Can you store encrypted passphrases on a different SD card than you use for signing transactions? That way the SD card with the encrypted passphrases never touches a computer. This would require hot swapping SD cards unless you do seed lock down.

So if you do not create a passpharase by default your coldcard is essentially one wallet with a passphrase that is an empty string

So the seed lockdown is mostly for convenience, right? so you don't have to keep entering the password in every time you use the cold card. The downside is if someone can bypass/crack the pin, which has been done before, they have access to your funds. If you don't do a seed lockdown and they break through or bypass the pin they would still need to know the password to sign transactions. Tradeoffs are tough for self custody :( I initially though multi sig was too complicated, but now I am wondering whether its the safest way to do things.

How has a randomly generated pin been cracked before on the cold card? Isn’t there a limited number of pin attempts?

What's the point of seed lockdown?

I could imagine you can set up a coldcard for yourself, with several active passphrases, and then you set up a seed lockdowned coldcard for a family member, which has access only to that part. Does that make sense?

Why Lock Down the Seed? You may need to create multiple wallets based on the same seed words for delegation to other people. Save a backup file from the default wallet created by your set of seed words. Get the required number of COLDCARDs, choose Import Existing during setup and load the same backup file onto each of them. Give each COLDCARD its own passphrase and then lock down the seed. Your seed words will not be known to any of the devices and remain secure. Source:coldcard.com/docs/passphrase
