15 Subtle Differences between Super Mario RPG for SNES and Switch

In the original there is a missable hidden block in the castle. In the remake they added some convenient toads later to reach it, if you fail your first attempt.

I dunno…I kind of liked Princess Toadstool being shown as just a damsel in distress in the intro, as it made it a pleasant surprise when she turns out to be a party member later on in the game. The same can be said about Bowser being revealed to be a party member too.

You forgot that, in the original, the ChainChomps on the chandelier seem to literally be biting on the center of the chandeliers. In the Switch version, they're biting on a bone stuck to the chandelier, the implication being that the only reason they're holding on to the chandeliers is because they want the bone.

Fun fact: The little easter egg in Boosters Castle is still there, but instead of making it something different, it still turns you into the sprite from the first Mario Bros!

I think peach being introduced as a damsel in distress is good because then its a surprise when she becomes a party member. Sure now its no surprising since she's been playable in a bunch of things but at the time it was a nice surprise.

If you want to make a part 2; In the original during battles, the character portraits blink if you don't do a command. now in the remake they dont do it.

I love the toad vest change, it makes Toad the character/ Mario’s friend Toad easier to identify when he’s the only one wearing a blue vest. I wish Nintendo did that more.

In the SNES version if you go into battle, the diamond layout buttons are laid out according to your region's standard so NA got purple and light purple buttons whereas Japanese got color buttons, in the remake the diamond layout buttons in battle just used the color buttons instead.

One thing you should have mentioned is that they fixed the typo with the item "Heal Shell", which is now properly spelled "Heel Shell". So many people were confused in the original as to why Bowser's armor didn't do what its name suggested and didn't heal him.

2:35 In Japanese they have always been called Shanderiwan (Shanderia + Wanwan), it’s interesting that this time they emulated it in the English version. Chaindelier is a fun name!

I know the implication is that Peach was a damsel because of sexism and whatnot, but I think they did that to try to keep her inclusion in battles as a surprise. I was too poor back then to keep up with next gen systems like the Super Nintendo, but I imagine they were like "Yeah, so you make a team of Mario characters and new characters to save Peach and find the mysterious stars". They didn't want to give away that Bowser and Peach join you since that's kinda cool (I don't think Peach ever knew how to fight yet in other games, and obviously Bowser would never join your team as any Mario fan knows). So they did it that way by making her still look like the end goal (rescuing her). But since everyone who is interested in this game probably already knows she and Bowser join you, there was no "harm" in showing her fighting (especially since we have Peach fighting in Smash and Princess Peach).

Its awesome how they stayed faithful to the original designs despite the higher graphic hardware they could have used.

I know one of the bigger changes is in the Forest Maze, where they moved the narrow strip with the save block right before Bowyer. It looks like they also made it where when your party wipes, you don't retain any Exp. since your last save, making you unable to exploit leveling up with starmans.

I'm glad that their pun game got better over the last few decades.

I'm playing both games simultaneously and the funny thing is that despite the change in 6:39 , in the SNES version I went to the vault and got the items, while on the Switch I got distracted talking to a friend and only got the items when I returned to the castle later.

Mario's PipeHouse is where Peach goes to get piped.

I don't like how the intro "spoils" the fact that peach and bowser become party members

1:15 I think Peach was presented differently on the SNES because it was a bit of a secret that her (and Bowser!) were even going to be playable characters at all. All of the battle scenes in the intro just had Mario, Mallow, and Geno. Never Bowser or Peach. Of course, by now, that detail can't be kept secret!

I want to know if Mario is laying down the Pipe in the PipeHouse.

The Mole girl in Moleville doesn't seem to get off the bucket anymore when you give her a carbo cookie, so it seems there may be no way to warp to Midas River using her bucket anymore.

I'll be honest. It still throws me off that that they changed Princess Toadstool to Princess Peach in this game. Because it was one of the last games that they used Princess Toadstool as her name. And having played the original a lot on the SNES I got used to her classic name in the game.

A change that I hadn't seen talked about -- the way to get to the casino has been tweaked. In the original, you had to jump three times in that pipe area to show the path, but there was no confirmation sound, so it was extremely difficult to find. However, in the Switch version there's a chime that's played that clues you in.

It was great for the remake to have actual cut scenes, unlike the original version.

I don't know why, but some of those dialogue changes, no matter how small, feel just a little less magical. "Attack the chain" rather than "aim for the chain" loses that little near-rhyme, "he knows about Action Commands" isn't as funny-sounding as "he knows about timed hits"... it's probably just my bias for the original, but I still miss them. Out of curiosity, is that first hidden item you need to jump on Toad for still missable?

Since Mario is tiny it makes sense that he’s not named Super Mario

I may be crazy but I feel like several sound effects from Mario’s pantomime are missing. Like in the original i am pretty sure there was a sound effect when he shook his head “yes” and he made growling noises when he was playing with Gaz using the Bowser doll. Not huge omissions, but they added charm to the silent protagonist trope.

Underrated channel

I noticed a lot of name changes, like the first boss was Mack in the original and Claymorton on switch. Or Mallow has the move Psychopath changed to Thought Peek.

2 griped with the remake: One is the remake made an already easy game even easier And 2, this is more of a nitpick but I really wish Nintendo would let their game’s have a unique presentation. All of their games have adopted that minimalistic font and user interface design.

The worst change in my opinion was renaming "Frogfucious" into "Frog Sage". It was obviously a political choice and if you're going to do that, then at least come up with another creative name instead of "placeholder name Alpha XX-5" which is what it felt like. I kept thinking I was doing something wrong and returning him his pie or doing something else would actually name him. The Bruce Lee joke removal I also don't understand, maybe it's to do with marketing rights.

So with the name changes, is it now "Found Peach's ???"

Man, sometimes I feel like Martinet was the last one actually calling him 'Super Mario.' like that's kind of important as a character name. for one thing, you can't trademark Mario. 1:15 aaand i'm done caring about this game. god i miss being able to not be pissed off at all times.

Spoiler Alert In the SNES version, the boss you fight in the Mushroom Kingdom is named Mack and the boss you fight in Seaside Town is called Yaridovich In the remake, Mack is now known as Claymorton while Yaridovich is now known as Speardovich. .....for some reason.

And these are just from the start of the game , this has the making of several parts.

this is how Remakes should be done. minor changes and still keeping what made the game so amazing intact. Nintendo outdone them self with this one, i hope they do this for other classic games. (in fact i am also hoping they will finally make a sequel to this series, there is so much potential with this story telling and game play.)

I never played the SNES version because I thought it would be too difficult to understand like Mario is Missing. So I just played Paper Mario on the GameCube instead.

the reason that they call her princess toadstool in the snes version is because the game came out before her name was changed to princess peach and nobody calls mario super mario anymore not for a long time, also nobody calls bowser king bowser except his minions and the only people that refer to peach as the princess are the toads that serve her

In the remake, you can still press Down on the control stick or the D Pad to enter a pipe.

I really love the upgraded version but the original seems just a tad funnier maybe because of the limited movements and facial details.

I like the remake. Hopefully this game made good sale so we can potentially get either a sequel or remake of the Mario and Luigi series.

The second item about peach, the only thing that changed was the opening credits. After that you just show normal stuff from the game that didnt change. Unless I missed something.

They got rid of pop culture references in the game for sure. No more mention of Bruce Lee during the segment when Mario was about to fight Bowyer. And Frogfucious was changed to Frog Sage.

It was until Mario 64 the name Peach was established for the Princess of the Mushroom Kingdom, before Mario 64 she was know as Princess Toadstool.

I started to realize that shysters is in super Nintendo and Shymore is in the remake. Also their special move drain in super Nintendo and hot shot was in the remake. Also super Nintendo game can't block any special while remake can block inly single special attacks.

I think I'm experiencing a mandela effect, because I swore it was always Mario House not Pipe House.

Love how intuitive and well designed the original game was, definitely understand why they had to add prompts for everything, even timed hits. Wouldn't trust the nowadays audience the same either haha

I got the SNES version for my 8th birthday and it was and has been for 27 years one of my top 3 favorite games of all time. As someone who never thought this day would come, I’d say that overall the remake is adequate - but the things they DID change are very subtly disappointing. It’s like meeting your hero in person but when you go to shake his hand it’s wet for some reason.

I really was bothered that they changed Mack's name. Like come on there was nothing wrong with it.

I’m loving the remake so far. It has put a nostalgic smile on my face the whole way through. Although, I didn’t like the fact that they changed some names around like Mack is now Claymorton, Yaridovich is now Speardovich and Magikoopa is Wizakoopa. Why would they do that? I don’t see the point of doing so. And feels like it is easier now if you use the Triple Combo thingy and when you time the hits perfectly, it hits the others around. So it really feels easier now and I hate that fact. Other than that, I’m loving the game so far. I’m currently heading to Land’s End. Can’t wait to see more!

I never understood why Nintendo changed Princess Toadstool to Peach in the 90's. Toadstool is a mushroom, which is synonymous with the franchise. Peach is a fruit.

If they can bring back the Toad Minister, than they can bring back Toadsworth.

It took me awhile to adjust to the hyper smooth animation of the remake, but seeing them side by side, I had forgotten how rough the original game looks on modern screens. The remake is far and away the superior game.
