Something else I recommend is "The Velvet Rope Economy" (circa 2020) by Nelson Schwartz. When I got done with this book, I understood why, everyone is taught to discriminate or be racist.

Slavery By Another Name and Medical Apartheid are both great books. Assata by Assata Shakur was very informative regarding the justice system in the 70s, and it was hilarious as well. Great video.

Enticing recommendations! Some I hadn't heard of before and I'm always happy to expand my TBR. 😁 My suggestion for a recommendation would be The Portable Nineteenth-Century African American Women Writers by Hollis Robbins and Henry Louis Gates Jr.. I loved the scope and spectrum of this anthology, both in terms of writers, literary forms and subjects. It was a very rich experience for me.

Thanks for the recommendation! I'm always looking for more books on black history both in the U.S. and from the larger African Diaspora.

As a retired Navy man, I enjoy military history. One of my favorite books I read this year was 'All Blood Runs Red.' It is the fascinating story of Eugene Bullard, the first black American pilot who fought for France in the first World War. He went on to become a Paris nightclub impresario, a spy in the French Resistance and an American civil rights pioneer. An excellent and informative read.

Hello~ I was in high school in the 70’s. We were assigned to read “Black Like Me” and to write a paper. About a white man blacking his face & skin to learn just how black men were treated. The other book is “Hellhound on His Trail,” by Hampton Sides whose father was an attorney for Dr. King.

When I think of black history I think of books like , "Before The Mayflower", by Lerone Bennet, "Black History" , Albert Brimmer, , "The Miseducation of the Negro", by Carter G Woodson and a more modern book, "Four Hundred Souls", which is a compilation of authors that was edited by Ibram X. Kendi and Keisha BN. Blain.

Moore, America's First Civil Rights Martyr by Ben Green I hope you use one and if not maybe you can do a review on them yourself either way… I hope this helps 🙏🏽

Thank You Dr. Freeman for making this contribution. Your number one book, 'Narrative of Fredrick Douglass' has definitely been added to my shortlist. But as a 70 yr old man, who grew up in one of the whitest suburbs in the Midwest North of Chicago, I truly only began my black history journey in the last two years. One of the books that turned me around was written by a white historian. I am in the process of reading her book for the 3rd time, I had to unlearn what I thought I knew. You really can’t claim to understand the United States until you understand the history of class struggle in America 🇺🇸 “White Trash: 400 Yr Untold History of Class in America” ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-s_Gq2qDwFpA.html (Start interview at 4:16) And realize, that we were always considered to be at the bottom, underneath poor whites. Everything made sense after reading that book... And especially today's current events.

You did not mention the word technology. The technology of the cotton gin affected all of US by changing the economics of cotton. I started reading Science Fiction in 4th grade. It changed my perspective of reality even though my mother called it "something crazy". Black Man's Burden (1961) by Mack Reynolds When Africa Awakes (1922) by Hubert Harrison Both free in the public domain. The computers are everywhere. There is No Escape! Daemon & Freedom by Daniel Suarez

@drjasonfreeman

I plan to do a list of books written by African writers and some of them will deal with experiences other than slavery. But the list I'm presenting in the deals specifically with black history in the United States, which is tightly linked with slavery.

'Their Eyes were Watching God' seems similar to Kindred by Octavia E Butler in the immersive descriptions of slavery from a women's perspective. Gut-wrenching.
@drjasonfreeman
@drjasonfreeman Год назад
I've not read Kindred, but I loved "Their Eyes Were Watching God" because it told a story from a Black Woman's perspective, which included critiques of the treatment of Black women by black men. It made me reconsider how I interacted with black women in my own life and how my actions might affect them.
