Looks like we had a Final Cut Pro fail and the display metrics got blanked. Here are those metrics: 506 nits 100% P3 and sRGB, 89% Adobe RGB 2.2 gamma, 6700K 37,500:1 contrast ratio. 0.001 black level.
You should look elsewhere, she said many INCORRECT things specially in the gaming side of things. There are many other reviews running the games that she says are not available.
Great to see you reviewing these Macbooks, your X1 Carbon reviews have also been so good over the years. No BS, thorough, pleasant reviews from someone who knows their stuff.
I don't usually watch tech reviews, but planning on getting one so I've been watching a lot, and hands down yours is the best one. Literally answered my questions just as I was thinking them! Thank you!!!
Same here...just pulled the trigger on the 16" base model with 1TB. Will be delivered tomorrow. Can't wait! If we're looking at -ve's, better a cold chassis than a hot MBP with the incessant noise of the fans spinning in protest ;-)
@@jsarratt1 I was about to complain but it sounds like you stayed with the 16 core? Making me wait another 4 weeks. My gosh this is torture. I shouldn't have waited until it was actually released. Shoulda bought when they announced it.
@@mikechivy I too waited beyond pre-order BUT .. release day, was at local mall 🍎 store when it opened. Wasn’t even super busy. They had base models (perhaps others too) in stock. In/out in 20 mins w/ base model 16”. Loving it. Wondering if I should’ve skipped 2021 M1 iMac 24”. Might sell or gift it. It too is amazing BUT I truly don’t need both plus my 2020 iPad Pro 🤷🏽♀️🤣
@@mikechivy Yeah...the 16 core base model. I was willing and prepared to pop into my local Apple Store to get it, seeing that home delivery was estimated around the end of Nov! Amazon Prime had base models for next day delivery, so I went with that. Yup... you're looking at a 4 week wait. If you don't need to the extra processing power go for it! Otherwise, you might as well wait it out. I've been more or less "waiting" since 2015 and I don't need the extra power so I'm good.
M1 Max MacBook Pro runs very smoothly. No noise at all. Battery lasts forever. For casual operation it lasts all day. Battery hardly drains when close the lid. Instant wake up when you open the lid. I love the product .
Great video, thanks! Small correction however: the RAM bandwidth is 200 and 400 GIgaBYTES/s, not GigaBITS/s. Which means it is 8x more than mentioned in the video.
I remember your 16" Intel review from two years ago and I thought about it often and hoped I would find you again for a review of these new M1 Pro/Max powered machines. Great review :)
I can't thank you enough for being so straight forward and to the point instead of watching benchmarks run between the super base model vs ultra high spec. Most of us will go neither option (I don't think anyways). I was waiting to see whether I should drop the $$$ on more SSD aka going from 1TB to 2TB or going to the Max. I'm happy that my choice with the M1 Pro, 32gigs of ram and 2TB will be ideal for my use case. For games, I guess it'll give me an excuse to pick up a PS5 somehow haha
One of the only review channels I watch. Most of RU-vid is filled with so called "Tech RU-vidrs" wo are just reading specs and creating stupid thumbnails.
The new designs of the Pro models make me very excited for the refreshed MacBook air when that comes out sometime next year. The only thing I do that is actually hardware intensive is gaming so I just can't justify even the base 14." Someone like me is better served by the more entry level laptop and a PC desktop for when I want to play games.
macOS is not written for touch and Apple are wary the damage MS did when they went touch with W8. That should be a warning! I moved to macOS because of W8 and MS going hybrid and I suspect millions of others did. Anyway it is clear now Apple is: make the best laptop and best tablet and let Window's OEMs do the hybrid stuff.
Apple designers finally got the chips they imagined but they had to do it themself, only took 5 years or 12 if we're talking about Stevejobs 2008 Macbook Air
I bet everyone wishes their mum was cool with tech like this. One small point don't mix your bits and bytes. It's MegaBytes / sec. A slip of the tongue but bits is one/8th the speed!
While I still prefer the simplicity of a console when it comes to gaming, I do wish that Apple would just buy a few game studios and take gaming a bit more seriously. Apple Arcade is a nice start, but I'd like to see some AAA games brought to Apple platforms. With Apple Silicon becoming more capable, it would be nice to see what they can do with games built for Metal.
Since adobe premiere is not as optimized for apple, I would be interested in seeing a platform vs platform test with export times. One clip put in apple final cut with apple hardware vs the adobe pc software with pc hardware using the same clip.
Very soon apple wont even need 140W their top SKU will be fine with 100W. The M1 Pro/Max are still on TSMC 5nm, wait until we get to 3nm and below. It is great to see the level of performance and efficiency. I'm excited also to see how Qualcomm and Intel will respond. I'm waiting patiently knowing that Qualcomm acquired Nuvia and Intel had Jim Keller, we are yet to see their respective impact.
I found the sound on the macbook air M1 really bad, extremely muffled (which a lot of people were describing as "improved base", but not really, it was muffled) compared to my early 2015 mac air which stopped me from buying one. How is the sound on the new 14 inch? Thanks.
wanted to check if the MAX was suitable for games like Apex legends, but unfortunately there wasnt a benchmark for it, but nevertheless great review. I like the Anime T-Shirts. they look cool XD
If you predominantly do development and fairly large financial models it sounds like the M1 pro is the right option to get. But, what if you also run Linux and Windows virtually on parallels but probably not simultaneously. Would it still makes sense to stay with the standard M1 Pro or upgrade the M1 Pro to 32 GB or even go to the M1 Max but only go to 24 cores on the GPU to save cost and battery life?
Lisa has to be the most trustworthy, down-to-earth tech reviewer out there. Sincerely, thank you very much for your balanced approach to these products.
I've been watching your videos since I was a freshman in high school, asking my mom to give me rides to the local AT&T store so I could test out the keyboards on the display models! Your content hasn't missed a step after all these years! I have to pinch myself and acknowledge how incredible your reign has been. The greatest!
I won't tell you how old I am now, because I don't want you to feel as old as I feel typing this comment.. but I'll tell you I camped out for the iPhone 4 release in high school.
There are a very few that comes close to this talented reviewer, who is trusty and professional and fair in her review. If you watch only three reviews, watch her for sure. Thank you for all that you do.
16" Pro seems like the ultimate dream machine. I'm thinking about trading in my 2019 16" before the value starts to really deteriorate over time. Currently working full time on a M1 Mini, this thing is a beast already and I really have no need for a laptop since WFH mostly.
@@markm0000 I traded in my mid 2015 MBP and still got $550 for it LOL. What hurts though is that I can't sell my 2017 5K iMac to save my life and apple trade in value for it is only $1000. Just a sea of scammers on ebay, FB market and craigslist too :(
The difference in battery is quite disappointing for the m1 max. 10% is not insignificant. I really wish apple offered a m1 pro with 64 gb of ram for those of us with higher ram usage but with less gpu intensive tasks
@@LEDsellers while 10% is certainly not insignificant, maybe it isn't really anything out of expectation when you think about a chip that basically jumps from 3060 levels up to 3080 levels of performance
I picked up the 16" M1 pro (16 GB RAM, 1 TB SSD, silver) and I couldn't be happier with it! I agree with everything you said in the review, Lisa! I'm seeing similarly amazing battery life and I don't think I've heard the fans come on yet!
Happy to see someone picked up same setup as mine. Thank god that I picked m1pro instead max I heard its half pund heavier and battery drainage bit faster than pro version
Thank you! I was waiting for the battery life comparison after reading The Verge review where they stated that Apple confirmed that the Max consumes more power on idle and when active.
John Almas did a comparison of the M1 Max vs a much more expensive RTX 3090/Ryzen 9 PC and not only did the M1 Max beat it for video editing and exporting in Resolve (2x faster with the Macbook) it also beat the PC in Premiere Pro as well (2x faster on the M1 Max!). And keep in mind this feat is done both plugged in or on battery. As for gaming, Tally Ho Tech did Shadow Of The Tomb Raider benches vs a RTX 3080 laptop (100w) and the M1 Max beat the RTX 3080... and that's considering the game ran on the Mac under Rosetta emulation. He then compared to the highest end RTX 3080 laptop (160W I think?) and the M1 Max destroyed the RTX 3080 when unplugged by about 300%! I mean, that's the real feat here... no Windows laptop can match these when unplugged which is mostly why I'd get a laptop plus it's doing so with an integrated GPU, through emulation. So the biggest issue right now is software. These M1 Maxs are the best hardware you can get for a laptop currently by far. Apple announced this spring they are hiring big time for their gaming department, so maybe going forward things will improve on that front... though I still wouldn't buy a Mac primarily for gaming, though I do it all the time on my 2015 iMac (which I work on 8 hours a day) and can play Shadow Of Tomb Raider nicely at medium settings, and this game is a AAA title that came out years after I bought my iMac (I also play other AAA games like Dying Light, Borderlands 2 and 3, Hitman 2016... granted not the absolute newest games but they all look amazing and a great game is still a great game. Even Batman Arkham City plays smooth as butter on my old iMac and it came out in 2013 I think? But still looks better than many of the new games out in 2020.)
This whole thing has shown how much intel has been resting on their laurels. These mobile chips have been exponentially progressing over the last decade and have passed up everything.
Just wanted to take a moment to thank you for your thorough, thoughtful review. In this case, I've already ordered my machine, so this review just whetted my appetite, but your reviews have helped me make many purchasing decisions in the past. You've got the technical skills of a coder and the social skills of a non-coder 😉 I appreciate your hard work and sunny demeanor.
Thanks for this great review. No doubt this is best Macbook pro , hut I'm deducting 1 point off, for lack of USB type A port. It's the pro model. It should give as much support as it could
Rarely or probably never I've been so hyped by a review about a product I wasn't looking into for any reason. Always stellar content and so well made. Keep up the good wrok!
Haven't cared much about games since the early 2000's tbh, not since I bought games as a young lad for a lot of money to see it riddled with bugs. And that's still the case. :) Really having trouble keeping my wallet closed for these.
It's interesting that Apple never admits when they screw up:- no useful ports on a Pro, a stupid Touchbar (or whatever it was called) etc. I hate trackpads so a USB A port would have been nice. My son shoots video and often has to copy the files to his laptop when driving back from a venue so at last the card reader is back do that without a damn dongle. Oh, and they successfully ported an iOS 14, iOS 15 bug to Big Sur and probably Monterey. (It's in CGPDFDocumentRef and it's been unfixed for more than a year, thank you Apple scumbags.) BTW, have you seen Snazzy Labs review? Stupid crap Apple with the notch and the app's menu being always top screen instead of being attached to the app window as in Win and Linux. That's was fine when monitors were small but now it's just a pain.
No idea why you bought a Mac with all that hate? Every company makes bad calls or mistakes, I can list 1000's of MS/Windows and that includes the dumpster AKA W8! You seem to be part of the iHate Apple in-crowd. Just do not buy this magnificent piece of tech if you cannot stand Apple!
The 14" M1 Max is by far the most pleasant laptop I've ever had the pleasure of using, and that's coming from someone who builds high-end PCs for productivity and gaming. Good riddance to Jony Ive and his obsession with thinness. These MacBooks are insanely fast and efficient, and are priced surprisingly competitively for the professional market. Best device Apple has ever released.
@@nnnnnn3647 He worked with (not for) Apple as a part of his company to develop the iMac 2021, which of course was form of function, although being a consumer product, that's fine, but it looks like a mess with the white bezels and the huge chin together. And the RAM cap is less (16 GB vs 32 GB) and the port selection became really bad. Thank goodness that this poor port selection and design choices appear to be for their "consumer" models and not for their "professional" models, which really don't have many problems (apart from that notch not being optimized in macOS according to Quinn Nelson / Snazzy Labs).
@@cameronbosch1213 Nelson makes money from clickbait. What he showed can be set in the system without any problem. That's why I don't like these types of channels on YT. They conduct disinformation. The white bezel and chin are a very good design for a home computer.
Not sure the thickness would ever be considered a “gotcha”. Everyone has been complaining about MBP’s being too thin and losing ports for years. The thickness is a welcomed change.
@@whitemailprivilege2830 I'd rather have a thicker machine that's still thinner than most gaming laptops and about as powerful as one and has much better battery life and thermal performance. The 2016 - 2020 MacBook Pros were dead-ends, and I'm glad to see Apple reverse course on them.
This device is pure magic. Part of me wishes it had the option for a touch screen and was more user upgradable, but besides that it’s a tech masterpiece.
Thanks Lisa. Impressive laptops. Looking forward to your review of the 14.2" version. Btw, the SSD storage is technically separate from the SoC (system on chip), but your point that it can't be upgraded later holds true. The RAM is integrated though, pretty unique.
‘It runs on unicorn farts’ is the best comment I’ve heard from any reviewer! 😆 Best all round review of the new 16” too. Lisa never disappoints 👏🏽👍🏽👊🏽🙏🏽
I use Safari on my 2016 MB Pro 13" and... Oh right, it just gets stuck in infinite crash loop and never starts up. Buuut, I use it for Lightroom editing and lose 60% battery in half hour. 🥳 And 1% per hour lid closed. 🥳🥳 Every system update has made the machine worse and worse, both battery and performance. Back to Windows for me. 😂
Hi! I just discovered your channel today through this video, and I LOVE this review! You explain everything so well and are fair in your comparisons. One thing I also really like is that there's no background music, at least not on this video. I always find that distracting and annoying, so I'm really happy I can just focus on your voice and what you're saying about these laptops. I ordered the cheapest 16" almost two weeks ago and I think I made the right decision-so excited for it to arrive! I'll definitely stick around to watch some of your other videos!
Hi Lisa, very happy to have found your channel, I love your reviews, I have a ROG laptop and saw your review on it. I was almost ready to order a new laptop, I was contemplating ordering an Apple MacBook pro with the M1Max CPU. Looking at youtube reviews, I came across your review, "No Crisis, maybe Minecraft?" LOL and the "running on unicorn farts" hahaha killed me, love your channel already and subbed immediately, Thank you P.S. I might just stick with my upgraded laptop and maybe buy a Macbook pro with the M1PRO CPU.
Thanks for your review. I’ll admit the notch surprises me a bit. I suppose one gets used to it, just like the iPhone models since 2017. But I honestly don’t know why a notch should exist if we will continue to find ways to “hide” it by lowering the upper bezel. Sure, a 1080p FaceTime camera is good, but Apple could have done the same with a thinner, but uniform, upper bezel.
I have both 16-inch Macbook Pros, one pre-order M1 Max 16in, 32GB ram 32 core GPU with 10 core CPU and one 16in M1 Pro with 16GB ram and 16core GPU and 10 core CPU, both are 1 TB hard drive. I have asked the same question over and over. Battery life, so I ran them both side by side for 4 hours straight and ran the same 8K video streams through youtube on both and 360 degree 5K video for an hour. RU-vid music videos for an hour and a half and Apple TV movie in 4K for an hour and a half, for a total of 4 hours. They both started at 100% and after 4 hours of identical usage, the Max was at 75% and the Pro at 77%. Basically on the energy usage table under the battery, icon, with that kind of average use, the Pro would reach 16hours on battery and the Max 15 hours and 37 minutes. If this proves to be true as I will run them again tonight for another 4 hours non stop to see if the figures remain consistent, but I have a sneaky suspicion that the lower the battery the faster it will drain even though the the energy graph claerly showed a 16 hour and 15 hour 37 minute battery life for Pro and Max respectively.
I have yet to run out of battery while doing Java/ReactJS/Python development with multiple Docker containers running and a database. After 6 hours I was still at 76%. So if your a developer you might actually get pretty close to 14-16+ hours. I will have a chance to try it actually over the next few days. The Macbook also works well with a Dell Thunderbolt dock and it will charge fine with it also for anyone who might need to know.
I have to say it. Your videos are what I look for when looking for reviews. No fancy stuff, no colored backgrounds or fancy shots. Just pure and plain review. Also you’re a lovely lady, I can see you being like a kind mum/grandma.
