I've had my ball python for a few weeks now and he's a sweetheart. It took a bit of experimentation to get his temp/humidty stable, but he's a very happy and calm snake now. They're dead easy to look after once they're set up properly. Also, they're very cute, like you said! Great vid.

"Sweetheart" "cute" "adorable"... I don't know, I just can't fathom attributing words like that to a predatory creature driven entirely by ancient, primal instincts in which the only reason you're not on its menu is because you're not the right size. There's really only a few thoughts that go through a snake's mind: threat, non-threat, hungry, not hungry, warm, cold, edible, non-edible. Beyond that, there's just nobody home in there.

Ball pythons can be picky eaters. Some people can never get their snakes to frozen/thawed rodents. Not exactly a deal breaker, but live is more expensive and inconvenient than having some f/t ones in the freezer (unless you have a feeder colony). So it could be deemed a 'negative' trait compared to other snakes. Anyhow, ball pythons are cute and easy to handle. :3
@GoHerping
@GoHerping 8 лет назад
Yeah that's true. Luckily the positives outweigh the downsides :)
@colinjava8447
@colinjava8447 8 лет назад
Yes that's more or less the only downside with them. Its frustrating when they don't eat for months, which mine tends to now over winter and spring. I think blood pythons are a good snake too, but they can be nippy whereas ball pythons aren't.

Alex Po it won't be easy but start off by showing him snake videos with people who are young. Like this kid (no offense), show him children holding snakes and then explain how cheaply they can be maintained. Prove to them that it won't be easy to escape and if it does it'll probably hurt the snake (away from immediate essentials) more than anything else.

Thing about caging: I've heard ball pythons actually do *better* in small-ish enclosures than ones bigger than they need to be, rather than bigger making no bad difference like it would for, say, a corn snake. So, I'm concerned; if I'm getting a baby ball python, would it overstress her or anything else to put her in an adult's tank? I'm hoping to save a decent amount of money, and buying a 'nursery' tank that she wouldn't use after growing to a certain size seems like a waste if I can avoid it. If so, what are some budget-friendly alternatives to keep her in until she gets big enough for her main tank? Should there be a difference in positioning of the hides, water bowl, etc? EDIT: Just watched your updated python care guide thing. Answered alot of questions, including most of these. So, basically, nevermind for the most part.

Hey there! So I do have sort of a question... I'm mainly just looking for advice because I've been doing a hella amount of research about ball pythons and I think I could convince my parents that they're nice. So, let's kick off some reasons why they don't want a snake. Mostly, I believe it is just the idea of owning a snake and they see that as a negative thing. We do have quite a lot of cats but like they're all super mellow. My mom is worried of the idea that the cats would try to interact with the snake somehow (yeah, logic) and yeah. I know there's videos that debunk this whole thing and fear of snakes but nothing seems to work with my parents. ps, I'd be paying all the expenses for the snake and the snake itself.
@StainedBrain
@StainedBrain 6 лет назад
Ugh my mom is the same way. I was gonna get a gecko for my birthday last year, I was gonna pay for it and keep it in my room and everything. She said I can't have any pets besides fish. She doesn't even go into my room that often. She won't even see them, unless I want to handle them around the house. She doesn't like pets that much. But we have a cat, a dog, and 40 fish so she just has to deal with them. Back to snakes, she thinks they'll poison me and eat my future children. I want a ball python, or a gecko, or a bird, or my own dog, a rabbit or two, or cat. (Not too many animals at once). We also might be moving soon, to a bigger house, and I'm gonna probably buy my first reptile then. My sister and I are always like "What if we brought home a cat. What if we just brought home a dog right now." Like we really want another animal.

@markchinguz4401
@markchinguz4401 7 лет назад
Ash Hargis most snakes don't ever bite unless you try to provoke it. Ball pythons in particular are extremely calm and don't bite. The only thing you should pay attention to is the stress level and the way you approach the snake.
@ribbonoosehood6597
@ribbonoosehood6597 7 лет назад
Most beginner snakes don't bite often unless you provoke it. Corn snake bites are often very quick and nippy, and even if they hold on it won't cause too much damage (personal experience here). Ball pythons I assume have different teeth structure, but they're so calm and slow they won't bite unless you stress the animal out too much
@ExplosivePeeps
@ExplosivePeeps 7 лет назад
Snakes are like any cat or dog, if you provoke them to bite, then yes they will bite. Python's of this breed are extremely placid in nature. If you happen to scare them by accident, the most they will probably do is try to get away from you or musk (poop) on you. Keep in mind you're a lot bigger then they are and they can sense that due to their pits. They go, "Okay he's bigger than me. I can't bite him." But due to their calm nature you really have to try to piss one off in order for it to bite you.

Ball pythons rock! Ours is a constant source of joy. He has invented a game where he sticks its head under my hand and pushes it under my palm. We would never allow ours to go in the grass for fear it might pick up mites, stressful for the snake and the owners. Very nice work on your video. thanks.

I do want a snake as a pet becus I think they are just to cute but I am worried offen to scare it into biting me. Any words of wisdom?
@GoHerping
@GoHerping 7 лет назад
They'll only bite you if you put them in a situation that makes them bite you. Basically, as long as you're careful and calm while handling and doing things in the enclosure, you'll be just fine. While feeding, if you have any scent from it's food on your hands, it may mix up you and the food and might bite you. Just use some snake tongs and keep your hands clear of the snake while feeding. It's also easy to tell when a snake is going to strike out of defense. For example, coiling up into an "S" position means it may strike, hissing, etc. are good things to notice. Even if you are bit, bites from ball pythons or smaller snakes aren't really a big deal and nothing compared to most other pets. I'd rather be bit my one of my snakes than a dog, cat, or even hamster any day lol.

My first (and as of now only) snake lived in one other home for 7 years, had retained eye caps, stuck shed and was severely underweight. The first day I got him I took him out to look him over and he waso friendly , I was amazed, having expected a hissy strikey untamed snake sincehis owner held him a couple times a year. I've had him five months, he's back to great weight, has fully shed twice, the second coming off in only two pieces, has fixed his eye caps and is always so excited to. Out and about. His colors have come in beautifully, going from a dull brown to an almost coppery color, eats great (though he's getting fed 3x more than he used to get. So every three week opposed to every two months.) I know its recommended every the days, but I'm worded about over feeding considering he ins weight so easily

About how long did it take before Sunny got more used to you and stopped being startled? I have a new BP about a year old I got from Craigslist who is super shy- I try to be very slow and gentle with her and avoid her head, but I accidentally startle her. I handle her around daily, except when she's being fed and the couple days thereafter (she eats well). I haven't had her long enough that she has shed for me yet, she shed just before I got her. I put a lot of leaves and hides in her tub so she could feel as protected as possible. She tends to be scared when I take her out, but calms down and starts looking around after holding her a bit (but can still be startled). When I first got her she tended to ball up, but now she mostly just quickly pulls her head back. Thanks!

Ball pythons are great, but Texas rat snakes are my absolute favorite. I live in the middle of nowhere, so it isn't uncommon to see one crossing the road at night. Every time I see one on in the road, I either help it to the other side, or I take it along for the ride lol they are the most docile snakes you'll ever come across. It's amazing really. After just a few minutes of bonding, it's almost like you've known each other for years. I always release them after a few hours, but I never forget them.

Hello, I know this is an old video, but you mentioned feeding and pooping once a week. I have had my Ball for around 4 months now, and I have only ever cleaned up poop one time. she is not bloated or anything around the tail section, also I have cleaned up some small solid chunks of urates, but those were definitely not poop sized or colored. they were small white chunks. those are pretty common, but a big full brown piece of poop has only ever showed up once.

Hi. I am new to the whole "snake as a pet" scene and I have a few questions. I plan on getting a ball python, do you recommend getting one from PetSmart? That is the closest place (that I know of) to get one. I know you can have them shipped in the mail, but I'm a little sceptical about that. Next, do you prefer live feeding over giving them dead mice? My step mom (who has cared for snakes, so she is why I can get a snake) is from England, where it is illegal to live feed. So, is there any benefits for live feeding that dead mice doesn't have? Next, how long did it take for your python (or who ever answers this) to get used to your hand? I am nervous about handling due to their bite (and I am scared of pain). Lastly, do you have a recommended breed? Thank you.
@kittenfish5116
@kittenfish5116 7 лет назад
Ethan Trumbley I wouldn't recommend getting one from pet smart, they come from the reptile equivalent of a puppy mill and tend to be sick, most responsible breeders use over night shipping and don't ship when it's too cold or hot, frozen thawed is safer for your snake, for handling it really depends of the snake on how fast they get used to you, it normally doesn't take that long but it's different for each snake, and I wouldn't worry too much about getting bit from one, as even if they bite you it's not any worse than a paper cut and they're extremely unlikely to bite unless you don't wash your hands after feeding, as for "breed" do you mean morph? With morphs they have the same care as any other ball python except they can be more expensive and have a lot of different patterns and colors.
@SamuelFister
@SamuelFister 8 лет назад
So during the bonding process, how many times have they tagged you? I used to work in a sanctuary with reptiles and got bit a lot by our bigger ones, but if I get a younger one, is there still a period where they strike? I desperately want a Ball Python, but want to make the necessary prep first.
@GoHerping
@GoHerping 8 лет назад
I was never bit :) The only time he ever did bite me was while I was hand-feeding him. I wasn't paying attention and because the scent of mouse was on my hands, he went past the mouse and grabbed my hand instead. He immediately realized it wasn't a mouse and let go, then went for the mouse instead lol. Each ball python is different so you may come across some that are a bit more defensive, however they are generally an extremely docile species. Even when I was bit, there were only a few drops of blood and it healed up in like 2 days.

Hello Alex! I have a few questions if that's okay? 1. Do you need to hold onto the prey after the snake gets it? 2. Do they need more than mice/rats? I've seen some snakes go off mice, superworms and nightcrawlers, but I haven't seen anything about Balls needing anything special. 3. What flooring would you recommend for Ball Pythons? 4. This isn't much of a snake question, but I am dying to know. Do reptiles need to be put into Corentine before they can be in the same building together, similar to birds? I currently own a Fat Tailed Gecko and I would really love to get a ball. 5. I've seen guides say Balls like small habitats (around 20 gallons) while others say they like big ones (40 gallons). What gallon size would you recommend?
@GoHerping
@GoHerping 7 лет назад
1. You can, this basically gives your snake the idea that it's eating live prey so it'll mimic what they do in the wild and constrict a bit tighter so you know that it has a good grip. But if the snake grabs it too quick and pulls it from the tongs/your hands, you don't have to worry since it's not a big deal. 2. Nope, all ball pythons should get food-wise is a mouse or rat about once a week depending on the size of him/her. 3. Some of my favorites are "forest floor bedding", "lizard litter", "aspen snake bedding", "reptile carpet", and even just newspaper or paper towel works fine but you have many other options. Just remember that it's best to avoid sand and walnut shells (both can cause impaction if the snake ingests any and don't use cedar or pine, as they are toxic to many reptiles and amphibians. 4. Some people say you should keep your new animal separate for a few weeks to ensure there are no mites, ticks, etc. that could spread to your other animals. However, I'm bad about this and have never actually done this. (My first snake which happened to be the ball python in this video had a bad case of mites) however, snake mites can't give geckos mites as far as I know. So it's definitely not a bad idea to keep it in a separate room, but I personally haven't. 5. It's true that ball pythons (and most snakes) generally enjoy smaller areas because they can feel more safe and secure. I'd say at the minimum, keep yours in a 20 gallon (like I have mine) and try to avoid anything larger than a 40 gallon. Hope that helps :D

This might be a weird question but how often does a BP poop? Also, how often do you change the bedding?
@GoHerping
@GoHerping 7 лет назад
As often as you feed it. If you're feeding it once a week, it'll poop about once a week. Right now, I'm using paper towel as substrate so I just replace it all each time it gets dirty. If you're using a loose substrate like cypress chips or aspen shavings, etc. you can usually just spot clean, meaning you grab any soiled or wet parts of substrate and add in a little bit more fresh shavings or chips.

Yeah, I try to take all the reptiles I can easily keep up with outside whenever it's warm. I would say it's not much different than a parent taking their kid outside, so there aren't any realistic dangers other than losing them so just keep a close eye lol

When it comes to the water the ball pythons drink should i give them natural spring water or regular tap water?
@GoHerping
@GoHerping 8 лет назад
I think natural spring water sometimes contains things like fluoride that benefit us but can be dangerous to reptiles. What I do is use tap water with Reptisafe drops. You can also fill some clean water jugs with tap water and let it sit for 24 hours. This lets any chlorine or other chemicals evaporate so by the time you give it to your snake, it'll be distilled water. Reptisafe: www.amazon.com/Zoo-Med-ReptiSafe-Water-Conditioner/dp/B0002568SG
