Well, no. 2 isn't a common thing in Germany. Leaving a dinner table with a whole group during the main course... This might be happen in Berlin but definitely not all over Germany. Never ever experienced this kind of behaviour.

Especially not in the middle of dinner. Noone interrupts dinner for a smoke and then returns to continue eating. This has to be a misconception. Going for a smoke after eating is a pretty common thing though. And if you're in a group of smokers, they might all leave at once, which seem to me as the least surprising thing.

1. Rent for an apartment can be much higher than 10€ per m² and that is only the so called "cold rent" which means that electricity, water, heating, phone, cable TV and maintenance cost (trash removal, cleaning, gardening) will be on top. It's quite normal, that people in Germany spend 35-50% of there netto income (after tax ) for the rent. Not that cheap and of course except the kitchen, you rent empty rooms without any furniture. 2. That an entire company leaves the table at a restaurant for a smoke break during dinner is very rare. I have never experienced that and I'm a 56 year old local. 3. Paying with your credit card at the gas pump only works for US citizens who have a US credit card and a home ZIP code. As a tourist, even with 2 valid platinum cards (Master + Visa) but without a resident zip code, I had to enter the shop, guess how much $$ my fill would be, get my card charged for that amount, than I could start pumping gas. If I underestimated the needed amount for a complete fill, I have to do that again, if I estimated to much, I had to get back to the store, to get the overpaid $$ transferred back to my credit card. Nowhere could I pump first and pay later at the shop, because they obviously think that every customer is a possible gas thief who makes a run without paying. Nice if you live there, but a stone age system if you are a tourist. 4. To find prostitution in the US is not that hard, since they just cover it up as massage parlors or escort services (happy endings guaranteed). Even open street prostitution can easy be found in big city's like L.A. or San Francisco. I have never found more prudish and hypocrite people as in the US, sorry to say that. Sex as as normal part of live in the US, ha ha, but the whole nation goes berserk if a nipple is shown on TV for a split second? LOL A country, where a mixed sauna is automatically considered as a brothel or a swinger club? Where a commercial for a bra is not shown on TV, but is the biggest producer of porn movies world wide? Where you can be arrested if you change your wet swim trunks under a wrapped around towel on a public beach? Regarding sex, the US is rely screwed up form a European point of view.

100% agree especially about the “sex” view and nudity. I sold video games to a mother and asked her point blank why she would let her 10 year old son play a game where he would be witnessing someone’s head being blown off and forced to torture someone over a game that had a warning of mild nudity... She couldn’t answer me.

3vr1m im not saying that Darmstadt is more expensive than Munich but it is on the top ten list of most expensive cities if you talk about rent. You’re right, Munich is pretty damn expensive with 17,56 € per squaremeter. But still Frankfurt, Stuttgart, Mainz and yes, even Darmstadt are up there. However I personally believe that looking at rent in cities is problematic. Comparing smaller districts would be more insightful. For example Ditzingen near Stuttgart has a significantly higher rent cost than Stuttgart. I didn’t want to say that Munich isn’t expensive or that Darmstadt is more expensive but rather that Munich can be expected to be expensive, is a big city. But Darmstadt is one of the smaller cities in Germany but still has incredibly high rent costs. Sorry for the confusion

thisisgoddi I agree Darmstadt is one of the more expensive cities (according to the internet, the average rent is 11,77€/square meter), but I guess it also always depends on where you want to live in the city (which area). Hamburg as an example, the average rent is (according to the same page) 13,26€, but it can increase drastically when you’re renting a flat in the Altstadt, which can be up to 21,35€/square meter.

My thoghts about thse: 1. The talk about 10€ per square meter is problematic. The rule of thumb in Germany is that the rent should not exceed 30 percent of the income after tax, pension payments and health care. Nowadays, it often exceeds 40 percent, and in some cities like Munich, it is higher than most people earn. If I interpolate what you said, then the rent for that Washington appartment exceed 2150 USD, which is more than the average income in Germany. 2. I have never seen such a smoke break as you described. This is completely uncommon in restaurants, and in bars only some of the poeple leave the table. 3. Android is preferred because of better value, iPhones are too expensive. Nowadays, Samsung is going down the same route nad becoming increasingly less popular. A lot of people here like to spend about 300-400 EUR for a smart phone, not more. Also, a lot of people dislike the vendor lock-in and silly limitations like not being able to directly access files on the phone when it is connected to a PC. 4. You are right about German gas stations. They are taking over the role of convenience stores over here and make almost no profit from the gas itself. 5. Swearing is a part of everybody's life, so it's unnatural to remove it from the media. Also, sometimes people just don't care or they don't even understand. Have a look at this classic commercial form the Netherlands: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-7nQ9lmriWOc.html 6. That singing along depends. But sure, American music is played all the time. And british music. And english language music from Sweden. And, and, and... 7. Making prostitution legal is important to ensure social security for sex workers. Also, why waive the opportunity to collect takes for these businesses?
@holleholl3057

You´re completely right ! My only "shock" was to see, what Kelly shocked in Germany ... especially her feeling of the numbers of smoking in Germany. I never smoked, in my family nobody smokes and the only person I remember smoking is the cowboy from the Marlboro commercial... Apple and Android are both american products - so why the "culture shock"...???
@FHCity
@FHCity 5 лет назад
Additional to 1.: There are cheap prices, for example for food, because we have one of the biggest low income sectors in Europe, when it comes to employment (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Uxs0asqdSAk.html). Now this also explains why the rents are high and getting higher from the (average) German's point of view, because they spend like 30 to 70 % of their income for these rents!
@FreigeistMovies

I totally agree with everything listed above. Maybe as a little addition: to #2 just like a lot people who already commented on this, I never experienced this kind of smoking break. Usually everyone finishes their food before leaving for a cigarette, sometimes taking a drink with them, but never standing up in the middle of dinner, leaving the food on the table. To #4: There is a security aspect to this, too. Having people come into the station gives both sides control over the act of payment. Aside from that, yes, almost everyone going in will buy something. Even if it is only a snack, something to drink or some chewing gum. To #5: English swear-words aren't removed from media as it is a foreign language and radio stations as well as television try to honor the original content without meddling with it. You will hear German swear words being censored. Making thema radio edit, too. There is a common rule in media in Germany to only play the uncensored versions on TV or radio after 10pm, as the audience should be old enough to understand or deal with them. The situation should be just like in the US. If I remember correctly, they censor the english swear words, but none of the foreign languages. I even came across a pub in LA which seemed to make it a fun game to put as many German curse words on the menu as possible. To #6: the world of German music just seems a little limited, so everyone try to seek music to their liking in the variety of world music. USA being the biggest musical provider will have the most possibilities for everyone. Even German musicians try to sing in english to maybe be invited on a tour in North America.

I've seen those smoke breaks. However not so common while there is still leftovers from the meal. Usually after eating and while staying for drinks. Completely Empty tables have been a common sight for me when I was younger. Since less and less people are smoking, it becomes more common to see 1 or 2 people staying at the table. Also for the brothels. They aren't as accepted as it might seem. Whenever a new one opens in a small town, there is a lot of countermovement. People are afraid of the people running those places. And while yes, legalising them is needed to ensure social security for the sex workers, it also makes it even harder to take down people who are forcing others into this kind of work, I think. Very complex if you ask me and I am not really decided for myself if I think brothels being legal in Germany is a good thing or not.

4. I am shocked she did not notice that she is lured into a shop. Never bought a chewing gum there? 5. Germans are a bit special in this even compared to the rest of Europe, though. Not the word she bleeped out, that is hardly noteworthy if you are not overly prudish. But Germans do have a quirky fascination with errr, the waste products of biological bodies. And not just Knorkator, or Rammstein. 6. Meh, we sing along in all languages we speak, and those we do not speak, as well. My fave is listening to people singing along in Finnish. You know, all that cool Finnish metal. But if they need to feel shpeshul when we know their music, be our guests. We are just not so insecure that we bother noticing such things. Maybe she should compare it with folks knowing Rammstein texts by heart, and German is not exactly a language spoken around the globe. Which reminds me of a crime of my parents: I do not think I will ever forget the text of "voulez vous couchez avec moi, ce soir". In some areas you can still hear that song to this day, including the elderly folks singing along. I guess "voulez vous *bleep* avec moi" just doesn't cut it, so I figure no one would ever be tempted to sing along with such "pop culture" over there.

Regarding the whole iPhone issue: in Germany you have quite a lot of people who are rather critical of large companies like Google (or ABC as they are now called, I think?), facebook or Apple, because of their tendency to create all-encompassing, more or less closed and proprietary systems (speaking of both hardware and/or services). This business model is frowned upon as it is seen as some kind of "digital totality", which in itself carries the seed of a potential "digital totalitarianism", as in big companies watching, evaluating and in the end controlling every one of our digital footsteps. But you are also right in your vid, as often people state that they think that iPhones are "form over function" stuff that only works well because of the closed, proprietary nature of the Apple/iOS world, while being way overpriced when looked at as a simple piece of technology. People who prefer using Apple products are often refered to as "Apple disciples", meaning that they are drivenby some digital lifestyle cult instead of rational consideration.

The reason why we don’t want people to pay at the pump is that the margin on gas is still low. When they are in the shop there is a chance they buy a snack or drink on an impulse which have rather high profit margins. Most stations could not survive on gas sales alone

To me, as a german, "fuck" does not feel as strong as our german analogue. Perhaps it is because one can never really understand how this word is received by a native speaker. To me, it is basically a "light" version, perhaps even a real german word with its own meaning by now. We use our own "native" word a lot more sparingly (as demonstrated by the fact that i dont even write it here ;-) ). It feels like that we somehow managed to find a way to still say this word, without saying it.

They were asked if there were differences between fans in the different countries, certain habits that were more or less typical for those regions. The gas station thing is the same in a lot of countries; It's the business model; the people who run the gas stations dont make much or any money from fuel sales and just use them to get potential customers into what is essentially a convenience store. I think the fuel companies pay the capital costs or lease the floor space or something. If you go to a supermarket which sells fuel this doesn't apply, so you can pay at the pump.

Brothels are legal, because that was the best way to stop exploitation. Sex-workers, as we call them, get access to special medical monitoring, get social care and in return pay taxes. They can sue costumers and get statutory help in case of exploitation. So - no pimps, all the money goes directly to the worker. That all may seem disreputable, but you simply has to face the facts, that you can't thwart prostitution. And i think this typical german, to have a legal practical framework even for things, everyone else would rather like to vilify and in consequence scrap from the political agenda .
@TheYasmineFlower
@TheYasmineFlower 5 лет назад
Eh, it's not like it's really working to protect prostitutes. There's a reason Germany is called the brothel of Europe. Exploitation is still very real. Including human trafficking for sex work. Just banning it won't work, as the US shows, but the way we regulate prostitution isn't working out so well either. We need a better system still.
@xaverlustig3581
@xaverlustig3581 5 лет назад
All that aside, why should prostitution even be illegal? A crime is any act that damages another person or the general public. With prostitution, nobody is harmed. Moral outrage is not a good reason to outlaw something. It's the same logic why gay sex should not be illegal.
@flashnfantasy
@flashnfantasy 5 лет назад
There is no perfect solution, especially when the subject of matter is already a moral offside to start with. Legalizing prostitution was a delicate matter here in germany, and we did a very rational approach. In the end the pros beat moral objections. That germany became the brothel of europe is follow-up, that also has it pros and cons. With a legal status and a protective framework sex-work became lucrative for foreign nationals. On the first glance this may look like a failure, but basically this has drained women exploitation beyond our borders. I have just read in the Wikipedia (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prostitution_in_Germany) that you even may get visas for sex-working. Summarized, we did a very sensible approach to a scorned subject, and it had an impact how other countries see us. But i see it as walking an high road out of pure reasoning. And that's why i like it as part of the german culture.

Well, I'm a german who moved to the US and paying right at the gas pump for your gas was sort of a reverse culture shock for me XD Ok, more like it was part of the culture shock. I think the main reason for the US having to make it as efficient and quick as possible is that cars have a more prominent role in the US. Of course in germany most people own a car and there is quite a lot of traffic, but there are also a lot of people still using public transportation, which is not really an option in most places in the US, especially outside the cities, mostly because of how far everything is spread out. So I think Germany has less need for being being able to do everything from your car, because cars overall have a different value. I for example had a drivers license ever since I was able to get one, but I never had a car in Germany, because I was able to get everywhere by train, bus or on foot. I considered a car a waste of space and money, because I was able to do without one just fine and I lived in a small town as well as a city in germany. Since I moved to the US I can't really do without a car anymore, I wouldn't be able to get anywhere really. Just my 2 cents on the matter...

Apple used to be good, but it just kinda has fallen in terms of quality over the years. If apple does catch up, I would be happy to switch back again. @Duckiputz
@Duckiputz 5 лет назад
both Android and iOS have their points. I actually have both, being a Unix nerd, I was happy to finally see Linux based portables after so many false starts. the difference and in the case of Android, the problem, is the exosystem. The walled garden, if you like.Where Apple kept the garden neat and tidy, but would not cater to absolutely every tree or fruit taste, Google over the years simply lost control. the one Android garden does not exist, every manufacturer has its own, that still is connected to the main garden, but grows additional strange fruit (manufacturer specific apps and services). if you look closely, you‘ll find that Samsung locks you in just as Apple does. and every manufacturer has its own maintenance and release policy. I have 5 android tabs and only one of them can be updated to a sufficiently recent version of Android... meaning most of my devices are not sufficiently maintained to be safe to use with personal or otherwise sensitive data. Apple otoh normally gives you relevant udates rather quickly, but if you’re device is over 5 years old, you will. not receive the latest OS, often because the hardware has moved on. so, if walled garden, it has to be one that is kept. And yes, Android is a walled garden, too. The main difference is that Google doesn‘t exert the necessary control to make manufacturers keep their OS releases in line and secure, and allows Chinese Gardens where you really can‘t be sure if the Duck with Flied Lies is fresh and that the Lychees aren’t bugged.

Yes, and also additional to the taxes: There are cheap prices, for example for food, because we have one of the biggest low income sectors in Europe, when it comes to employment (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Uxs0asqdSAk.html). Now this also explains why the rents are high and getting higher from the (average) German's point of view, because they spend like 30 to 70 % of their income for these rents! Speaking for food prices there is not also overproduction ( a surplus in agricultural products, like in many "highly developed" countries with highly industrial agriculture ), but also cartell-like / monopolistic strutures in the companies owning the ruling supermarket and discounter chains, so they just can make up these prices and have the power to force these low prices on the local farmers, as well as affecting the income of the agricultural workers through it. Those are mainly from Romania and fewer and fewer from Poland ( who don't get "Mindestlohn" - minimum wage, but it's speial arrangement in the law that the farmers are allowed to pay under minimum wage and only must rise it slowy ever year to reach that wage somewhen next decade ). This power also affects the prices of imported food as well, mainly from Spain / Italy when it comes to vegetables, where the working conditions of migrants from mainly Africa are much worse and almost slave-like. To some degree the supermarket companies can use the cheap (vegetable) imports of these countries to increase pressure on local (conventional) farmers. Cheap imports, -> because the environment is destroyed (water crisis in Almería, Spain, external costs that are not included in the food prices for the consumer in Germany), and, -> because the workers are cheap(er) there. And in many cases THE MAFIA enforces these working situations there ( threatening workers and organising illegal immigration). Is it the same in the USA with Mexico and the Mexicans? However, WELCOME TO EUROPE. Meaning you basicly earn nothing with selling just gas, your profit depends on all the other convenience store items (drinks, food, sweets etc) And getting people to buy those when they do not have to enter the gas station building is pretty hard ;)

The gasstation point: we like paying with cash, we like face to face paying. we love going in the gasstation and getting some snacks and saying Hi to the cashier

Oh my god, when your friend came in and gave you the coffee, your voice was suddenly so enjoyable, pleasant and soft. To us you are almost screaming as if you were afraid that we could miss something.

#3: The popularity of the iPhone in the USA is probably also because it's seen as a more American phone than Android which is often associated with Samsung. Also, Apple invests huge amounts of money into advertising and marketing which is way more prominent in the USA. Also, Germans seem to be more interested in open software platforms and against the closed system of Apple's iOS and its iTunes store. I can't really see an iPhone as more of a luxury item than a similarly capable Android phone, even though the iPhones are typically much more expensive. Probably that was true seven or more years ago, but not in recent years.

Agreed. Of course, low price can be an advantage, but I usually do an extensive research before buying a new phone as I want to get 1. the biggest bang for the buck and 2. the best feature set with regard to my requirements and usage profile. Never in my research the iPhone offered any USP I really wanted. (+ No adapters needed. :D)

Why the heck should iPhones be so popular in Germany as they are in the US? I don’t see any reasonable reason for that. Apple is obviously an American brand, Americans buy American phones and cars, like Germans buy German washing machines and cars, French buy French cars, Italians buy Italian cars.. why should this be that surprising?

@@GlenDevan1970 well, android is made by Google. So, it's American. If we are talking about hardware, iPhones are pretty Asian, too. They are build by Foxconn, which is as non-American as a company can be.

As a german I have never experienced any of those smoking breaks during meals anywhere and I've even worked as a waiter before ... I'm pretty sure the places I eat at wouldn't just let everyone from the table get up and leave either without paying. That sounds super random to me and germans would be the first to frown upon such rude behaviour, if it were a common thing to happen. Also I don't smoke and I rarely know anyone who does.

I use Android because it integrates better with all my other devices. I'm running Linux and Windows computers and I don't want to use iTunes or any other software by Apple just to connect my devices. I'll always opt for the open platform if I get to chose and don't lose any vital feature by doing so. To me Apple seems to have great stuff - but I don't want to exclusively marry into that brand just for the sake of compatibility. Linux and Microsoft don't care where you install their OS - but for OSX you'll have to buy Apple? Keep it then. Plus I prefer stuff that I can tinker with myself - root it, change it, develop my own stuff for it on any device I chose to use and with any IDE I prefer - not being bound to some Apple SDK and their license restrictions. Of course the price is part of this too - I don't see the point in paying three or more times the money for a device that does less for me. Final reason: I don't really like their design that much and they only have "this one product line" - there is so much more diversity with Android devices, so I can find something that really suits me. To get cocky: yeah, Android scores higher in Germany - because we compare before we buy and we don't care about how much money someone else _thinks_ we have :p

I was born in Germany and just recently went back. I’m now making plans to move there in a short few years. I love Europe. Everything about it. I’m not saying I don’t love the U.S but I’m exhausted with this country.
