I'm trying to decide if he's makeing the explaination more complicated than it needs to be for the young audience it appears to be aiming for. Personly I never think about P.E.M.D.A.S. at all, but I haven't been a kid in decades.

super simple 9-5 is 4. Then 4 * 4 is 16. 16 /16 is 1 then 1 * 16. is 16. Start in ( ) then work your way out. until you got 16 / [ ] * 16.

I thought I was good at math until I came across this channel. That being said, I did get this one right. Math was a real struggle in 7th grade because I felt intimidated. As a result, I was put in a slower math class the next year. This gave me more time to learn it. I found out that I loved math. I continued at a slower pace for the rest of HS, so I didn't get to learn as much. As I try to figure out these problems, a lot is coming back to me. I think I would like to take a refresher course.

I see that so many of 'us' are mentally agile enough to solve these problems in less than 10 secs in their head!! And age is no handicap - I am a young, sprightly, 85yo, and solve quite easily all algebra, and 99% of calculus, that this great contributor lays before us!! I never went to university ( although I did have a 'place' offered at Southampton in 1959 to read Statistics ) so there are limits on just how much I can recall; but where memory may sometimes fail me - I reconstruct methods using empiric examples!! CHEERS!! :)

@@brucecunningham2944 awesome comment. I sometimes put something in my pocket then 10 minutes later I wonder how the heck it got in there😂😂😂😂😂 in reality a lot of these problems are basic math problems and can be solved with a calculator. This problem is a 4th grade math problem.

I went to school in Istanbul Turkey at Robert’s college in the early 50s, from 2 nd grade we were encouraged to do arithmetic in my head before paper and. Pencil. The kids in the states are at a disadvantage, what a shame.
@johnshaw6702
@johnshaw6702 3 месяца назад
Nothing well get you in trouble faster than giving the answer without showing the proof. Kids in the states are not at a disadvantage because they have to show their work, even if they already knew the answer before writing down the steps. But it's always good practice to do mathematical problems in your head. As adults, we do it all the time.

Transcription of how I resolved in my head : 16 / [(9-5)^2] * 16 → 16/ [4^2] * 16 → 16 / 16 * 16 → 1 * 16 = 16 That problem could have been written as 16 * [(9-5)^2] /16 with the same result → 16 * 16 / 16 = 256 / 16 = 16. Mental math that I do on occasion : Take some phone number from the side of a truck or billboard. Take the number from a licence plate. Mentally multiply one by the other while walking on a stroll.

Final answer.

There aren't any calculators that will evaluate the expression 1+2×3 as 9. Well, I suppose I haven't checked every calculator on the planet, so if there is one then I'd be fascinated to see it. There are simple Immediate Execution calculators that will give the output 9 if you press buttons in the sequence 1 then + then 2 then × then 3 then = But they are extremely basic machines not capable of parsing and evaluating a complete expression. In effect what they are doing when you press that button sequence is evaluating (1+2)×3

16 First reduce 9-5=4 Second square the result to equal 16 to get this expression 16÷16×16 Now you can either reduce the 16÷16 first then multiply 16 after or 16÷16=1; 1×16=16 You can reduce the entire equation with canceling the denominator and the multiplied 16 together to get 16÷1 as a final equation which also equals 16.

Sorry. I answered the maths (please note) in a few seconds - and hated maths at school in the 1960, and found the pace of the explanation really tedious. I suppose I wanted the answer and then the explanation. I kept on jabbing the forward button to get to the solution. Perhaps being 70 makes me conscious of time-use. Getting rid of this telephone might be a start.

The answer is 16. That said, you mentioned not solving 16 X 16. I agree that it is not needed here. But for those of us who are old-school IBM mainframe programmers, we all know off the top of our heads that 16 squared is 256. Back in the day, when a mainframe program would puke, you would have to read a hexadecimal dump to understand what was going on when your program terminated. Thanks for the video.
