Inspired by.......Andy Warhol Blotted line technique
I wanted to continue the series of demos that have been inspired by the techniques of other artists and thought that this very simple technique that Andy Warhol developed and used in some of his early designs from the 1950's when he worked as an illustrator for magazines.
Take your time with this and it needs some practice, I love the way it creates these imperfections and the characteristic blots. Don't overload the pen with ink because the image will be flooded. When applying the colour leave it quite sketchy and allow the white of the paper to show.
0:00 Andy Warhol's Illustration work in which he uses the blotted line technique.
0:33 Begin with 3 types of paper, Tracing paper for the ink transfer, An absorbent paper such as cartridge paper for the actual artwork and a copy paper for the original design (use any kind of paper for this) Tape everything down with masking tape to prevent any movement once the tracing has started.
2:06 Begin to draw your original design, I'm keeping this simple for the purpose of this demo so you will be able to follow the technique. I am showing a mirror copy in this demo which means the transfer copy will be seen in reverse. If you wanted an identical copy then you will need to work from a reverse of the original.
3:42 Applying the ink. Use Indian drawing ink applied with a dip pen (you will find these at most good art supply shops or online, I bought mine from eBay and they are not too expensive) Do not overfill the dip pen with ink, practice on a scrap piece of paper first, the amount of ink applied at this stage is important, too little and the image will not appear but if you flood the pen with ink the image will be ruined. This process has to be done slowly tracing a little of the original each time and carefully applying a little pressure onto the transfer. You want a rough uneven line with occasional blots of ink. Each printed transfer will be unique.
8:40 Applying the colour. You can keep the design monochrome at this stage or maybe work on more copies using the same design (use a clean sheet of tracing paper each time) Adding colour really brings out the design and shows the possibilities with this technique. Keep to just a couple of colours or begin with just one. I use Acrylic for this but you could also try water colour or even coloured pencils. Use loose brush strokes allow the white of the paper to show, it doesn't really matter if you go over the ink lines.
11:14 THE FINISHED DESIGN This is a great process but it can be tricky to begin with, practice a few times and the loading of the ink pen is crucial to getting this right. Enjoy and I hope you get great results. Thanks for watching.

Dear teacher, I would like to ask you if we can apply this technique to canvas. On canvas primed with gesso

What fun! I like this series of videos. To me, these lines seem related to your monoprint ones, nice and scratchy and organic.

Yes this is a good way to achieve that raw quality with your work, it doesn't always work but it's great when it does.

Wow, thats brilliant. I'm wondering if I can do that with fabric as well. I'll have to try it out. Thank you.

I don't know about that but it would be worth experimenting. You might need to use block printing ink or something similar.

Worst case, you can always tear or slice the work into pieces to be used in a new collage.

Have you tried alcohol ink mono printing? I’ve noticed mono prints are kind of your thing. You can draw on clear acetate and spritz your paper with alcohol (make sure it soaks in for more control) and you get a really neat watery lookin transfer
