A huge reason many people are struggling financially is because of the inability to know the difference between a want and a need. And the reason it is becoming harder is because society has become so complex that so many things that were once wants are starting to become needs to function in society. In this video, I share 15 common necessities that frugal people don’t buy because they’re not necessities.
1. Amazon Prime Membership
In many ways we do need to buy things on Amazon because they have certain things that you can’t find anywhere else; however, we don’t need an Amazon Prime membership because as long as you spend over $35, you will get free shipping.
2. Anything Unnecessarily Fast And Convenient
Big Tech companies have made everything unnecessarily fast and convenient; however, this hasn’t improved our lives but it has just made people impatient and homebodies. Frugal people are more patient and don’t seek these fast and convenient things.
3. Fiber Internet
In order to live in the modern world, you do need to have the internet. Many people, however, choose to get extremely fast internet speeds like getting fiber. You do need speeds that fast in order to have a good internet connection.
4. Expensive Phone Plans
Having a cell phone is another thing that you need to function in the modern world; however, you do not need to choose one of the main carriers. Frugal people choose to use cheaper plans like Mint mobile for $15/month.
5. Unlimited Data
In addition to a cell phone plan, you need to have data to function in the modern world; however, you do not need unlimited data. Frugal people choose data plans between 5-10 gbs of data in order to not overpay.
6. New Cell Phones
Although we need cell phones to function, whenever you need a new cell phone, you do not need to buy a new one. Frugal people choose to buy used cell phones on ebay to save money.
7. Organic, Gluten Free, Freerange, Farm to Table, blah blah blah blah blah
Food companies and restaurants often use fancy words to get people to spend more money on foods; however, these words are often just empty. Frugal people buy good quality food, but avoid spending more on these fancy words.
8. Meat
Eating meat in moderation is good for your body, but most people end up eating two times more than they need in a day. Frugal people eat meat, but only in moderation.
9. Single Use Bottled Water
Everyone in this world needs water in order to survive, but nobody need to overpay for bottled water. Bottled water costs substantially more than tap water and is just as good.
10. Supplements
If you eat a balanced diet of fruits and vegetables, then you do not need to take supplements. Frugal people do not buy supplements and instead eat a balanced diet.
11. Paper Towels
Paper towels are in the kitchen of most people; however, they are completely unnecessary. There are some situations where you do need paper towels, but for most cases rags are fine.
12. An Excess of Animal Stuff
Having a pet around the house is not anti-frugal. Many people, however, choose to spend a bunch of money and shower their pet with presents, but this is unnecessary. Frugal people shower their pets with love and peanut butter.
13. Work Lunch
Many people choose to eat out for lunch every day at work, which costs a lot of money and is unnecessary. Frugal people choose to bring lunch to work to save money.
14. Tips
In recent years, tipping has become more normal in industries where it was not normal before and many people feel the need to tip everywhere. Frugal people choose to pay in cash to avoid tipflation.
15. Debt
The final common necessity that frugal people don’t buy is debt. Many people think that you need debt in order to live a comfortable life, but it is completely unnecessary.

I've never enjoyed the taste of coffee and, for some reason, never really enjoyed anything with caffeine, except a few times where I've enjoyed chocolate or a dark soda, but even those are very rare. It's the same with alcohol. It's not a religious thing, I just never took to the taste and saw too many problems with consequences from people who do drink alcohol. I can only imagine how much money I've saved through the years.

People have different priorities. I buy the freshest best quality food I can find. I'm 76, live alone, don't eat much and not expensive food, but it has to be fresh and organic if possible. Never ate much meat. Not into 'Gluten-free' etc. Don't have a car and have a bad Knee, so i cant get around very well. AMAZON is essential. Everything from out-of-print or foreign-language books to cat litter. I have Prime. One reason? Extra discounts at WHOLE FOODS. I do buy WHOLE FOODS' brand of Spring Water in gallon jugs for drinking and cooking because the Tap Water is horrible in this city. I use Paper Towels in the Kitchen because - who has an unlimited supply of Rags??? But my Cat gets Food and Love. Period. No Toys and no 'Treats.' That's all she wants. TIPS - I'm against them. Also a lot of stores are asking you to donate to some charity. This is another scam. YOU donate - the Store gets a tax write-off.

I never buy water as it's worlds cheaper to get a proper water filter. Not the cheap Brita ones - but the better ones that filter lead and the actual harmful stuff. Yes, DO tip. But always in cash and always directly to the poor worker. Remember that many states pay less than minimum wage as a "tip credit" to the employer. If they make $20 in cash and force the employer to pay minimum wage on top of that, then they win.

Gluten free is essential if you are coeliac. It's not a fad nor a luxury. And many people died from this, it ended up in death certificates as chronic stomach complaints but mostly it was being malnourished. Food is very important to your overall health. Same with supplements, not all but some. For instance I take vitamin D3 simply because I'm deficient and many people are. It's necessary for calcium uptake. Also vitamin K. For sure I can try to get 15 minutes of sunshine in winter but that's a tough ask right now. Vitamin K I can get from mushrooms, or cheese. I don't take either vitamin if I've done either measure that day. Ignoring health issues is not frugal it's stupid. If your bones are depleted it makes no sense telling someone you were too frugal to take your supplements. Of course people can be excessive and it's just expensive pee if you are taking vitamins excessively. Also a lot of our food is depleted so in some things I eat organic. One is leafy greens, but not all. The main thing is to avoid greens that are excessively full of pesticides. There, I said it. But not all veg and fruits absorb a lot of pesticides. Leafy greens do. Potatoes do. Carrots don't, pumpkins don't. Just get a summary of the ones that are full it them, avoid and buy those items organically. If you aren't eating out, if you aren't eating junk food, if you don't drink alcohol or go on benders, I think a bit of organic is OK. Just don't be excessive with it. Animals need regular vet visits and proper diets. Do not scrimp on pet food it's false economy. Give them a bit of proper meat to chew on at the end of their meals, it is great for their gums and teeth. Tooth extractions are massively expensive for vet controlled animals. Find out why the biological weakness of your animal is, mine has a tendency to experience too much water.

I see value in the Prime Membership for one big reason: it enables you pull the trigger on products you’re tracking at the moment the price dips to something you’re happy with. If something is listed for $19.99 and they run a deal where it’s $13.99, you can’t buy that item without buying more things or paying for shipping. Prime lets you lurk then and buy at the best prices. Of course you have to be patient and diligent in your tracking for this to work, but my wife and I use Amazon *a lot* and we’ve gotten well beyond the price of our Prime membership in discounts. I also just want to say this: not often, but sometimes you DO need things in 1-2 days.

I love my Amazon Prime. I was able to get a student rate for many years... something like $59 per year. I also don't pay for streaming services or cable and use Amazon for streaming and free music options. I guess I'm lucky to be in a very busy, overpopulated city where Amazon actually will deliver numerous items the same day, or even in a few hours. I'm disabled, and for me to navigate the busy traffic, get to a store, wait in line to make a purchase, and then drive back home takes me a good couple hours depending on the store. Amazon has saved me tons of time, and money on gas. The items I get for the most part are essentials you can get in the grocery store, and sometimes even cheaper, especially with special discounts. If you hold something in your cart sometimes you will get a special Prime discount coupon making the item very reasonable in cost. They also will take my HSA card for things like shampoo and toothpaste. And not to mention the Amazon Pharmacy is actually cheaper to pay a cash price than to go through my insurance and fill it at a local store with my copay. Since I live alone and don't have the help I need, Amazon has been a lifesaver for me
@mashort07
@mashort07 2 месяца назад
@@jessicaroyal57, love to hear it. You have special circumstances being disabled but you touched upon a few things I would have said had I was writing an article. Not only does Amazon have things you can’t find in stores, but even if you could there is transportation expenses and a time cost that’s eliminated with Amazon. Their dominance may not be good for the U.S. economy at large, but there’s a reason they’re so dominant and I’m not about to cut off my nose to spite my face. They have endless options, great prices, an easy return policy, plenty of reviews to help make decisions and frankly, there is something to be said for free 1-2 day shipping. $150 a year is $12.50 a month and we didn’t even touch upon Prime Video. If it was $300 a year we could start having a conversation, but frugal people aren’t stingy people. If they find value in Prime, they’ll invest in it. And for me, there is absolutely value in Prime.

I agree with almost all of these but the organic and gluten free. Unfortunately companies like Monsanto have damaged our food supply to the point where chemicals are actually changing the protein content of crops and making them indigestible. I've been tested and the connections between my health issues, gluten and also chemicals is quite clear. Altered foods are also now being attributed to things like low-grade Austism and a number of other conditions, particularly in children. The cells of my body can no longer process many foods due to an overload of chemicals and toxins in foods. For whatever reason I seem to be more susceptible than some people but many suffer from this and don't realize it. Hence the need for organic, gluten free, and some supplements, though I keep these to a minimum as much as possible. Please, everyone, do yourselves a favor and educate yourselves about the food industry, particularly in this country. And about the pet food industry if you have pets.

How is meat unnecessarily expensive with the excessive amounts of water, the feed, the processing, the transport that’s required to get it the consumer. Also, by shopping at Amazon, people are taking tax dollars away from their own communities, and the evil man doesn’t even pay his fair share to maintain the infrastructure that he’s fully benefitting from.

Generally agree with your list, but have a few exceptions: 1.) we do shop organic produce for the “dirty dozen” where it truly matters to avoid pesticides. However, we buy them from a produce market where the prices are similar to non-organic (and higher quality & way cheaper than chain grocery store), plus for over 45 years they have had in back of store and “ugly vegetables” section where imperfect fruits & vegetables are like half the cost. 2.) I get my Amazon Prime for free 🆓 as the 2nd person on the family account of a friend (my billing & delivery location is separate/different). The only thing I can’t do is loan or be loaned a kindle book from another prime user. 3.) I meet friends out for coffee instead of lunch, and I don’t pay $6 for it. I order a small plain old coffee and get the free refills. This started out because one friend couldn’t afford to buy lunch out, & another had to be careful about ingredients & preparation of food so we settled on coffee at a halfway meeting spot.

I was all ears till don’t eat too much meat. Sorry but I have been carnivore over 6 months now. The best decision I ever made. The health aspect is huge and I feel so good. I’m 71. Inflammation went within days which led to me reducing the amount of falls I was having. Nil body odour. Hair is less gray and more as it was in my teens. Weight loss huge. Some say it’s expensive but really don’t eat all steak but beef patties and sausages are ok from time to time.High fat and zero carbs. Water is essential. I believe I am frugal as I don’t eat vegetables or fruit as I was never a fan of either so my transition to meat only was an easy decision. I follow Dr Westman and Baker, and Berry.

There are a handful of fruits and vegetables known as the "dirty dozen," where it's recommended (by various environmental groups) to buy them organic, if possible. A few examples are strawberries, kale, and grapes. In my experience, non-organic berries, in particular, often taste bitter. I'm less likely to splurge for organic bananas, mangoes, or coconuts, where you're not going to eat the skin/shell. That said, organic farming is also better for the environment, though not always as much as we think. I recommend reading Michael Pollan's "The Omnivore's Dilemma" for more info about this: a library/or second-hand copy, of course. LOL Fun video and I'm with you on pet stuff, paper towels, and endless tipping, for sure!
@ElAgustin
@ElAgustin 3 месяца назад
Yeah, some things like lettuce are good, but the word can also be misleading. I think the best solution is to buy from a local farmer, but it's not always realistic. It's also interesting because although the farming is more natural, it's not a sustainable way to feed the world as the world's population is too big and it would require too much space. I was a huge Michael Pollan fan growing up. I liked his recent show on Netflix!
@susandean8584

We can easily grow enough food to feed the entire population of the planet. The biggest problem is that way too much of what is currently grown is fed to animals so that they can be slaughtered for food. If animal agriculture was eliminated crops could be grown to feed humans directly. Moreover, no need to cut down expansive areas to rainforest to raise cows for food. Beans, lentils, potatoes, onions, and bananas are amongst the least expensive and most nutritious foods in the supermarket.

Great video, I agree on most of the points except for #12 (or perhaps I’m just adding on to it): owning a pet by itself is generally a want and not a need, with some exceptions. The food, the vet fees, the insurance, the time, the destroyed furniture, etc. Owning a pet is a wonderful experience for sure, and I’m not saying it is a bad thing, but again it is a want and not a need that frugal people might want to reconsider.

And i save tons of money and tons of plastic every year. Phones? Yes. Of course, we need more and more apps. But even older phones can do that. Personally - i love to buy luch at work (it is part of benefits, i have it cheap). It is nice thing at work. I'm bored of every day sandwitches. And sandwitches cost too. It is fair treat for me. I agree with most of the things you say and have learned so much from you about finance and frugality. As a dietitian, I disagree with this theory on food. I have a many clients who are allergic to gluten and have severe reactions to both gluten and pesticides in conventionally grown foods. Not everyone has these health problems, but it’s not just a hipster trend. It’s a serious medical consideration for a lot of people. Also if people are eating perfectly healthy food then maybe they don’t need supplements, but that is not the case for most Americans. Nutrient deficiencies also cause health problems which can be rapidly improved using targeted supplementation. Not all my clients need supplements, but a lot of them benefit from it and tell me within weeks or even days of starting a supplement that their symptoms are improving. All this being said, thank you for what you do. You are one of my favorite RU-vidrs and I watch your videos all the time. Keep bein silly.
