I made a sustainable decision recently and I'm so proud of what I did. My best friend is getting married this fall and originally canceled her wedding during quarantine. In June, she told her bridal party that the wedding was back on and told her bridesmaids what color dresses to wear. I stressed for hours, whether I should go the easy route and purchase a new dress or find it secondhand. Luckily, this bride is flexible on our dress style and gave us 2 color options. SO instead of purchasing a brand new dress, I searched local second hand boutiques and places like poshmark and thredup! I found one on poshmark for a quarter of the price! Now, I'm getting it drycleaned (it had stains) and hemmed by a professional! I am estactic that I didn't have to buy a brand new dress for a wedding ceremony (and they aren't having a wedding reception). I'm so glad I was patient and searched second hand and saved so much money!

I found my dress for my sisters wedding too second hand! There are already plenty pretty dresses out there 🤗 As a great side effect it was much cheaper, even with the tailoring costs because the sleeves were a little bit to long. ♡

@@Daphnaee Who else wears bridesmaid dresses more than once because brides have different colors and ideas for what they want. I'm so glad this one was flexible! After wearing it, I plan on donating to a local dress shop that donates profits to local teen programs. It's very likely someone else will need this color dress for a wedding or event sometime soon!

Since covid I don’t go any place other then work , so I wash my scrubs once a week and I do have to wash them in heat to make sure it kills any potential covid19 that might be on me , I shower when I come home and put on my pjs , so I do regular laundry maybe every 3 weeks before covid if I wasn’t dealing with any flu patients I could wear my scrubs 3 times before washing or unless I did flu clinic shots , ewww I felt so gross after giving shots so those scrubs are washed right away

I live in a small village in Finland, dryers are considered kind of a luxury here too. Usually only large families or very busy people have dryers, I have one but it broke last week actually so unless it can be fixed I will start hang drying all my clothes. And dryers are definitely hard on your clothes, especially things like bras, things with lace, buttons and other delicate pieces easily break or get misshapen when put in a dryer.

Eco-minimalism when done in a non-instagram perfect aesthetic way IS CHEAPER 🥰 I'm moving into an apartment for the first time ever and put the call out for my buddies to clean up their unwanted household clutter. Almost everything in my apartment is 2nd hand, and I just picked it all up from their driveways and donated what I didn't need out of the piles (I told them of this plan before they decluttered), and collected the little tax return receipts for them. My apartment is gonna be cute - a lot of the stuff is actually vintage from the 60s and 70s! 🙃

Shelbi: "do you wash your jeans after you wear them once?" me: *trying to remember when was the last time I washed my jeans* but seriously, I just usually check bigger clothes for stains and sniff them to see if they're smelly, if they're not, it's all good :D or sometimes if I'm staying home I wear sweaty clothes (because it's 35 degrees celsius in here and anything fresh will be sweaty in 15 min anyway). Underwear and socks are an exception of course P.S. for hang drying, you can just get any thicker rope and tie it in your balcony or bathroom or wherever you have space for this if you don't want to buy a rack, does not look so pretty but gets the job done

I find jeans get... greasy after ... whatever time. Which I guess is solved by the freezer hack. But our freezer is small and full of food. So washing it is. Like twice a year.

Same. I change underwear and socks everyday. Anything that touches my armpits gets the sniff test and things like bottoms and outerwear just get washed when they have a stain. It might sound gross but it must have saved me a fortune in money, time and effort and helped the environment. Also I wash everything at 30° on 'eco time' with soap nuts and dry it on a drying rack/clothes horse.

I have four pairs of jeans, most bought second hand. I cycle through these and wash them when there are marks on them or they stink. Hang to dry and cycling them means they each get less ware and tare over time. I need to mend the inside leg on a couple of pairs I otherwise can't ware but I do my best to make my jeans last.

During COVID, I’ve been getting into Dumpster Diving. It’s practically a free hobby, and I’ve been able to donate literally HUNDREDS of pounds of sealed food and I have only spent $3.12 in a grocery store since May. I’ve also rescued returned items (air fryer, coffee maker, coffee percolator, hair dryer, perfect condition makeup palettes, sealed Gucci perfume, and more) and given them as gifts or used them myself. It’s a great way to reduce waste that goes to the landfill and I’ve saved SO much money. I have found that a reduced-waste lifestyle is actually a huge money saver for me, which is what drew me to the lifestyle in the first place. Thanks for another great video!
@NivionScribble

Unfortunately, dumpster diving is a crime in several countries. :( It should be a crime to toss away perfectly good items instead of donating them.
@bethc8809
@bethc8809 4 года назад
Yes, always check your local ordinances before the dive. If possible take a buddy in case you have an accident. Wear protective gear - I saw a video of a woman diving in flip flops 😱. Take a cooler with you, take old grocery bags with you - sometimes stores toss a 6 pack of juice because 1 item inside busted, you don't want that stickiness touching your vehicle before you can clean it at home. Take an old sterilite bin with lid - you don't want lightweight items blowing away out the back of your truck. BE SAFE!
@LilyAurora9
@LilyAurora9 4 года назад
@@NivionScribble Yeah some stores are so evil about it too :( I knew someone who worked at a Halloween store and they had to physically destroy (like cut up the clothes) anything they threw away at the end of the season because they didn't want people to dumpster dive it for free. How crazy is that? They're losing money/product either way...

I love this video idea and how you approach the (perceived) privilege of living more sustainably. When I was younger, I thought the mantra "reduce, reuse, recycle" were 3 things that were equally important to help protect the environment lol. It wasn't until high school that I realized it was actually listed in the order you were supposed to attempt them (oops). Anyway, kids, reduce > reuse > recycle.

Sort of a "swap" for yarn crafters: You can make T-shirt yarn out of old T-shirts or other clothing items. This is good to keep you from buying new yarn and to keep old textiles out of landfills! Though the yarn is different from normal yarn and won't be appropriate for every craft, it has a ton of uses. I use it to make plant hangers and potholders. People make very sturdy baskets out of it often. There are tons of youtube videos showing how to make it, and it is pretty easy!

I noticed that you mentioned the library and I know that a lot of them have like dvds and blue rays available and like dvds of tv series. I feel like there may not be a lot of people who still collect dvds or blu rays but I have seen large collections. Those physical dvds obviously cost money and energy to produce and ship (if you’re getting them on amazon, which a lot of people I know do) Instead of buying every movie I want to see, I just go to the library and see if they have it available, check it out and take it home for a bit. There’s also like this super cool program that people who aren’t a library junkie don’t know about called ‘holds’. If something is available at another library in your public library network, u can place it on hold and they’ll ship it from the library where they have it available to your closest library u for either free or next to nothing! That saves waste and money from not having to produce as many dvds (cuz libraries are a shared communal resource) and having it ship a shorter distance (using less energy and gross gases in the process)

that's so important too, we saw that during lockdown the world's emissions only dropped by about 17% because the majority of our emissions are the kind of thing that only widespread, large-scale changes like government regulations can affect. which is why it's great that shelbi mentioned voting, and getting politically active which is really important too, if you can. while voter suppression is a huge problem in the US, we have to recognise how lucky we are to be able to vote.

Yes! Another low cost/free thing would be cooking from home. I have friends that ask "how do I reduce my waste?" And basically eat delivery for every meal. Like... a lot of waste would be reduced, even if you didnt shop super eco friendly, if you just cooked from home? And didnt have like 3 or 4 packages 3 times daily from door dash? Idk how they afford it. But it would certainly be cheaper too

It's crazy to me that there are places where recycling isn't the norm, even though I know that other european countries also seem to be lacking in this regard. Here in Germany every house collects trash separated (packaging, paper, regular trash that doesn't fit into other categories, (+some also collect everything that ist compostable)), there are glass collecting containers in every neighborhood, containers to collect batteries and lightbulbs in every supermarket and drugstore, and free stations where you can bring your compost and other bigger items. There ist also a huge system for bottles (plastic and glass), where you pay a little deposit for each bottle, that you get back when you return it to any store (Bonuspoint, even though widely debated, is that a lot of people can help themselves financially by collecting bottles that others were to lazy or didn't want to bring back themselves.) Recycling bins with four separate bins for glass, paper, packaging and general trash are also widely available in every city and in every trainstation (atleast that I have been to). Not saying that Germany is perfect at recycling and sustainibility in general, we still have a long way to go, but these measures have been in place for +20 years (my entire life) and I couldn't imagine it any other way. (Please excuse any errors, english is not my first language and my german autocorrect keeps trying to interfere)
@LilyAurora9
@LilyAurora9 4 года назад
That's amazing! Here in US, Colorado and a lot of other states it's mostly up to the individual - pay extra for recycling service through the trash, or save your recycling and drop it off yourself at a facility. Some grocery stores have bins to take back their plastic bags, and occasionally there's a city event to take in chemicals, batteries, etc (the hard stuff). If you live in an apartment like many of us there is ZERO recycling offered, I have to save mine and drop it off, and there's no where to take compost and I don't have a yard :( Crazy. I'd love to visit and see how they do things over there.

I only wash clothes if I sweat a lot in them and/or they stink really bad, tbh. hahaha But that might be a mixture of laziness and trying to be sustainable. hahah and I hang dry most of my things. Also, a lot of cities have a rent-a-bike service so you don't necessarily need to own a bike to bike places. haha (I used them a lot when I was living in Chicago and now while I am studying abroad in Taipei I use them too.)

These videos make me feel so much better 😂 the things that my boyfriend says I do because I’m “tight” ( don’t want to spend money ) are actually good for the planet Iv always reused packaging because I always was just excited that I could use that as something else for free 😂 turns out Iv been helping save the planet all these years. That’s going to be my new excuse to why I’m doing it. Also Scotland is so strict about recycling it seems compared to America. In my council we have a total of 6 bins that are collected for different waste. Landfill , plastics & cans , paper & card , garden waste , food waste , glass & small electronics. 🙈 it’s a lot of bins but they literally won’t lift your rubbish if you don’t fill your bins right ( yes they check, as only landfill bin can have waste in a rubbish bag which only gets emptied once a month. ) And air drying clothing is just the norm here 🤷🏻‍♀️

A couple sustainable things people might not have thought of When you go somewhere like a waterpark or amusement park make sure you don’t forget or leave anything there, yes we do have lost and found but a majority of stuff ends up thrown away. Also if you are looking to reduce your waste slightly save extra ketchup/ranch/etc packets you might receive and use them at places like that too as often the containers used for ketchup and sauce have the most plastic of any serving container(compared to cardboard boxes, paper cups, etc) sincerely someone who works at a waterpark :)

I'm lucky enough to go to a college that encourages making environmentally conscious decisions, so there are bins for trash, recycling, AND compost in the main buildings. All of the take-away containers from the cafeteria are also compostable, and I believe the coffee cups are, as well. All of the compost goes to the campus farm, which is where a lot of our food is sourced from, and they try to stay as local as possible with the rest of it, as well. They really try to make the campus as zero waste as possible, which I really love. I truly wish every college had the means to be able to do these things!

I was so proud of my son, who is 9. His friends all want (or have) hydro flasks. He has a klean kanteen. When some of the kids were teasing him bc he didn’t have the “cool name brand” of water bottle 🙄, he said that’s stupid. They both carry water without using plastic and both keep things cold, why buy a new one?! I was so proud.

I've never heard you talk about Ecosia. Just added it to Chrome! I live out in the country, but thankfully, our small town (6600 folks) has a full recycling drop off center. I don't even have a trash can. I only buy items in no packaging or recyclable packaging. I've been doing this for about 5 years. Love your channel~!

I remember reading Marie Kondo's book and thinking, "how the hell am I going to find joy in folding clothes when I have to do it all the time and hate it?!" Now I don't wear my clothes only once before washing and I have found the joy in doing less laundry.

I’d add joining your local Buy Nothing group. That’s saved me tons of money and waste by reusing things other people no longer want, and also give things I no longer want to someone else that will use it. It’s amazing ❤️

Hi Shelby I have just downloaded Ecosia - cannot wait to make use of it. Also thanks for always pushing us to keep doing what we can. I am from South Africa so some of the things you mention are very foreign for me, but I keep on learning and trying to make it relevant to my environment.

I have a junk-mail e-mail, where I ordered many letters from shops and did not cancel them after the initial benefit. I did not think for the longest time that actually it also uses actual energy (electricity) to send those mails to me, to storage those in always existing form AND for me to scroll them through and most of then going to the bin directly. :o So, for the planet: cancel mass-e-mails you don't even want to get!

lol: i watch your US. based Chanel regulary just to find out now about the ecosia App and search Tool. Because their based at my hometown Berlin-Germany :-) the emission foot Print ist neagtiv by 1kg / 2 lbs CO² per search. Because they not just plant trees or use ecofriendly Energy but futhermore they installed in addition new solarpanels on their roof tops. Beside this great fact i find it verry comforting to use this tool for my search now, because of the verry high regulations and european law codes for customer privacy and security! Thank you so much for your helpful tips :-)
