Hey, new subscriber here!!! 👋🏾. I love your channel 😊 I’m half way through The Warmth of Other Suns. I absolutely love this book. It’s sad, happy, humbling, motivating, educational and definitely thought provoking. If it weren’t for my taking African American related courses in college and reading books like these, I would not be able to comprehend the full impact of slavery on the world and black culture.

I LOVED The Warmth of Other Suns! Wilkerson weaves in individual stories with broader facts well and the narratives have really stuck with me. I was ecstatic to see it is going to be getting adapted by Shonda Rhimes into an 8 part series. The only critique I would make is the introductory notes ahead of each chapter can occasionally get repetitive, like many nonfiction books. I do think there would be so much to discuss with folks after reading it and would definitely tune in to a liveshow on it!

Two notes: 1. I also heard nothing but great things about the Warmth of the other Sums, I'll probably read it next month. 2. There are so many Haitian-American/Canadian/French authors out there . . . we (you, I, all of us) need to dig a little further . . . and maybe learn French or Spanish. We are every where. Thanks for sharing. I'm reading "The Rebellious Life of Mrs. Rosa Parks"

Great recs! Im going to start with Homegoing since i have that on my shelf, but you listed so many great ones. I definitely want to read more from Jesmyn Ward - ive only read Sing Unburied Sing so far. I also want to read all of Chimamanda's writings, only have read the Feminist Manifesto. Have you read many of hers? If so which one would you recommend i read next?
@LEFTONREAD
@LEFTONREAD 5 лет назад
Thank you and yes Homegoing is an amazing start! Happy reading think you will love it. For Jesmyn Ward I am biased but you cannot go wrong with whichever you choose next. For Chimamanda I’ve read manifesto and we should all be feminists. As for her larger books like Americanah that people rave about, I have not read so cannot recommend.

warmth of other suns is a really good book and it's really worth reading (it's american, so if you're american, definitely, but if not, only if you're interested in modern america) but omg does she repeat herself, this drove me up the wall so bad for so long, i felt one third of that book needed excising. She does it: statement, paragraph expanding, repeat. Or repeats it a few pages on. Certain sentences reappear just every so often. One man works on the train, if i read 'his work took him north and south, from freedom to jim crow law zone and back' once, i read it two or three hundred times. So it's like a ten out of ten book with a huge nasty drawback, but you do get used to it. I actually bought it - i never buy books - for my father, and he didn't mind this. Nobody else has mentioned it in any reviews. But it's worth expecting it because i was expecting this so amazing five star book and i nearly gave up so many times. In all other ways it is that five star book. Her level of research and her way of doing it and the amount of work she put in are amazing. me, i'm reading Congo, that long history book that came out about ten years ago, the hardback has an incredible cover that's a piece of modern art, but i'm reading it on kindle as i do with all backbreakingly heavy books. My plan is to read it over a whole year, bit by bit, which i always do with hard difficult long books - warmth of other suns isn't that, and a quarter of its pages are bibliography - trying to force yourself to read such books as if they were YA is setting yourself up to fail, i feel. The important trick is, to keep coming back to it regularly. Congo's big problem is lousy maps, too small, not enough detail, and not enough of them or near enough the page. Such books should come either with maps, or with a map book you buy separately, in proper full colour and scale, as an optional extra for the truly enthusiastic.

Sister dont be deceived. Use ur hand held cpu(cellphone) and look up pagan valentine day. While u at it pagan holidays.. Your history is the bible shalom. We only kw American black history from 1600's. Go back further, trace the ship's. Look up the names on the slave ships. Arab slave trade sold us to Christians. This in your 1964 Britannica encyclopedia.
