Acrylic and charcoal sketch on 10" x 12" canvas panel.
Filming in real time with edits to allow for the paint to dry.
I always enjoy showing the whole process from a blank canvas to finished composition. I like the unexpected elements of working this way. These small sketches can help me to work out ideas for much larger compositions. This is filmed with a new camera so you may notice a difference from the previous videos.
Materials : Canvas panel, Acrylic paints, large brush, Charcoal and a cheap hairspray to fix the charcoal.

The charcoal brought up the texture of the canvas in a nice way. And just when I thought you were done - you took the piece to an entirely new level. Wow. Thank you again for allowing us to see you work.

thanks for sharing. I see two girls facing a thunderstorm with their heads together, in their bright raingear. the one on right has her eyes closed. the one on the left is open eyed and leading the way. just what i started to see develop as you were painting. the joy of abstract. your art has actually introduced some of my friends to the love of it. 2 of my art pieces inspired by your style were shown in my very first art exhibit last year. thank you.

I always learn something from watching you. Thak you. Did you begin this sketch with an idea in mind, or was it all improvised?
@DanTirels
@DanTirels 2 года назад
I sometimes have a few thoughts and with this I knew it would begin as an abstract head, gradually as I work instinct takes over and I have a good idea of when to stop, the colours I use are nearly always decided before I start.

I wonder what is on your mind when you put colors and lines making those wonderful compositions????
@DanTirels
@DanTirels 2 года назад
I have often thought that myself. I sometimes I forget about the camera so what you witness in the videos is my working methods.

Don’t yah just Love to Smudge 😄? Mind if I ask , are you using vine or willow charcoal?
@DanTirels
@DanTirels 2 года назад
I like both, but vine charcoal seems smoother and is good for finer lines, pencils and charcoal powder is also good to work with and I will show this in future demos.
@tiggy4062
@tiggy4062 2 года назад
I have been watching many of your wonderful demonstrations. Do you plan or is it intuitive- the shapes? Do you have subject matters etc ?
@DanTirels
@DanTirels 2 года назад
That is a good question and the answer is a bit of both I often feel the composition as I work or I might begin with a concept such as an abstract figure or landscape, but everything is still carefully thought about but in a very instinctive way, filming the videos can be tricky because I want to show the whole process as naturally as it is possible without the camera getting in the way, I do this by setting up the lights and camera and then ignoring them as much as possible. I hope it works, sometimes it doesn't. Thanks for watching.
