16 abstract sketches with ink and charcoal
I'm working with drawing ink here (Winsor & Newton) colours Sunshine Yellow, Vermilion, Cobalt and a little Viridian. The charcoal I use is a very fine willow stick. I am using Cartridge paper 200gsm. Spray with a fixative one complete to preserve the artwork.
I allow each stage to influence the next, the fine pencil lines at the beginning form the base for the first layer of ink (Sunshine Yellow) The first layer of ink then allows me to decide how to proceed with the next. The very first marks I make with the pencil are used as a guide for the white spaces left free from ink. I allow each ink layer to dry before moving on to the next.
The final colour layer allows me to use this as a starting point for the charcoal marks, I try not to deliberately see anything I don't want a composition to form, I just allow my hand to move over the surface and place marks as I feel they are needed. Working this way on a panel of 16 different sketches allows me to move around and work from sketch to sketch, it prevents one from being overworked and spreads the concentration.
This is a great exercise to try if you want to relax and just enjoy the process of making marks. I hope you give it a try. Thanks for watching.

Thanks again for all your positive comments. I try to reply to all as soon as I can and sorry if this is a little late sometimes. I am always happy to answer any questions you may have regarding some of the techniques and materials used. Enjoy the demo.

I bought a dip pen after your Andy Warhol-themed video and I’m loving the technique. I will try this new idea tomorrow! Luckily I have some fixative spray I use for my photography printing and this works perfectly with charcoal.

Hair spray will work too. Dan uses it. And it's much less expensive than buying the professional brands.

@@DrummerGrrrl Good idea - the photography spray is really expensive

@@RichardLaurence Yeah, the fixative for acrylic paintings is pretty $$$ too. I use both. But for stretched canvases that I hope to sell, I use either one and then use a liquid varnish just to be on the safe side.

I will be filming some more demos with the dip pen as it is such a great technique to try and has lots of potential for creating expressive marks.

@@DanTirels I'm collecting images of animals and people and pics of architecture and textiles to use the Warhol technique on. Then, those drawings will be used in a collage with other painting techniques. 😀

Hi Dan, just wanted to thank you for continuing to post your creativity and beautiful works here so consistently ... I, as well as many others (obviously), really appreciate watching you work and all the pieces you've created ... question: do you sell what we watch you make and, if so, where would that be - you've got to pay the bills, right? ... how do you do it? Thanks again, major Michigan admirer!!

Thanks very much, I'm pleased to know that you are enjoying the videos. I would like to say that I sell my work all the time and galleries are full of exhibitions of my work, alas this is not the case and like many artists it can be a struggle to find an outlet for your creations, and often galleries will demand as much as 60% of the sale price. I do sell my own work but this will be mainly through my own website. The artwork that I produce for these demos is sometimes sold and I plan to have more available in future.

@@DanTirels Yes, have been to your store - very nice, and I like the t-shirts and phone covers ... a lady I know in England that makes lino-prints has made copies of her favorite prints and sells the prints also but naturally for quite a bit less than the originals, but she can have a bunch run off at a time for fans and its a quick sale - she also puts those images on higher quality blank greeting cards (with envelopes) and sells them individually too - also a quick sale and these are very easy to drop into the post ... other sites I've been too also put their images onto blank white coffee mugs and I'll bet your fans would love to have a few of these ... all of these ideas are very high margin, so you'll earn a significant amount for very little time investment post original creations. Oh, and another way to get your images out there are on blank cloth tote bags (natural colors, or white if you prefer depending on the piece). Hope these ideas help and there are places that will do all the applications onto the bags/mugs for you, like the t-shirts and phone covers you stock now. I know I'd be first in line to purchase an assortment - love your work!!

Have you tried using a dip pen with black ink instead of the charcoal ? I love the charcoal , but I'm going to try pen and ink for a change of pace. As always thank you for the videos.

Hi Dan Loved this video I have a set of colored alcohol inks but I think you are using drawing/acrylic/water-based ink?? Am I correct ? I’d like to buy a set of colours - can you advise please? I’m not sure what to ask for .. Thank you Erica

In the demo I am using Winsor & Newton drawing inks, find these in any good art supply shop or try online such as Amazon or ebay. They are usually available in sets and are a great addition to your art materials. I can recommend giving them a try.
