This is a technical one for the safe guys only - skip it if you're not into safes. My first attempt at a Chubb 7L05 (or similar, exact model to be confirmed) - some tips, tricks, and what I learnt in the process.
Part 2 is here: • [153] Chubb collaborat...

Respect. I don’t know any of the big guys who haul the long yards like you do. Such an honest video.

Thanks bro. I like to tell it how it is, warts and all. That said, this beast taught me a shitload so I'm glad I put in the effort.

Hi Michael, Well done, I thought you had dropped off the ends of the earth! I believe this grey case lock is a 7L05, they also produced a black case lock, not sure of the correct designation. We just call them Chubb 3 wheelers. The locks were similar, but there were variations in the contour of the drive cams. The very old version had a drive cam gate similar to the S&G - with a ramp. They then went to the drive cam without a ramp, so the changes on the dial are much smaller. Later Chubb 4 wheel vault locks had this newer drive cam also. I noticed a tiny movement between spindle, drive cam, and spline key, as you know they should be as one. This will definitely mask consistent contact readings, making manipulation more difficult. Just a tip, remove spline key and using a centre punch, dimple the spline key leg and replace. Regards, Brian.

Thanks Brian - that little tip is going to get pride of place in a video coming up shortly - I've got a lock that needs exactly this.

Looks identical to the 7L05 mk2 I have. That nose has been shaped to make it difficult to read the contact points. They made a black cased 7L08 lock that is also difficult to get the contact points.

Have I understood correctly that the only major difference to your basic S&G safe lock is that this has better tolerances, especially the nose touching the drive cam is smoother? Other than that, another significant difference is the width of gate requiring 1 digit accuracy.

Hi Michael - I have bought a safe with this exact lock. It is locked so I can't cheat. I cannot get a consistent stop on any contact points. I am going to build a device using a stepper motor to try every combination. I figure if I build it, and write the code, it isn't cheating. I am hoping to make a video of the process and I'll share that with you when it's done. Cheers Ross.

I'm interested in your google sheet graphing spreadsheet. Is that something you'd share? I guess I could just copy and attempt to create my own.. But I'm lazy :P I just got a S&G 6370 and want to play with manipulation, so the sheet interests me greatly :)

Yes! I've been looking forward to this video. I have a lock that reminds me of this lock, It's a J&J taylor, it doesnt have any numbers where the contact points are. And the contact points are extreamily hard to feel. (unlinke the S&Gs I'm used to with unmistakable points) Would you mind If I did a collaborative manipulation video of my own? If not that's fine. Great stuff buddy, Happy Holidays! Looking forward to learning more about manipulation !

Hey bro - I'd love to see a video on yours - is it the one in vid 82 / 91?
@RookieLock

@@MichaelMaynard The JJ Taylor, yup video 91.. Their is no spring on the fence arm so hence why I cant feel any contacts. Like I said It's a super old lock, I also think the spindle shaft is bent a bit. Im quite new to Manipulation which is why I'd like to make a collaborative manipulation video on my S&G 6741.. I only know the basic principles though.

Just took a closer look at that video. Looks like an old gravity fence, the Americans were in love with that stuff in the late 1800s through to the early part of the 1900s. You're gonna need to mount that thing up really solidly, get rid of ALL the slop, make sure the spindle is straight and spline key tight, get the back on, and THEN start work on it. I've never seen one of those, we just don't have them in New Zealand. That is an awesome project mate.
@RookieLock
@RookieLock 5 лет назад
Yeah, It's an old bugger, you can only mount it LH orientation, I honestly dont think I'll be manipulating it any time soon, still learning the ropes on the S&G, just gotta find some time to sit down and have a spin. I'm pretty confident I can get it open though, Looking forward to more of your Manipulation series!

I'm attempting to crack an S&G for a friend of mine. Good to know that "no left contact" is "a thing". I've been second guessing my self that I found the drive contacts. Where'd you get your spreadsheet? Got a link?

@@MichaelMaynard thank you... so not chance I could manipulate it myself? I see that you added some numbers to the dial as there is a blank space in-between the 0 and 100 on your dial... is this where the best area was for the contact points? The dial I have shows a blank area between 100 and 20... there is no 1-19 numbers. The safe has an outer door and an inner door. Can I assume that the gate is on the top for both locks? ( the outer door's fence is at the top.... I opened up the back of the lock to see)
