You guys have no idea how excited I am to get my hands on the new 16in Macbook Pro. Since I tested the latest 15inch Macbook Pro my confidence was beginning to restore in Apple’s interest to satisfy the needs of creative professionals like myself and so many of you watching this video. But I still had my doubts. Overheating issues, keyboard malfunctions, and laggy performance were all still a concern to me.
Let me say, that is ALL over and so much MORE!
Screen
Honestly, the boost to 16 inches is really not a big deal… but what is a big deal is the fact that they have fit this 16in screen in a laptop that is barely bigger than my favorite model of the Macbook Pro (2015 model), which btw has a 15.4in screen. So they have only given us a total upgrade of .6 inches.
Color Gamut
The screen is wonderful. They are using the same True Tone Retina LCD display. However, they have boosted the resolution to 3072x1920. It reaches a 100% gamut range on Adobe RGB and P3. So it is color accurate and sharp as ever.
There are also some really nice upgrades that I am sure most of us were not expecting.
Speakers
SIX, that is the number of speakers hidden below the keyboard deck of the 16in Macbook Pro. And let me tell you it makes a BIG difference. Crisp tones, low bass, and clear vocals. Check it out…
The previous models have relied on two speakers to deliver your tunes, and this unexpected upgrade goes to show how Apple still cares deeply about the user experience of its consumers. YOU DON’T want to hear the speakers on my Dell XPS 15. They are awful.
Built-In Mic
Although Apple still has a built-in webcam that only pumps out 720p quality video they have upgraded the microphone to what they are calling studio-level performance. Check it out and let me know what y’all think in the comment section below.
Keyboard
The scissor-switch keyboard is back and it feels, well just like the old one (which is probably the biggest compliment you could pay this laptop). They have given 1mm of travel to the keys to the former .56mm given to the butterfly keyboard, which I will say I did not MIND after using it during my tests, but that does not mean I prefer it by any means. I love the longer key travel.
Trackpad
Beautiful, responsive, BIG, and capable as ever the trackpad is still the pride and joy of this computer in my opinion. After spending the past 4 years on a Dell XPS 15 I must say I am happy to be home on the Macbook Pros incredibly engineered trackpad. I went through my entire college career using only the trackpad, whereas I could not go two days on the Dell XPS without almost losing my cookies.
Ports
Yep, I still loathe the ports for the lack of usability on the fly and their simple lack of ports. Think about it. You start with four ports, but wait, no you need to charge your computer and hook up two screens (which I do every day). Now you have one port. I don’t know about you but my workflow demands much more than one port outside of my standard hook-ups.
Battery
With the new 100W battery (FAA-Approved for Flight) Apple is claiming 11 hours of battery, but those battery tests are run at 50% screen brightness while browsing the web. If according to my tests for graphic designers and video editors you are looking at anywhere from 6-8 hours of battery life.
The model I am reviewing has the following specs:
Specs:
Processor: Intel 9th Gen 6-Core i7-9750H
RAM: 16GB
GPU: AMD Radeon Pro 5300M with 4GB of GDDR6
SSD: 512GB SSD
Weight: 4.3 Lbs
Tests:
9 Minute 4k Export to 4k - 5:41.49
9 Minute 4k Export to 1080p - 1:39.88
2GB Raw File “Save As” - 19.02
In order to improve the performance on the 16in Macbook Pro, they ave added a larger heatsink and thicker fans blades to cool the system. This has worked very well, however, the fans in the i7 version had to kickup pretty high to keep this machine running cool and fast.
This review should not have celebrated such simple achievements. Many of the things mentioned in this video are things that Apple should have been accomplishing for the past 4 years, but due to Apple’s quest to create the thinnest high performing laptops, they goofed up a little. But I can say with near-perfect confidence (outside of what to expect with the keyboard) that the Apple laptop is BACK in a big way!
