I slice open my toothpaste/lotion tubes when it feels like they are empty. THERE IS ALWAYS SO MUCH PRODUCT LEFT INSIDE!!! If it is something that will dry out w too much air exposure, I scoop the remains in a Tupperware or little canister, and then use it till it’s actually done. (And yes, I know I’m using plastic, but my plan is to use up every drop of everything I have in my home, and then make my sustainable swaps 💪🏼)

@eliseweiland3133
@eliseweiland3133 4 года назад
One tip that I have that’s pretty random is for style! Take the time to find your personal style and fits that flatter you. It will keep you more immune to trends (less fast fashion or new fashion buying overall) and it will also help you when shopping secondhand! If you have heard of the diderot effect you can understand how impactful this could be. It is comprised of two concepts: one, that goods purchased by a consumer will be cohesive with their identity and be complementary with each other and two, that if you buy something outside of that core identity, there will be additional purchases of complementary goods that can result in a consumption spiral. Therefore, taking the time to learn what types of things your true self appreciates should actually result in less items purchased and less environmental resources used! As much as I would like to be anti-consumer, understanding the system we live in and working within its rules to reduce consumption can be a really useful tool :)

1-When my foam soap is empty I put 1/4 of an inch of dish soap in it and fill the rest up with water. Don't shake it! 2- I put just enough fabric softener in the measureing cup to so I can't see the bottom. 3- I run a space heater during the day so my house heater isn't using oil to run. We save a good $800.00 on oil doing this. 4- I keep a list of things that need doing and try to only go do errands once a week. This helps me to not buy things on a fly. 5- I brush my teeth with toothpaste in the morning and oil pull with coconut oil after and brush when I spit it out. I save money on toothpaste as well as I get the big jug of coconut oil so my toothpaste last longer. 6- I put plastic on my windows and back door and a blanket is layed at the bottom on my front door to help with the draft. Not sure how good all of this is for the environment but it has helped me save money.

Walking off trails is one of my biggest pet peeves! I was in Venture Crew and Boy Scouts as an adult leader from age 17 to 21 and one of the courses I took was Leave No Trace. So I have a big issue with things to do with enjoying the outdoors. Don't leave your trash, pick up trash you see, don't pick flowers or take things from the environment (if it's not trash), and stay on the dang path! I just saw the Lyft thing the other day when I took one to work (it was raining and I couldn't ride my bike) and it had a banner saying it was carbon neutral. Also, Lyft is typically cheaper than Uber anyway.

We fill a 5 gallon bucket to bath with and any leftover we use to manually flush our toilet. We only flush our toilet 2x a day since the internal flusher mechanics broke years ago. And as a cashier at a grocery store PLEASE don't leave refridgerated/frozen stuff out to thaw or spoil!! Give it to a cashier or even just stick it back into a fridgerated or freezer where someone can reshop it to where its suppose to go. All the spoiled food has to be thrown away and more resources have to be used to make new stuff. Back in the 1930s they used what were called straw boxes/hot boxes which are boxes stuffed with straw and blankets and once your roast or food cooking is at a full boil, you put the covered cooking container into the box, cover with straw and a pillow and its insulated and that residual heat would cook the meal over the hours. Check out Wartime Farms video series with Ruth Goodman. I couldn't find a clip of that but its a good series to watch.

When you go out to a restaurant order your drinks without ice (less energy), no lemon wedge, and no straw. 👌🏼
@breeski3903
@breeski3903 4 года назад
As a waitress and previous restaurant manager... those tips save no energy lol. The ice machines are constantly making ice and anything unused just gets melted and drained. Any lemon wedges that go bad just get tossed. Restaurants will order the same amount of lemons every time, as they usually come in big boxes.
@leighakymberlynn2264
@leighakymberlynn2264 4 года назад
@@breeski3903 no ice means no wasted water, not necessarily less energy. No straw is an obvious one. Plus, if more people ask for less lemons, we prep and order less lemons. Have worked in restaurants basically since I was able to have a job :) you ARE able to order a bag of lemons, rather than a box. I live in a tourist town. We order boxes of lemons in the summer, and in the winter we order smaller boxes! Less demand means less lemons!

Have you ever thought of making a series for kids? I’m a teacher and I take many of the science behind your videos back to my kiddos in school, but I think it would be awesome for them to see someone who’s young like you who is passionate about the environment and a RU-vid influencer. So many of my kids say they want to be a RU-vidr when they grow up! Ha ha in ten years of teaching they’ve gone from doctor to rap star and now onto RU-vidr. Anyways there’s a book called “50 Simple Things Kids Can Do to Save the Earth.” I think people would find them useful when talking to their kids about being more sustainable and WHY.

Random thing I do to cut waste is if I finish a loaf of bread that has a lot of seeds (like Dave's killer bread) I save all the left over seeds from the bag in a container and recycle the bag, and then use the seeds as bird feed. Just a small thing to cut wasted food, and yes I am looking into baking my own bread to cut the plastic but this is what I do for now.

My energy reduction hack for the coffee maker: As soon as the pot is brewed, I turn off the burner and pour the coffee into a thermal carafe. This keeps it hot til hubby wakes up (we have different schedules). We used to leave the burner on, and then he'd have to turn it on for a second cycle (almost 4 hrs, gulp!) but now, it's only on for 15 minutes. That's a lot of savings when we drink coffee every day!

Love your neurotic thoughts! So I love that you mentioned to pay attention where you walk. This is like 10x more important when using hiking and nature trails in parks and reserves! These native plants need to be left alone plus the erosion creates disturbance which makes it easier for invasive weeds to take hold and wreck the ecosystem. Plus it creates wider borders which effects the environment as well. So pay attention to the signs and stay on trails! People maintain these trails for a reason. Watch where you step and imagine what would happen if 100 other ppl went the same way.

Another thing I don't do is preheat the oven, and if I have to, I make sure to roast nuts or cook something else in the oven while it's getting to temperature. Another thing I do is turn off the heat when I'm cooking. Our place is small enough that we don't actually need both the heat and the stovetop/oven on.

The left turn and right turn tip was interesting, never even thought about it. A few random things we like to do at home: one step more than mellow yellow, we keep a tub in the sink and one in the shower to collect water to flush the toilets! We also keep a tub in our sink to collect the less soapy water used to wash dishes and water used to wash veggies and rice to water our plants. And my mom usually keeps the leftover coffee grinds and egg shells and makes her own fertilizer :)
