15 Biggest Chains In America That Will Disappear In The Months Ahead

If you have a favorite store, you should probably visit it soon since some of the biggest, most popular retail chains in the U.S. are rapidly decaying, and many locations are being shuttered in this very moment. According to UBS, over 50,000 stores are on retailers' chopping block, and that could completely change America's economic landscape. Never before in history, conditions have been so turbulent for companies, and even big names like Rite Aid, Amazon Fresh and Big Lots! are taking extreme measures to try to keep their business alive. However, retail experts seriously doubt the ability of some of this chains to survive the imminent retail collapse.
For example, Best Buy has been hanging by a thread over the past few years and quietly closing more stores each year. Since 2019, over 80 Best Buy locations have disappeared from sight. And earlier this year, the chain announced plans "to close a higher number of stores." The company did not reveal the total number of closings. Media reports suggest that at least 600 locations are in financial distress. That is over half of the retailer’s footprint in the U.S. In a BizJournals.com article, Best Buy CEO Corie Barry predicted that supply chain issues, rising labor costs, and continued economic challenges could lead to a major manufacturing slowdown that could ripple through the markets, she said. Best Buy executives said they expected business to continue to taper. Right now, they’re putting their best strategies forward in an attempt to keep the business alive, or at least, part of it.
Similarly, Dollar General is rapidly disappearing from U.S. cities. The discount retailer recently confirmed that it is closing several locations in California, Colorado, Indiana, and Ohio. And the reason may also be the catalyst that drives the entire chain into bankruptcy. According to the U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration, Dollar General continues to expose workers to unsafe conditions. The U.S. Department inspected a large number of locations and cataloged many serious health safety violations Dollar General has refused to correct. Since 2017, OSHA has issued more than $15 million in fines and cited Dollar General in more than 180 inspections nationwide for numerous “willful, repeat and alarming workplace safety violations related to unsafe conditions”: “Exposing employees and others to these hazards can be dangerous, especially in an emergency,” said OSHA Regional Administrator Kurt Petermeyer in Atlanta. “Dollar General is well aware of federal requirements, but they continue to ignore their legal responsibilities to protect their employees at stores throughout the nation.” The struggling company is now facing another millionaire lawsuit - one that can literally push it over the edge.
At this point, retailers must prove their worth to U.S. customers and show why they deserve a spot in this increasingly competitive industry. Only the best-positioned brands will be able to navigate through the crisis that is developing across the sector, and many will likely die out before the year ends. The stakes are incredibly high, and no one knows what may happen next in the industry, so take the opportunity to go to your favorite store before a black swan event occurs, drastically changing the scenario from bad to completely disastrous. That's why in today's video, we compiled a series of retail stores that are at risk of going dark for good in the coming weeks and months, and some that are already liquidating all of their assets and saying farewell for their customers.

One problem that has been a part of the American landscape for a long time is that upper management of companies are ridiculously over paid and perked. And then, though they have failed and driven a company into the ground, they still get very large golden parachutes, how insane is that???

I've come to realize that the key to amassing wealth lies in making sound investments. I purchased my first home at the age of 21 for $87,000 and sold it for $197,000. My second home, acquired for $170,000, was later sold for $320,000, and my third property, purchased at $300,000, fetched $589,000, with buyers covering all closing costs and expenses. Not reaching a million before retirement feels like an unfulfilled goal.-

As far as Dollar General is concerned in South Jersey they have opened so many stores in the past 2 years it's ridiculous. Every store is the same as far as not enough staff to run their stores effectively, let alone even open up on any given day if the employee's show up for work. Stores are a disaster as far as merchandising with merchandise scattered all over the aisles making it beyond difficult to shop. Not a store to frequent because they're a mess.

I worked for Big Lots once. Everyone who asks is hired for full time but only management gets the hours. They keep you under hours so they don't need to give you the benefits promised. They are constantly hiring new people to replace we who leave for livable pay. Therefore, most employees can't help customers effectively because they haven't learned where everything is. My manager was so obsessed with superficial numbers and deadlines pushed by corporate, he didn't realize the employees quickly stocking product were breaking things. Which is why some stuff gets returned; and then put back on shelves in hopes someone buys it, making the place look trashy. They also stuffed food on shelves, not pulling the old stuff to the front. Which results in a lot of food expiring on the shelves. Then taking up space. All of this adds up to lost revenue. The fools killed themselves by not understanding how to run a successful business on the individual store level. Good Riddance.

We were so short handed and they wouldn't let the stockier get 40 hours or anyone but management. There were times they busted my chops about getting over 40 hours but when you work no store manager then another two quit only 2 supervisors and my self. there was one week i gross 56.5 got my chopped busted again no other manger other one on vacation. So either me go home close the store tell everyone go home or stay until close witch 9 time i get out of there about 10 then do a turn burn in the morning at 7am and open at 8pm. It was crazy.

In our area, stores that are doing well are Ross, Dollar Tree, Marshalls, TJ Maxx, Grocery Outlet, Lowes, Harbor Freight, Home Depot, Target, Costco & of course Walmart. I always see a lot of people shopping & the prices are cheap or reasonable. The problems with the failed stores are expensive prices, trashy products, dirty messy stores, overly stocked racks that are confusing/overwhelming. They mark up each item so much that consumers don't buy, they target instant big profit instead of profiting reasonably through quantity selling.

I noticed that since moving down here. The Walgreens are clean, pretty decently staffed and organized, and for what it is, the prices aren’t aweful. The CVS around the corner, though? Aside from the pharmacist, there’s usually only ONE person on the sales floor, also ringing, stocking, cleaning, answering phones, assisting any customers on the floor, pulling stock from the backroom to get out on the floor, etc. I felt so freaking bad for the girl working there last time I had to go to pick up a medication I needed. She was so nice, and was doing her absolute best, but you could tell she was on the verge of either crying or saying EFF IT, and quitting on the spot. And really, I wouldn’t blame her if she did. I watched a RU-vid video a few years ago and the person who made the video was an entrepreneur. He said he had built a successful company from the ground up and got to the point to where he felt he needed professional management running the business because it was getting too complex. He hired someone with a Harvard MBA who promised to take the company to a new level but demanded a ridiculous salary. The business owner agreed to the terms expecting exceptional results. Almost immediately the company started losing money. Customer complaints grew and he had to start laying off employees to prevent losses. The Harvard MBA kept saying it was all part of the plan and was needed as part of the restructuring. It got to the point where the company was just about to go bankrupt. The business owner fired the Harvard MBA and took back control of the company. Almost immediately the company began to see profits. The business owner later found out that the Harvard MBA bankrupted every company he ran. He would just go from company to company and impress them with his Ivy League credentials, but was really just a moron. Most of these companies have armies of Ivy League stooges that have no clue what they are doing. They are just arrogant zombies that are fixated with promotions, titles and status. They know nothing about the basics. It’s no wonder all these companies are going broke at the same time. They just follow the “flavour of the month “ business plan and put zero thought in what they are doing.

What we're seeing is the end result of a continuing decline in the standard of living of Americans, as the 50 year trend of decreasing wages and job security lowers the standard of living of Americans. With everybody working longer hours at jobs that don't pay decent wages and that won't even employ people full-time, people no longer have the time, energy nor disposable income to go to stores and shop. This is the disappearance of the American middle class and the rise of a two-tiered society of have mores vs have nots. There is the professional/managerial elite on top and the working poor on the bottom, just as the political elite have wanted for so long. Welcome to the new America.

It's not just economic problems that are causing these stores to close. Online sales through platforms like Amazon are cutting shopping at retail outlets. Online shopping has been the major contributor to decreased sales in retail outlets. If they did not get on the online sales bandwagon, they will be left behind. The economy is cutting into people's spending but it's not the major source of retail outlet closures. Go online or go out of business. It's the new way of shopping.

Signs were showing to us drivers that it was time to bail out or end up going down with the Rite Aid ship. Glad I jumped ship.

As a foreigner travelling through the USA, I always found the retail offer huge, also including specialty stores for so many ‘non essential’ items. Inside stores, I found staff generally very friendly, but not very efficient. Vendors work cash registers often slowly, and staffs knowledge about the range they sell can be limited: too many different items on sale, too young or old staff, not enough investment in training ? Then I always wondered also about these long opening hours, often till 8, 10 or even 11 pm, and also opening on sundays. While easy for customers, these huge facilities need so many hours a week of staffing, cooling/heating. As compared to Europe, I also found mysterious promotions and reductions all over the place. I remember so many times that at the cash register I paid less then expected, because some kind of promotional action was active that I even wasn’t aware of. As if US customers are in a continuous promotion mood, and not just at certain moments of the year for season-related products. I often felt lucky I had weight and size restrictions on my luggage for travelling back by plane to Europe: I found US stores loaded with an extremely large offer of ‘nice to have’ stuff, and ‘decorative items’ , but these items are in no way essential for decent and healthy living. As if the consumer needs to ‘have’ products, even if they are not going to ‘use’ or ‘need’ the items. In other words, I found the US market very wastefull, gadget oriented. I oftn wondered how economically viable all of this was, and now we are seeing that it is definitely NOT always viable. On top of that, the offer is very wastefull on resources and energy, and creates a lot,of waste. I also expect I large number of items on offer being produced rather cheaply in Asia, in the end not benefitting US producers. I know I accumulated a lot of stereotypes here, but I wanted to express my feeling that the present retail evolution was in a sense to be expected, the previous way of doing things just being too wastefull.

I was recently at a local outlet mall and it was very eye-opening. I don't normally do malls/outlet malls but was with a friend who was looking for a specific piece of furniture in the way of a small cabinet. The entire outlet mall was virtually deserted. The only store that really seemed to be doing any real business was the Nike Outlet. Every single retailer was offering huge discounts, averaging 50% - 60%, and even with those discounts the prices of everything in the stores we browsed were unbelievably expensive and there were practically no customers buying anything. Employees were sparse, and mostly engaged in their phones, no one cared to make a sale or draw us in. And ultimately no store had anything close to what we were looking for, so no money was spent. I am surprised they are still in business at all by this point. Same goes for most fast food places and many restaurants. Portions are smaller, prices are thru the roof, good service is hard to come by as is good food, more often than not the places are dirty (if they offer dine-in; many places here still have spotty or no lobby hours,) and the experience is so disappointing that I just shy away from eating out more often than not anymore. It had great quality items at super cheap prices, plus exotic/foreign foods that I couldn't find elsewhere. Weird thing they had was Fingerhut returns - always seemed so out of place there. Over the years, their quality got worst than Dollar General, but prices went up. Tuesday Morning is one of those stores my friend and I would make road trips to get to, just for the craft supplies. We'd easily spend hundreds every trip, but then their craft section kept getting tinier and tinier, so no point in going. I'm not surprised DG is unsafe - around here, they slap those buildings up in weeks, most barely better than a portable garage, and it's rare to see more than one employee at a time in there. Retailing isn't the best barometer of economic conditions. Some malls should never have been built. Established retail brands tend to overbuild over time. Some corporations have used urban crime stories to cover their removal of underperforming stores. However, when multiple retail brands selling dissimilar goods have significant and simultaneous problems, it's a warning sign. Lots of brands are overbuilt but this is feeling more like a demand-driven correction. Inflation has been a thing for two years. When people have to pay a lot more for food, rent, and utilities, they have fewer dollars to spend at Party City, Big Lots, etc. Watch for those going out of business sales.

"Self checkout" in San Francisco (and other cities on the west coast) is when a non-paying customer fills a backpack or shopping cart full of goods then races for the exit. These stores are "low inventory" because of the rampant shoplifting. The only items left on the shelves are behind locked cabinets. Of course the corporations who own the brick and mortar stores won't acknowledge the real problem.

So we tried to go through her things but it was just too hard without her able to help. Ebay fees and USPS shipping costs got to high for me to make any money from doing that. I myself got sick a few years ago and haven't really recovered to be able to find another way to make any money. With so many of these stores selling the exact same merchandise it is no surprise that at some point a saturation of the market was going to take place. Stores like Bad Bath and Beyond, Tuesday Morning, Big Lots, Marshalls, TJMaxx, Ross, etc. are all selling the same schlocky stuff. Then you have to factor in that Walkmart and Target are also selling a lot of the same schlocky stuff and its a perfect storm for mass store closures and layoffs.

Everyone got a salary increase due to "growth". They discontinued popular items and kept ones that didn't sell. Next thing I knew the doors were locked and I got a letter from their creditor saying the companies assets were "frozen" and we would get paid "IF" there was any money left after their cut - of course there wasn't. When I need an item I search on line and can find high name brands for $20-$30 less than found in stores. Even with shipping they were less. It is down to being able to save money for gas and less stress on line. Seeing the jobs leaving and those needing working in the service industry is even sadder Ordering from the named stores can be done on line. Not surprising that "discretionary spending" stores like Bed, Bath and Beyond are going bankrupt. It is a little distressing that chains like Rite-Aid are closing down. In America, drug addiction is the one reliable predictor of commerce. CVS and Walgreen's will definitely be the only two drug store chains left in the U.S. Especially since Albertson's (Safeway, Pavilions, etc.), Wal-Mart and Costco all have in-store pharmacies.

@TuNnL
@TuNnL Год назад
@@brgessner not sure how this is relevant to my comment, but you need a prescription to get the type of medication that is the real "moneymakers" for drug stores. Often, these are written prescriptions which expire within seven days, so "online sources" are not a viable option. 💉💊

Another part of the drug stores are insurance companies. We had Walmart who then stopped taking our insurance. When we used Walmart the copay varied and was more than $5, we now use Publix for medication that is temporary or one that needs dr approval. We also use medications by mail
@TuNnL
@TuNnL Год назад
@@viewer47ful that's a great point, and a huge reason CVS/Caremark is beating the competition. Unlike Walgreen's, Rite-Aid, Good Neighbor, etc., CVS is an industry leader in mail-order, meaning you can easily transfer prescriptions from their in-store pharmacy to mail order. Insurance companies prefer mail order as orders are dispensed in 90-day quantities, as opposed to in-store pharmacies, which are typically a 30-day supply. Any company other than CVS, if they even have mail order, are generally outsourcing this service to an outside company. This is probably the case with Wal-Mart, who insurance companies likely don't want to deal with since they aren't as established as the "hard-core" drug companies. 💉📜💊
