Those little white spots on that Amanita muscaria are called warts. Specifically universal veil warts. Not all Amanita have them. Some have patches of universal veil tissue. Its a pretty neat genus of fungi. There is one species of Amanita that is not ectomycorrhizal in California.

I wonder if mistletoe targets trees that are in decline,,, hmmm best look into it. I've never seen mistletoe on pine trees so that was very interesting. Edit - it's not a factor in host selection. I just learnt a lot by reading a paper on mistletoe. Fun fact - there's a mistletoe that only grows on other mistletoes (epiparasitic).

We have a mushroom in the UK called Destroying angel (Amanita virosa), every once in a while someone will eat one. I don't know if anyone has ever survived. I'm amazed by how much diversity you have over there.

IF YOU WANT TO KNOW MORE ABOUT MUSHROOMS IN NORTH AMERICA check out Mushrooms Demystified by David Arora as it teaches you the defining characteristics and then gives you a flow chart like if gills skip to question 3 if it doesn't have gills, skip to question 18 ect. until it gets to some similar ones that you need to read the descriptions with finer details to determine what it is. It is a great book for finding the general area but only has color pictures of the more popular or edible mushrooms so I suggest combining it with the Audubon Society Field Guide to Mushrooms as it has the highest quantity of color photographs of many more mushrooms but doesn't have a flow chart, great descriptions, lists of common mushrooms that you may mistake a particular mushroom for or recipes. It is still necessary when you look one up in Mushrooms Demystified to then look it up in the Audubon Society Field Guide to compare the pictures and descriptions even if the first one has a color photo. From looking at that I would guess that mushroom is a Suillus Granulatus that is a bit dry. They often grow next to pines after it rains and that brown spore print, yellow pores and brown splotchy top that easily bruises is characteristic of them. One easy way to tell the difference is how slimy the top is, If it is slippery without being soaked completely then it is most likely a Suillus, I'' guessing it rained there 7-10 days ago. Hope to see more mushroom info snuck into these videos, maybe also get some standard field guides so you can identify the animals and insects as well and even if you can't if you can get a good enough view of ot we can start leaving comments like "Suillus Granulatus15:15" and you could pin those to the top of the comments and together we could do an informal survey.

You mention and show milkweeds fairly frequently so I wish you would mention just how much monarch butterflies need them for food on their migrations. They've been almost eliminated in the Mid-West thanks to industrial agricultural that leaves no natural vegetation. You run across them fairly requently, at least in the Western states and in Mexico. Anyway, great educational videos and I thank you for them. The huge monarch aggtregations that used to accumulate in that special section of Mexico is almost devoid of Monarchs these days, mainly for lack of milkweeds in the U.S. as they try to make it to Canada and (their offspring) on their way back.

Mexico is home to the greatest diversity of Pines or Pinus if you like in the world. When you go farther south,seeing them with Tillandsias and sharing the world with great Cycads is incredible. I grew up watching "Science in Action" on ch9 in the 60's..I remember the episode on Oaxaca seemed like paradise..huge swarms of butterflies and weird tree ferns. One place I always wanted to see more of, or go there. btw,The Silene and Mirabilis could make great potted fat plants with those tubers. Different.

This is an old video, but I just Wanted to say that the first plant Pseudotsuga menziesii is an invasive tree here in the Netherlands. We planted entire forests of them for mining operations (they crack really loudly before breaking). And now we're stuck with them. I always love seeing plants where they belong!

This is helping me visualize some of the forested areas throughout the desert in a book I'm reading (Blood Meridian). It's kind of hard to fully imagine if you've never been out west. I'm trying to imagine the Comanches and Apaches in these areas.

Thanks to you I can stop saying things like “there’s some technical term for that, but I can’t remember it” instead of mycoheterotrophy! I’ve had two occasions this week to do so, with both uniflora and hypopitys. I think the social commentary is helping the botanical knowledge stick more than the swearing, but I’m not certain. It’s probably best if you keep doing both. Also, I feel like I’ve seen that red asclepias in the Sedona area before. I think Boynton canyon was the only viable habitat for it in the area that I visited. Maybe I’m crazy and it was a tuberosa. I’ll have to check my photos from that trip. Great video, as always!
