We thought we brought home a nice calm puppy like our first Swissy, but after worming him, he developed the energy level of a Jack Russel. Steals only my socks and shoes, goes bananas when he hears the car keys jingle, has highly developed selective hearing. Devourers his food like Cookie Monster and walks away from his water bowl like a Moose eating water plants. Has phenomenal eye sight, and rattles windows barking at dogs a quarter mile away. He's a big goof ball and we wouldn't trade him for the world.

It sounds like you've got quite the character in your hands with your Greater Swiss Mountain Dog! It's fascinating how individual personalities can vary even within the same breed. The sudden burst of energy post-worming is interesting, and it's amusing how he's taken a liking to stealing socks and shoes. The enthusiasm for car keys and the selective hearing are classic dog traits, and it's heartwarming that despite these quirks, you wouldn't trade him for anything. It's clear he brings a lot of joy and laughter to your life with his goofball antics. Dogs truly have a unique way of becoming cherished members of the family!

I agree - my Greater Swiss Mountain Dog who was adopted from the kennel two years ago (didn't know how to play, bark, swim, groom himself). This has become an adorable riffraff, tender and playful, but brutal and timid

We had our swissy for 11 1/2 years, and he was a beautiful unique wonderful member of our family. Contrary to your video, he was not high energy!

We had a Swissy when my daughter was really young. It was the best decision we ever made. The dog played a huge role in her growing up.

Mom had 2 Swissies! Neither was “high energy.” I would not call either a watch dog. Never saw one drool! One loved water the other hated water. One was a hospital therapy dog. Both were very gentle except when young and playing.

What wonderful Swissies your mom had! It's interesting how each had its own quirks, from energy levels to water preferences. The fact that one became a hospital therapy dog highlights their gentle nature. Thanks for sharing these charming stories! 🐾❤

It's the complete opposite of mine, an energetic pile that doesn't allow anyone to enter and is dissuasive, even violent when anyone approaches me.

They are great dogs but shed a lot!! 4x a year due to weather changes. And, they bark a lot and very loud. They do not like to be alone, or left outside. I love my Swissy, best breed I've had but be very much informed before u get one. And also they are the messy eaters

My swissy does bark a good bit and loud. She is a messy drinker.. She doesn't shed that bad. It's been a good 13 years and she still is pretty healthy and moves around decently. Stairs are tough so we block them (she loved stairs when she was younger). She has some incontinence and rear legs have lost some muscle.. Her eyesight isn't great anymore either. She still plays and is still sweet 13 years later.. Here is to many more!

I am thinking of the GSMD. I have had a BMD before and I love that breed but I wanted a short haired version and one with a slightly better health record although my berner lived 9.5 years. Am I way off base here ?

Mine is very sweet. He is protective. At the same time he loves everyone. More a deterrent being a big boy. Lots of work. He needs his walks and play time. He took a bit to train. Says they don’t mature until 18 months and that is true. Great as a family dog but he is a huge goof ball that is a gentle giant.

Your Swissy sounds like an absolute delight! It's wonderful to hear about his sweet and protective nature, making him a fantastic deterrent with that big-boy presence. The fact that he loves everyone and is a gentle giant showcases the breed's incredible temperament. The training journey and the insight about maturity at 18 months resonate with the Swiss Mountain Dog's characteristics. Wishing you many more joyful moments with your lovable goofball! 🐾❤

It would be interesting if it would also have a physical reaction if there is a malevolent man. I wonder if he reacts against those who want to hurt you

Swissy are known to bark and put on a big show to intruders but don’t tend to attack like their close relative the Rottweiler.

My Swissy doesn't like any other males except husband and father in law..if vet doctor is man..he can't even touch him..He doesn't have any problems with females and I see that my Swissy think that probably he's only one😅😂
