15 Reasons NOT To Move To Hawaii 

Aloha Team, I lived in Puerto Rico for 20 years, and over 30 years in New York City… I moved to Honolulu 2 years ago. My views on this subject… 1. Is definitely NOT hot in Hawaii. By far this place has the most pleasant and stable weather in the world. You’re being a little dramatic Ryan. Try living in Louisiana.😅 2. Great to be far from the mainland… I like the isolation. 3. Because I live in Honolulu and work at Schofield.. traffic is no problem for me 4. Compared to NYC, parking is not an issue in Hawaii. I also own my parking space 5. Culture…. I also grew up in PR, I understand the culture and island life 6. Hawaii culture trumps school education 7. Hawaii is definitely not crowded.. try living in New York City 8. I don’t think I would ever get island fever… this place is too good, great weather and good people. 9. I landed a great and well paid job with the government. Great jobs available to work as DOD Federal civilian. 10. Hawaii is expensive but it wasn’t a shock for me coming from NYC 11. I bought a home in Ward Village - compared to NYC I’m doing better here for living expenses. I’m keeping more money in my pocket. 12. Coming from NYC - I love the slow pace and lay back attitude 13. I haven’t seen much bugs, mosquitoes or roaches here… 14. I am currently serving in the Hawaii Army National Guard - great Soldiers 15. There is lower risk here for natural disasters compared to living in Puerto Rico Moving to Hawaii was the best decision I’ve ever made 🤙 Mahalo

Raised in Hawaii since age 11…am 68 now moved to San Diego. Lived my whole life in Hawaii but could not retire comfortably because we spent all of our money on private school tuition and refinanced several times to make ends meet. I was lucky to have a decent career but at the end of the day it wasn’t enough to save for retirement. My retirement was selling my Kailua house. The drugs esp meth are rampant, high risk for your children to experiment with, healthcare is average at best, public schools are terrible, traffic as bad as the mainland, food cost exorbitant and even the ocean is more polluted now in some areas on Oahu…I was beat up a lot going through the public school system, back in the day, it was traumatic. My only saving grace was I got to surf just about everyday living in Waikiki, esp when I was a kid growing up. That was a privilege that I will be forever grateful for. The slow lifestyle and beauty of the islands is entrancing. But the islands have changed since back in the day and I’m not so sure they are as enticing as they used to be. I feel fortunate to have grown up on Oahu, but now??? Hmmmmmm

Hey, Ryan, many thanks for your tips on Hawaii living. My wife was seriously considering a move there before watching your vid, so you have saved us from considerable stress and anxiety. Seems like a great place for a vacation, but not a permanent residence! Now retired, we've already lived in thirteen houses over our lifetime, so you short circuited number fourteen...making me a happy man! 😅

I was visiting my dad who lived on Nu'Uanu blvd, Honolulu for a few decades and swear everytime I went there was more and more building! Before he passed away he was venting, upset about the plan for the train system. He lived there since 1986 so he was able to experience that beautiful island when it wasn't as built up and populated. So true about culture shock. For people who seldom traveled to foreign countries or only recently started traveling out of their state, the failure to respect the Hawaii culture will create animosity and isolation. The worst thing to say is, "Well, that's not how we do it in.....".

the worst is having a big centipede fall from the ceiling onto your face at night. . if you get stung,. i have several times. .use a needle or razor blade and hit the bite wrea and squeeze out the poison. .wash with warm water cover with fresh aloe vera. .promise the next day no pain or swelling !

I can't afford to even visit Hawaii now, but it is nice to hear about it, and see some of it.

Thanks for this video. I lived on the island of Oahu Island. I lived on Schofield Barracks . What I will say is on occasion there will be very strong Hurricanes . The winds are so strong , they can turn over small planes. Also , some areas get big flying cockroaches .

I'm born, raised and still live in the Bay Area. I just spent a month in Puerto Vallarta, missed the culture of the Bay and the heat and humidity were intense. I had a good time but it feels good to be home breathing that cool, fresh SF Bay air. I've been to Hawaii twice (2 weeks in Kauai and 2 in Maui) and the culture shock is not as much as Mexico (and I'm Mexican American!) and also not as hot and humid as PV.

I’m ready to downsize and live in a smaller, simpler way. I’m tired of the traffic here in San Diego and tired of worrying about wildfires and I don’t want to spend my time doing yard work and housework in this big house I own. I grew up in La Jolla 2 blocks from La Jolla Shores beach so I love the ocean and salt air. I love beach walking. I’m a fit and active senior who is used to walking an hour or more a day and I love to swim. Maybe I can learn to paddle board or kayak in Kailua. I have always loved being outdoors. I also love that Hawaii has a rich and diverse cultural history. Are there many seniors there that come from California to Kailua? I am only concerned about making friends. I would do volunteer work and hopefully meet some friends that way.

Oahu doesn't sound like a paradise to me. Why not live in San Diego which is like 90% Oahu without the headache and heartaches of living on Oahu?

Great video, thanks! The only thing that bothers me about anything you said were the centipedes, people tell me they're less of a problem above 1500' elevation (believable?). A lot of what you mentioned seemed to apply mostly to Oahu, I guess the Big Island where I'm considering has its own distinct drawbacks which I'm also trying to comprehend by both research and just spending time there. I lived in the Caribbean for 12 years so a lot of the tropical stuff seems pretty familiar, except for the volcanos ;-)

Right on, on all points! 2 things you forgot, public transportation THE BUS and the condition of many of the roadways, lots and lots of BIG TIME POT HOLES! While the bus infrastructure iS pretty good you'll always get a good banging from riding the bus, I don't know whether it's from the up keep of the bus's or it's the pot hole riddled road ways, when there last time the bus ride from Waikiki TO Pearl city wore me out, all the time, BANG! BANG!>>>>BANG! BANG! BANG! It was the worst.

The culture shock is real. I didn’t think it would be, as I love to learn about and experience other cultures, but I’ve only lived in areas where my culture was main culture. It was an adjustment to being the minority - it was okay - but an adjustment for sure, and widened my perspective.

I will never forget...I'd once opened up my medicine cabinet in my bathroom when I lived on Maui and there was a scorpion in there. I have no clue how it got there but it freaked me out!

We’re in Florida we’re two weeks away from selling our home. 🙌💕 my boyfriend is a chef/ general restaurant manager he’s been offered several jobs. In Maui and Honolulu. We want to be on Oahu.. but not sure yet? We’re both in the hospitality business in a tourist area. And we own a hobby farm so looking to grow a garden. Where is a good area for a family of 5 ? 3 kids all three school’s. Elementary, middle and high school. And which high schools have the ROTC junior program?

My ex would have major island fever in barely a month living here. Literally gone crazy. He was born and raised on the mainland and never lived on a tiny island. I didn't know there was such a thing until I met him. I get jeolous when I see some ad sales on burgers from BK going for $5 for two whoppers. Here it's $10! Most fast food do not honor the same ads shown on t.v. And don't get me started on NO In and Out here. No Trader Joes. No Kohles. No Ikea. No Harbor Freight. No real subway stations. Sorry I beg to differ on the island time example. If the person missed the green light, I'm honking. It happens to me where I'm not paying attention and I hear a horn behind me. Guess I'm suited for the mainland moreso. Now to sell my tiny house with zero lot for close to a million. Good informational video. Hopefully some rose colored glasses will clear up when people realize you speak the truth to them. They won't make that very expensive transition only to find out island living is not for them. I can't wait to get off the rock myself bc of all ur points.

Most of Hawaii's apartments and houses prices are cheaper than Washington DC. Most apartment rents in Washington DC don't include electricity and gas, and also, in some apartments, the tenants has to also pay the water bill.

If I were living in North Shore near Haleiwa/Wailua and working as an electrician from 5am to 1pm or 6am to 2pm near Aeia or Honolulu, would I be running into much traffic during that commute? or would I probably want to do something like Valet at Turtle Bay for less of a commute? Also, do you know if food delivery like grubhub/uber eats is prevalent or does well on North Shore like it is in Honolulu? Thanks for the vids

One thing I don't think you mentioned about the warm weather is that alot of homes don't have air conditioning. And those that do and don't pay attention to how they run their AC get incredible electric bills.

Las Vegas is hot. Arizona is hot. We almost killed our dog when we were visiting Sedona, AZ a couple years ago because it was way too hot. Cost of living is high because everything has to imported from elsewhere, this is not only applies to Hawaii, it applies to all islands. Thanks for sharing!

I am so ready to finally move out of hawaii! It’s too hot here and it’s not a good place to live for professionals and anyone who is mid age. It’s great for small kids, families, and elderly people, but there is no room for professional, career and personal growth. We also don’t have good healthy foods and food variety- only lunch plates with rice. 95% of our food is shipped from the mainland or other countries such as Japan, Korea, China, and the Philippines. We have no chipotle, ikea, authentic Mexican food, chick-fil-A, and home goods. Traffic is horrendous because you have to plan your time and routes. Most stores have become candy shops tailored to small kids. Teachers here are not placed as a priority and don’t get the pay they deserve. Waikiki is an overrated tourist spot. Everyone is on island time saying “do you want to come back tomorrow?” and expect malls and restaurants to become your main hobby and hangout spots because there is absolutely nothing to do here

I'm sorry about your e perience. It's changed alot since covid. Àlot of people don't want tourist but know that this the islands main income. Also there's alot of anger over housing.locals can't often afford to buy here because so much of the real-estate is bought by mainlanders and foreigners and turned into vacation rentals. There nothing available and what is is outrageously overpriced. A bedroom in a shared house is 1200 to 1600 a month. Alot of the restraunts have also been bought out and since covid the ability to find good workers has gotten even harder. I'm born and raised on the big island, and trust me, it's not you or being Samoan or hapa, it's just all the changes. The older locals are mostly still welcoming but the younger generation has definitely hanve definitely changed. Please don't take it personal 💜 I hope you and your ohana have a great time in maui.

Aloha Ryan! Soo, how much change since '16? I left due to a reason you fortunately haven't had to cover. Health care!!! If you have better than average health insurance and are able to use Pali Momi then you are "close" to the big city average in most of the lower 48. ALL of the reasons you mention, otherwise, almost caused me to laugh. I moved to work in my families business in '07. The increase in traffic commute before I left was roughly three-fold. Fortunately, I come from Hawaiian roots (Japanese, contract workers, 1868) yet still there are places and situations where mainland prejudice is paltry by comparison (I'm Hapa). Milk at Costco is mainland x4. Paradise tax. The government greatly subsidizes employees stationed/transferred here, driving real estate beyond most peoples range. Put an exclamation point on every topic! An hour commute from Kapahulu to Aiea, 12 miles, and medical issues were the breaking point (well, that and the idea my retirement could end up being a pop-up and fishing pole/shopping cart set-up). Best of luck living Aloha, brudda! BTW, while there, I read that if the ports closed, like due to that natural disaster, Oahu store shelves would be empty in 4 days, stock up!

Parking is easy! Just find your spot hours before the sun rises! mmm well… even that may be tricky!

Hope that was for organic milk. $3.49 for a gallon of gas? Wow, that's a steal. How's Hawaii gas so cheap? A gallon in the Bay Area is $6-6.50 per gallon! Home prices sound like Cali coast prices, but the difference is more employment opportunities out here. On Maui people seemed in a hurry, but I enjoyed the chill vibe on Kauai.

Just like Alaska it sounds like. I grew up poor in Alaska. The only good thing was Alaska invests half of their budget into children. Education is huge there so even if you're homeless, if you are a minor the community will throw money at your education. I received tons of field trips, a wonderful art department in high school and if you had a church, Lotta rich people in church so I asked and received a lot. The problem is as a disabled person, when I hit 18 ALL assistance vanished. So I had to leave. Not that I loved Alaska anyway, I'm from Oregon, but it was extremely traumatic having to live on my own as a disabled person. Alaska is a very ableist red state

Lived in Hawaii for 55 years. Married a Chinese Hawaiian girl, surfed, worked a 40 year career. The politics here suck. There’s no solution for a “highest bidder” economy on an island. Tourism and the military fuel everything. Taxes are crazy, crime is as bad as anywhere, and traffic is ridiculous. You make 200k plus, come on down. Otherwise, join the homeless, we got you covered. Aloha Ryan, here's how the 15 reasons affect me ; 1;- HOT, After living in Chicago, I'm tire of the 50- temps. with knee high snow. It will be a welcoming experience. 2;- Being so far is one of the reasons I love it, trying to get away from a lot of people in the mainland, he he he. 3;-Traffic, after living in Chicago, L.A. , New York, piece of cake. 4;- Parking? I'm planning on getting around on skates for starters. 5;- Culture shock? at 65 ?he he he 6;-The education system can't be any worst than Chicago. I sincerely believe that my school days are over at 65, and we are not bringing with us any kids, R U Kidding me ? 7;- Crowded? , I kinda expected this one, is an island, people can only go so far in any direction, kinda like Gilligan's island. 8;-IIsland fever, Oh yeah ! 9;-Employment ? Both my wife and me are retired, I have chosen to go into real estate just to keep me doing something. 10;- Cost of living? Specially after the war in Ukraine, everything's sky high, but, like anywhere else, once you know where to get the best deal. things get a little better. 11;- Housing? The same thing that Russia is doing to the Ukraine right now, the USA did to Hawaii in 1893, is a sad point. 15;- National disasters. I have to mention this, as Dr. David Keanu Sai has mentioned many times, Hawaii being acquired by the USA was like adopting a child, the problem is, they can't find the adoption papers". I noticed that everywhere I have watched news broadcasting in the mainland, they have news about every other state, EXCEPT Hawaii, unless is some- thing major, like an earthquake, the volcano making eruption, otherwise, Hawaii is rarely mentioned. Last year when we were in Honolulu, i remember watching news from Chicago , how the cubs were doing, If I have not known better I would had swore I was in Chicago, but I was looking out the balcony, and seeing Diamond head told me otherwise. We live in Michigan. Our 4 bedroom two bath home with 2/3 of an acre is valued at $150,000. I couldn't afford to move to Hawaii, let alone being too hot for our Siberian Huskies.

Once upon a time paradise. Way exploitation and over crowded oceans, beaches, hikes, water falls…. Way sad.

I am third generation born and raised in Hawaii. I grew up on Oahu when there where no high rises. All those high buildings and the city were built while I was growing up. Bottom line, Colonialism has ruined and stole our culture and Aina (land). Kanaka Maoli have fought through the centuries to continue and preserve their culture, heritage and Aina. So, ALL people NOT born and raised in Hawaii from the U.S. Mainland Continent will never fully understand and be a part of the culture, heritage and Aina, therefore, they will always feel out of place culturally, economically, geographically and geology.

After experiencing being in the mainland..I do not want to live there due to the unfriendly attitude and racism …almost every where…Hawaii has racism too…but I rather live here

The problem I have is that a lot of people like to think Hawaii is a state of America but legally it is not it is actually an independent country an independent sovereign Kingdom

You can go there for just the price of a plane ticket and some food. Just use a homeless shelter and sleep in a tent on the beach. I spent a month here with $700

I will be sending thousands of homeless there soon!
