Crime Pays But Botany Doesn't

In this episode of Crime Pays But Botany Doesn't, we explore the Spring Mountains just outside Las Vegas. We begin the episode by calling attention to Kyle & Chad's unnecessary and illegal campfire, one of which started a massive wildfire (the Mahogany Fire) in this exact area a mere two weeks after this episode was filmed. At the time of writing, it is still only 10% contained.
We see a number of subspecies and distinct varieties of more widespread plants that are all endemic to this mountain range, having been isolated from their counterparts by oceans of hotter, lower-altitude desert for tens of thousands of years.

I'm a Vegas resident and it's seriously nauseating how the few spots of nature available to the general public get treated like a fuckin' New York sidewalk. The moment I heard about the Mahogany fire I immediately knew it was some dipshit that started it and it was just 2 days later that it was confirmed.

@@johnogden5051 I thought the same. A precise ruler would be the only tattoo I'd be interested in getting. Though, I read once that finger tattoos (like these) don't always last without getting a bit smudged or warped over time, so the ruler on your finger might not always be totally accurate, unfortunately. Still a super cool concept.

“A man could be a lover and defender of the wilderness without ever in his lifetime leaving the boundaries of asphalt, powerlines, and right-angled surfaces. We need wilderness whether or not we ever set foot in it. We need a refuge even though we may never need to set foot in it. We need the possibility of escape as surely as we need hope; without it the life of the cities would drive all men into crime or drugs or psychoanalysis.” ― Edward Abbey

People really underestimate the dangers of a “simple” campfire and it annoys me. I calmly tell and show people how to keep a campfire in control and how to properly put it out but they respond “fire Hot! Throw plastic and cans in! Breathe! Yay! Throw a fresh aspen in there, stack dry leaves right next to it”. And I get yelled at when trying to fix everything. 😂

The "aw yeahs" resonate, when admiring and lauding the evolutionary adaptations, structure, and architecture of gorgeous corollas.... The basic human reaction of "whoa" to something that strikes us as so unequivocally beautiful..... What is it, this 'beauty' thing?..... We all feel it..... There is strength and life giving power in its realization........ This force that humans, despite all of our atrocities, have the ability to feel/observe..... Forget 'trash or treasure' theories, that Frasera is hella beautiful.... Gentiana affinis ovata is about to pop at Bull Point, Pt. Reyes... Some were opening up on Wednesday.

'Lineiifolio' is a very Aussie way of naming things. We like to use the Bleedingly Obvious for our naming of things: So many creeks named Deadman Creek, so many beaches named Five Mile beach etc, then there's Shark Bay and Big Bend [on a river]. My home town is actually called Townsville. But it's named after a guy named Towns #mighthavebeenaprick.

The first time I saw one I took a sample to identify, and some other guy back at the shop (landscaping in my youth) just tasted it and told me what it was. The horticultural varieties available here in Maine hold their needles flat, but my copy of Dirr says they 'should' be like what you have there.
