10:19 Am I Upgrading Too Quickly
As you get older and start to make more money, your standards will get higher and you will want to upgrade your life. Sadly, when many people upgrade their lives they run into financial problems. You can avoid these problems, however, simply by asking yourself questions. In this video, I talk about 8 questions you need to ask yourself before upgrading your lifestyle.
1. Can I Afford This Upgrade?
This question is very obvious, but often people don't ask themselves if they can afford to upgrade something in their life before doing it. Before you upgrade something, it is important to look at your finances to see if you can afford it and it won't cause you financial problems.
2. Why Am I Upgrading?
Another obvious question that people don't often ask themselves is why exactly are they wanting to upgrade something. Many people choose to upgrade things in their lives for no reason other than they aren't thinking. Before you upgrade something, it is important to understand why exactly you want to upgrade your lifestyle.
3. What Are The Most Important Pieces To My Upgrade?
A common problem people face when they upgrade things in their life is trying to have it all; however, unless money is no object, you will have to prioritize what you want and what you'll be fine going without. Before you upgrade something, it is important to prioritize what is most important to your upgrade and what you are fine with going without so you don't overspend.
4. How Can I Maximize My Money Spent?
When you are upgrading something, it is important to get what you want, but it is also important to make sure you are maximizing your money being spent. If you do research beforehand and look at all your options, you can find options where you get more for your money. So before you upgrade something, look at all your options and choose the option where you get the most for your money.
5. Am I Over Upgrading?
Oftentimes when people upgrade things in their lives, they overspend on getting features they won't use. An example of this is getting a car that has features that go unused with your lifestyle. Before upgrading something, be practical and get exactly what you need rather than getting things you won't use.
6. What Are Other Costs Associated With The Upgrade?
Oftentimes when people upgrade things in their lives, they focus on the single thing they're upgrading and overlook the other costs associated with the upgrade. Before upgrading something, is important to zoom out and look at the big picture of all the other costs that you will encounter with your upgrade.
7. Is This Upgrade Sustainable In The Long Term?
The thing about upgrading your lifestyle, is that once you have something nicer or of higher quality, it is hard to go back to what you had before. So before upgrading something, make sure that you are financially ready for that you be your new normal or you could trap yourself in a life you can't afford.
8. Am I Upgrading Too Quickly?
When we start upgrading things in our lives, we can often go overboard and try to upgrade everything at once, which can create financial problems. As you're upgrading your lifestyle, don't rush and do it is a sustainable way that will allow you to avoid financial problems.

At the very least, I now grasp the concept of leverage. Creating wealth and financial freedom isn't as tough as many people believe. Building wealth and remaining financially stable indefinitely is a lot easier with the appropriate information. Participating in financial programs and products is the only true approach to make a high income and remain affluent indefinitely.

It's often true that people underestimate the importance of financial advisors until they feel the negative effects of emotional decision-making. I remember a few summers ago, after a tough divorce, when I needed a boost for my struggling business. I researched and found a licensed advisor who diligently helped grow my reserves despite inflation. Consequently, my reserves increased from $275k to around $750k.

Men have it much easier; society does not require you took look beautiful or younger, so you can take showers, let you hair go grey (like Agustin), no pedicures, pretty clothes, etc. You can stay single without society pressuring to get married, which saves you a lot of money. In short, it is cheaper to be man :)

Hi, I "invented" a shopping system during such times. I would go to the large general stores and scan the shelves. But I didn't scan the items... Just the prices. If anything was 99 cents and under, then I would carefully consider whether I would buy that item or not. Often, I considered it for days😆. It taught me to be extremely frugal, controlled and thoughtful before I spent any money. Plus it caused me often to spend €3 a day on groceries. (That about $22 a week) I wish someone had shown me that system when I was a kid and taught me to be frugal and save at a early age. I'd be a multimillionaire now.

I downgraded from a three bedroom house to a one bedroom apartment because I decided to retire at 64 and my housing expenses were more than I wanted to pay. For the most part, I am very content in this smaller space. I have rented storage space and my goal is to consolidate that to reduce that expense as well. I also relocated from a larger city to a smaller one which has reduced my expenses and my amount of driving. I have moved many times in my life so these changes have less of a negative effect on me than they might on someone who is less open to change in their life. To me, it is all an adventure! Great video, as always! Would love an apartment tour!

We also downgraded from a home with acreage in the country to a smaller house in town. A lot of our friends thought we were crazy, but I can honestly say that our quality of life went up. We are closer to shopping and entertainment, we have less yard and house to maintain and overall our utilities have gone down, even with paying for water and sewer (which we didn't have before). Yeah, we had to get rid of some stuff, but totally worth it!

As far as sustainability goes, there is another problem. Some time people get windfalls of money and mistakenly think they can now afford to make an upgrade. They fail to consider that it's only temporary and they dig a hole for themselves that they can't get out of.

I disagree with one point you made: Downgrading Back. About 7 years ago, my old dishwasher(19 yrs old) started leaking water at the last cycle, in the front. Nothing major, cause I would mop it right up. I decided to upgrade to a new washer, with all the bells and whistles that gave me problems within three months of ownership, but it was covered under warranty. About 9 months ago, it stoped draining. So now,I am looking for the simplest model I can get, regardless of the options. I also live in a 1500 sq ft home, and now I wish I had stayed in my smaller townhouse. When you reflect on the amount of work it takes to maintain things you upgrade to, you realize that many times you downgrade your personal life and time. Maintaining an 1100 sq ft home with a small backyard, is a lot easier than maintaining a 1500 sq ft home with a third of an acre backyard. Basic living is a lot better than complex. Specially when you find out that time is the only asset that doesn't come and go,

Appliances are made to break now not like they used to be which was made to last for several decades. Very sad!

You made some great points today which I hope you will reiterate from time to time to help us to remember. One thing I find is that when I decide to upgrade something after a long period of frugality the pleasure of this upgrade is so enjoyable that I want to get more of it and find myself wanting to upgrade more and more. I guess it is something to do with dopamine, although it can also be because the upgrade, for example a new couch, makes other things look tired, dated and not up to the same standard. Frugality seems to involve finding a sweet spot between having a scarcity mindset and becoming a spendthrift.

Apropos of upgrades, it's important to recognize that if you're swapping an older version of something for something new (e.g., car, fridge, washing machine), the new version may not last as long due to the "crapification" of so many manufactured items. So sure, you're upgrading on the surface, but there may be unexpected headaches involved. This is why my fridge is older than you, Austin: it works and any replacement is unlikely to last another 30+ years. (Also, the new version is apt to be more technologically complicated and more expensive to repair, if it's repairable at all.) I've experienced this is in so many areas -- clothes, toaster ovens, computers -- that it's important to include in any upgrading-related decisions. Excellent video as always, Austin!

All so very true. Until you reach the point were a) all the things/machines start breaking down but that small replacement part is no longer available on the market, the old other things/machines in this world are equally breaking, ink for this particular printer is no longer available, or the elderly user is stuck in older technology while life around demands new apps that no longer fit into the older technology or use of fingers, eyes etc is getting restricted. They could easily continue in the 1990s or 2000s but no longer in the present...

I have no interest in an I phone that can do the same thing my phone can do. Im older and becoming set in my ways so upgrading is not really much of an interest for me.

With vehicles and many other things, if you get a stripped down version rather then one with the whistles and bells or amenities most people are getting. It will depreciate faster, and it won't end up being a good financial decision, unless you keep it till it's junkyard material.

Hello Austin. Are you aware that your content is most interesting for people over 60? Because as a pensioneer the monthly income is less then during the working process and a downgrade is necessary. So far I am not a pensioneer but I value your advice and see that I get free of stuff that I don't need. So 10 years from now I would like to be prepared for my life as a pensioneer. Then I will have all I need in good quality. Thanks. Satoshi

I tend to keep things until they die but I am now faced with needing to upgrade my bathromm and kitchen. Both are 25 years old and leaving them for much longer is going to result in an emergency spend, instead of a considered expense.

My kitchen was 100 years old. There were 3 upper cupboards and 2 lower cupboards. Storage, even for a minimalist, was next to impossible. I ended up storing half my kitchen supplies in the dining room which is now my kitchen and my old kitchen is now my dining room. I feel your need.

Austin, have you done a video about dating? how someone frugal like you dates? I went out once with a guy who invited me a coffee and did not pay for it. I do not like going on dinner dates because I don't want a stranger to pay for my dinner but when he won't pay for a coffee, he should not be dating.

Recently I wanted to upgrade my driver golf club. A new driver cost $650.. A demo club that is the same model was $337.. Guess which club I bought. I feel that’s “a lot of bang for my buck”. After playing with this demo club the results are excellent. I once bought a new putter for a high price thinking this will improve my performance. I didn’t . Spending big does not guarantee increased skill level. Spending big increased my expectations.

Austin what is your thoughts on van life or leaving in a car? I see a lot of people doing that to save money.

I think if you're doing a road trip for a short period it would be fun, but at the end of the day you need space, running water, and a permanent location. To me it seems more like a cool video idea than something cool in reality.

So, did you get an apartment in an independent house? Maybe there is a little yard for the tenants (and Star)? P.S. Dig that lamp!

Yeah, it's an independent house. I like the small feel to it where I have the landlord's number and don't have tons of neighbors. I try to avoid as much corporate stuff in my life, haha. There's some outdoor area, but I'm close to a big park so been hitting that up everyday. I really enjoy going for walks.

Great advice ❤❤ Hola from Queretaro, QRO. Mexico Move to Mexico for a less expensive life. Why complain, when you can move where you can afford. RIP if you stay. 😂 Live a moral life. Do not take you phone out, but fentanyl infected phone. Fake money, and drugs. You can stop these invaders once they step out of their country. But greed and corruption is why they are here. Grow a set! ❤❤❤ Just do it .

In your video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-g4wlajnLxYs.htmlsi=cQnaz7oY4KiQ-zfU , you explain that your average income was $3200/month but then on this video you said when you upgraded your apartment from $700 to $1400/month apartment that you asked yourself is this a third of your income. A third of the 3200/month income is $1,066/month. So by your advicr you are living $384 above a third of your income in rent. We come to people for advice as we are struggling with real numbers looking for accurate advice.
