheel.
