Apple’s MacBook Pro has been the bread and butter for graphic designers for over a decade and with good reason. Historically they have been fabulous laptops capable of throwing any type of design task you can throw their way.
But what if you are on a budget? What if you are unable to fork out $2800 - $3500 for a brand new MacBook Pro? That is why I made this video. Let’s talk about the 2019 MacBook Pro and the 2015 MacBook Pro. Is it wise to buy a used or pre-owned MacBook Pro for your graphic design needs? With all the developments in the Adobe software is a used laptop still capable of efficiently running the programs necessary to be a graphic designer?
Well, it is time to find out!
If this video I am going to run some head to head test, talk about the revisions/differences with these two laptops, and help you come to a qualified buying decision for your perfect graphic design laptop.

IF you are a graphic designer and you will not be performing any motion design, animation, or video editing then the 2015 model will suit your needs well. But if you may think you will dabble in those areas, or you are a dedicated video editor than the 2019 model is the way to go!

I hate the new keyboard so much I'm selling my 2017 and downgrading to a second hand 2015 macbook pro. I never realised how important the keys are until I used a shit one. Not only that I can't stand that stupid touch bar too... at best it adds a few quirky shortcuts for casual users, at worst it's horrible for pros because we rely on touch feedback and muscle memory. Not to mention it's easy to slightly brush the touch bar and you'll end up closing a tab or setting off siri. I've been with Apple for a long time and I've never been so pissed off with their design choices.

Hey, I got a 2015 MBP with dGPU (with new battery + screen) myself last week for $1200. Great value for the money, especially if you can't afford the new 16" (yet). Also you get a reliable keyboard, no flexgate screen, a reasonably sized trackpad, Magsafe, SDXC, HDMI, and the iconic illuminated Apple Logo. Also, in most benchmarks is it barely slower than the 2016/2017 models. I can still highly recommend it! And in 2-3 years I can switch to the 16" generation :-)

Some 2015 models come with a dual GPU (it uses an AMD dedicated chip and its integrated Intel chipset) and those are screamers, even today.

Honestly I would be weary to recommend the 2014 MBP for After Effects. I'm concerned without the newer generation i7 and a bigger dedicated GPU it may not be able to handle it. :-/

Would have loved if you addressed quality issues of macbooks from 2015-2019. Some notable ones include: screen cable flexgate; keyboard noise, issues, replacement program; touch bar usefulness; track pad space; magnetic charging cable missing; easily bent hinges; and of course the infamous T2 security chip. There is also an interesting difference another youtuber found: the low/mid 13" models are from 2017, and only the high end is built from 2019. They each have big differences in SSD speed, but not so much their processor (compared to the high end, it's like 5% faster). They also don't include an extension 3-prong charging cable, that's an extra $25. I'm going to wait and see what comes out in 2020/2021 because there's rumor of a micro-LED technology coming to replace LCD and OLED based on Apple's patents. BTW if you need a big speed boost for ANY laptop, check out an external graphics drive setup for mac. You can use a 4GB graphics processor on a 2013 macbook air to play high-res games flawlessly for like $500. It's a great alternative solution to spending $2,000.

If you are working in Photoshop there is no need for the dual graphics.... the specs you mentioned on the 2015 model will be suitable.

I upgraded from 2015 to 2018 model for more cores to do photography/video editing. I use both CF card and SD card so have to buy a reader anyway and there's plenty of good usb-c card readers. By the way, it's over 100% srgb space about 90% adobe rgb and Apple claimed 100% dci-p3 color space.

If you really want to buy the latest MacBook Pro, you really need to buy the silicone keyboard cover to prevent dust getting the keyboard stuck. It should be the first thing you should buy right after getting the laptop

If you are working on 3D design I would not go for the 13 in. "I would get the base model 15 in or above. Reasons: 13in has no dedicated GPU which is helpful for 3D design and the 13 in has a slower i7 processor. Hope this helps.

Hello Ben, For school I'm going to need a laptop and I dont really know what to get. I'm working with the Adobe cloud mostly with Illustrator, inDesign, Photoshop and Lightroom. How do you tell from the specs whether or not the laptop has dual graphics? I know you reference staying away from the butterfly keyboard. Is the Force Touch Trackpad acceptable?

I would look at the detailed specs. If it states having an NVIDIA or AMD GPU then you know it has a dedicated (dual) GPU. Yeah, the Force touch is good.

Hi! Thanks so much for the video, it's been really helpful. I wonder if you could give me some extra insight and answer a question I have? I have a 2015 13" MacBook Pro, 2,7 GHz Intel Core i5, and 8GB RAM which I absolutely love. However, lately it's been giving me more and more trouble (after a while of working on stuff the icons on the top disappear, my laptop can't read any text from any of my dropdown menus, won't let me save, freezes continuously and so on), and given the extensive daily use I've been making of it for the past four years I'm worried it might be time to look into a newer laptop. Having just graduated, my family is willing to invest some money into helping me afford something new, and I was thinking of switching to the MacBook Pro 2019. Ideally a 15", but I can do with a 13" as well since that's what I'm used to. I travel a fair amount for work and the keyboard issues you mentioned worry me, however the fact my 2015 laptop will likely be getting outdated soon is making me lean towards abandoning it. Do you think it'd be best, considering I wouldn't work with videos but still use my Mac around 10 hours every day for graphic design purposes, to invest in professionally resetting my 2015 laptop and keeping this one, or to finally invest in a 2019 MacBook Pro? First things first I would reach out to Apple and get on the phone with one of their customer representatives. They are usually really helpful. I would explain what is going on and the inquire how much it would cost to get it back in tip top shape...if it is above $1000 I would not do it. I’d put that money into a new machine. Apples phone customer support is usually VERY helpful. I’d start there :) I hope this helps.

I would choose the Lenovo Y540 out of those two. But more than that, If you have a little more budget I would consider the MSI Prestige 15 - geni.us/Prestige15-16gb or the MSI Creator 15 - geni.us/msiCreator15M-i5 These are great creator laptops. :)

hmm, depends, if you like more ram and a bigger display and some extra ports, the 2015. If you like the slim design and usb c only and things like that the 2019. Personally I got myself that exact MBP2 2015 15" you described. I buyed a used one. Reason is mostly the new Keyboard issues with the new butterfly keyboards. I use my macbook in school every day and I couldn't give it away a few days just because the keyboard breaks! The keyboard issue is a dealbreaker for me. All in all Im absolutley glad I picked the 2015 one. I can use the extra space of the SSD since I have a 2nd partition with windows on my mac. Also the 16GB I can use for virtuallisation and then I have a bigger display after all, which also really helps for multitasking because I really use it every day. It's a solid work station.

Hi SHOSHO I'm an architectural designer and model buildings in 3D and do high realistic renders. I currently use Twinmotion which is base off on the unreal engine however I do know anything to do with unreal engine you will need a dedicated graphic's Card and as a minimum a Quad Core CPU and as much ram as you can get. The MacBook Pro's 2015 max out at 16gigs of ram however the new MacBook pros do have dedicated graphics and can be configured to 32gigs of ram. In summary you should invest in higher CPU & Cores, A dedicated Graphics Card and as much ram as you can afford. Hope this helps but make sure to visit unreal engine to see their minimum recommended requirements to run the program however please note the minimums will sometimes have below settings and resolution feedback to run the program.

I’m torn between a 2015 13in 8gb 128gb i5 2.7ghz for $680 or the newest 2019 13in 8gb 256gb i5 quadcore 8th gen for $1200 ($1500 retail but there’s a promotion currently) I want to be able to use softwares like Cinema4D, photoshop, and Sony Vegas comfortably and with ease (like speeds and ports) I don’t need anything crazy fast but definitely not crazy slow either. What would you recommend? (Pro models for each)

Ben G Kaiser i also thought of MSI Prestige PS65 as an alternative, what's your thought about it? I did mostly photo retouch, graphic design, digital illustrations, music production and game coding. Had been a windows user for all of my life. In early 2019 i got myself a 12 inch macbook as a graduation gift fron my father and then that's what makes me thinking of getting a macbook pro after using it for a while as its battery life, display, and touchpad is clearly the best you can get on the market, at least in my country. Just as what my original comment, i am really not convinced to get the 13 inch version due to its 8gb ram. Since i had many layers and/or bunch of brushes stock that could get your ram filled up pretty quickly. I also can't stop using the notorious ram eater browser the google chrome as my main browser 😂😂😂 My current main laptop is the 2016 MSI GP62 6QF Leopard Pro. Which i have upgraded it's ram to 32gb, filled empty the nvme slot with 1tb ssd, swapped the 1tb hdd with 2tb sshd then put the original hdd to a drive caddy since that's the last year that laptop manufacturers still put a dvd reader inside them xD. Most of my steam games fortunately can be played on a mac (dota2, skyrim, and cities skylines) so I'm also thinking about that possibilities too when i decided to retire my nearly 4 years old laptop and switch to macbook pro.

You are very lucky. 2016s are not the MBPs to recommend, since they have the most teething problems from the new generation. Especially keyboard (butterfly gen.1) and display (flexgate), the battery is small (only 76Wh) plus the performance boost compared to the 2015 is negligible. I would rather get a 2015, or 2018=

No, I recommend getting a different brand. The air is not powerful enough and a 128ssd is too low. I would not ever buy a 128gb ssd, it will fill up too quickly. Mac os updates, programs, photo’s(which you should get quite a lot of if you are going to edit), etc. Acer, Asus and Huawei have great laptops for the budget that you mentioned. Also the screen isn’t the best, if you want detail which you’ll need for photoshop you’ll need a good screen.

If you only need those programs and are on a budget, look into something like an asus ux461 zenbook. I bought mine for less than 600€ litghtly used and it has roughly the specs of the 2200€ macbook

There's one major issue with this comparison and final result though. The 2015 was using integrated graphics vs a dedicated chip. If you're running a dedicated gpu on the older macbook pro it's going to be able to render / export the 4k much easier than the iris crap. So I wouldn't completely rule out the older machine.. just make sure it's going to have a dedicated GPU.

@@xyzabc-nu3vd hey! I’m think it will work, I can’t say that the newest version of photoshop will run smooth af, but at least the 2020 version I know you can run it properly. In the end of 2020 I sold my 2015 mpb to buy a new one, so the last version of PS that I used on it was the 2020 one. But I can assure you that the 2015 model is a great option, even almost 7 years later!

Upgrade the RAM over the storage. This will greatly improve the performance of the machine. You can always buy an affordable external hard drive to get more storage space later.

@@achmadmuttaqien6854 I have both I can say it feels very good to type on the 2015 one, it flows naturally, and on the 2019, there's a certain level of clickiness but you stop feeling it after typing for a few minutes and starts to pretty much feel like typing on a touchscreen because of the low key travel. Also, if you're used to feel the keys with muscle memory without looking down, it won't work well with the 2019 one, the keys are so shallow that it's hard to know where your hands are on the keyboard without looking down.

The lack of ports isn’t about selling dongles it’s about forcing all your data into the cloud where it can be read analysed and monitored. Computers offer too much freedom and privacy. Soon you won’t be able to mod any laptop at all and all your data will not only be in the cloud but small print will say they own it. Like Facebook does. You will never get your ports back instead they will eventually all be gone

My 2015 Macbook Pro died on me not too long ago. I'm a little strapped for cash so I found a good deal on the 2019 Macbook Air so I bought it. I've noticed that it's so much slower than my 2015. Takes so long to even connect to the internet where as the 2015 Pro would connect right away. How is that even possible?

What will a new MBP perform like compared to an older model. With that in mind, can the viewer buy an older model and still get the performance he or she is looking for... or should they buy a new one. I hope this makes sense. I think such a comparison makes sense if the two macs come at exactly the same price (but then it wouldn't make much sense to buy a model from years ago). As I think the idea is not to compare them by price, a better comparison in my opinion would be to compare the 2015 mac with a 2019 mac compatible with its config. Also using a mac 2019 with i7 (I think we only have 6 core versions today, but I would need a better check). Other than that, compare using exactly the same version of MacOS (I think this you already did, but it was not clear). In other comparatives this is a common mistake, I saw people comparing a mac 2015 with old MacOS versus a mac 2019 with current MacOS, which also doesn't make much sense.

I don't think it is a huge concern. If she did a lot of video editing I would be concerned. Graphic Design and Photo editing is not as labor intensive as video editing.
