16 abstract sketches with ink and charcoal
I'm working with drawing ink here (Winsor & Newton) colours Sunshine Yellow, Vermilion, Cobalt and a little Viridian. The charcoal I use is a very fine willow stick. I am using Cartridge paper 200gsm. Spray with a fixative one complete to preserve the artwork.
I allow each stage to influence the next, the fine pencil lines at the beginning form the base for the first layer of ink (Sunshine Yellow) The first layer of ink then allows me to decide how to proceed with the next. The very first marks I make with the pencil are used as a guide for the white spaces left free from ink. I allow each ink layer to dry before moving on to the next.
The final colour layer allows me to use this as a starting point for the charcoal marks, I try not to deliberately see anything I don't want a composition to form, I just allow my hand to move over the surface and place marks as I feel they are needed. Working this way on a panel of 16 different sketches allows me to move around and work from sketch to sketch, it prevents one from being overworked and spreads the concentration.
This is a great exercise to try if you want to relax and just enjoy the process of making marks. I hope you give it a try. Thanks for watching.
