I’ve bought the 16” version and I absolutely love it. First MBP was bought in 2015, second the touch bar model in 2018. 2015 model felt like a tank, a real professional tool, loved it. 2018 Touch Bar model was really nice, but had lost the “tank like feel”, felt flimsy and I hated the keyboard. This is a real return to what a MBP should be, an absolute tank of a machine that you can depend on. I’m a web developer so don’t need blistering performance, I just need a workhorse. The MagSafe charging is a real unexpected bonus, one of the USB ports broke on my touch bar model. This feels like it’s been designed by engineers, not designers. (No offence to designers, design is very important).

We received those at work last week and I migrated all my workflows and data to it. It is a fantastic machine, and I think that, as a keyboard snob, it’s the best laptop keyboard I have played with for a long time. I also like the simplistic aesthetics of the case and the thickness. The screen panel is really the best thing I have looked at and coding on such a platform is a real joy.

As a MacBook owner who holds on to them for 5-6 years before handing them down to family, I wonder what your thoughts are on future proofing these new MacBooks related to pro vs max, graphic cores, unified memory, and SSD sizing? I would not be concerned if the ports get new versions or Face ID is added in future MacBooks.

Glad Dave mentioned "Most people don't need it", we need more tech reviewers like you making sensible suggestions instead of pushing people to the newest and greatest. I have seen so many people with top end MBPs but use them like Chromebooks.

40?! I know that’s not actually all that old, but you look so much younger. Edit: On another note, I really appreciate the more down to earth approach to reviewing these, and that unless you have a clear need/use-case for these tools that you shouldn’t buy them. Sounds obvious, but sometimes you get caught up in all the hype and just want it to have it, so you really helped me decide I don’t actually need one. I do video edit and use many Adobe products, but seeing as how the MacBooks aren’t specifically better in that regard than a top end windows machine kinda pushed me off the fence. I do seriously enjoy the Apple aesthetic, but not for that price.

I love that we have found the limits of thin and are moving back towards a functional thickness that respects thermal management / port selection as being important for the consumer.

The "you don't need this" at the end is so true! I have a 16" Intel MBP that's nearly fully speced, and I had no intentions/still have no intentions on upgrading this generation. I use my MBP for music production, and photography. I do sometimes feel the need to upgrade, especially if I'm making a large photoshop project, or exporting 100 Tiff files or making a crazy experimental song, but that just doesn't happen enough, and it doesn't impede my life enough to make it worth the upgrade. It does get annoying, but it probably happens a handful of times a month, and might save an hour or two throughout the year. The $4-5k I'm saving by not buying a new MBP is definitely worth the wasted time.

This is why I fucking love dave so much, the ending message can really sway somoene's dumb decision of blowing their money on this machine but have no REAL use for it. Apple always seems to have a cult following for their high end devices with people instantly cashing in, and your message was just a reality check in my opinion. Its great hardware, but its a tool at the end of the day. Stay the same dave, we love you for this

Hey, Dave, enjoyed the review especially your honest comment about how outrageously expensive they are. I'm due for an upgrade and I'm looking at a loaded 16" about $4200. What I love is how well they are built. I actually still use a Macbook Pro 17" loaded and upgraded with an SSD, but, it's time to move on because the OS is getting real old on this one. My 17" was also loaded. I paid $3500 for it, years ago. The way I justified it, then, was Boot Camp. I have a lot of Windows software (to replace the software would be expensive) so, I do a lot of video/audio rendering on the Windows side with Vegas and Sound Forge Pro and other tools. For the reason of performance, I did not go virtual with Parallels and just used the MAC as a Windows computer booting into it and it's been great. I also don't like how the new Parallels is a subscription, so, to create a Windows virtual out of Parallels, I'd have to pay $100 a year forever and when the price goes up, even more, just for the privilege of using my Windows virtual. So, my question is, all this mentioned, I justified the large expense of the Mac 17" because it was 2-computers in 1. I didn't need a 2nd high end Windows computer. Now, if I buy the new MAC, obviously I have to deal with Parallels and a subscription, which sucks, but, here's the dealbreaker. Will Parallels give me the performance in virtual running intensive programs like CAD, Vegas, Sound Forge, etc. or will I be disappointed. I even have old Adobe software I bought when it was sold that still works great. So, will I be disappointed in virtual running those kind of programs or will I also have to consider replacing all that older software which really makes this a dealbreaker. What do you think? I really don't want refurbished, but, I guess I could find a loaded 16" with that intel processor that would last several years, too. Or, I could just say, "see ya later" and just buy a loaded Dell XPS 17" or even a Dell Workstation model and it will run all my Windows stuff and just move on? What do you think? No matter what I do, I am going to have to run some Windows programs. I just have too many programs in Windows to just replace everything and go MAC, but, I do love Final Cut and having both operating systems and the benefits of syncing with IPAD, a phone and all of that but, the prices are just insane. The other thing that is so frustrating is the older Macbook Pro 17" was fully upgradable. It didn't come maxed out on RAM or with an SSD and I was able to get in the game for $3500 and upgrade the machine, later on. With the memory not being able to be upgraded anymore, you have no choice but to go all the way when you buy it. After all, I don't want to get 16gig ram or 32gig ram or a 500gig hard drive and then kick myself because I can't uprade it and have to buy a new computer. Really sucks they way they design them so they cannot be upgraded later. If you buy a new car and you want to add an accessory or upgrade the stock OEM tires, you can. But, not on a MAC. Anyway, your thoughts appreciated.

One more truthful and straight to the point review, also very denser information of a video. Truth to be told, pretty much all the bleeding edge, latest and greatest are beyond what 90% of the whole population need. Heck even a chromebook may suffice a majority of our computing needs.
