It can be so challenging to know whether or not your baby or toddler is meeting their developmental milestones. In this video, I walk you through the Ages and Stages Questionnaire (ASQ-3) for 16 month old babies and toddlers. The Ages and Stages Questionnaire is research based and used by hospitals and state programs around the world. In short, it is an excellent way to measure the growth and development of your child. I also explain how to score your child, to help you identify any areas of concern. As a parent, it was important for me to know where my child needed additional support. The Ages and Stages Questionnaire was very helpful to me in figuring out developmental activities for my 16 month old!

Gross = 60 Communication = 25 Fine Motor = 45 Problem Solving = 40 Personal - Social = 30 15.5 months and I suddenly just got curious so I thought I would look into it. Good to have a guide somehow so we know where to focus more.

Gross Motor: 60 Fine motor: 45 Problem Solving: 60 Personal-Social: 60 Communication: 30 I’m actually getting more and more worried as my 16month old grows because she doesn’t say even a word yet, which is why we only got 30 on communication. Her receptive is excellent but I’m getting a bit worried on expressive language ☹️ Other than this I see that she’s growing on the right track. Thank you so much for this video 🥰

Those other scores are AMAZING! Sounds like she is quite the little mover and problem solver! Definitely talk to your pediatrician about a speech consultation if you are worried. Speech language pathologists are AMAZING and make such a huge difference! (I love the one I work with at my elementary school!)

I know many kids who started speaking after 4-5 yo (my sisters, or their classmates) many are top students (but their parents did a lot immediately after they started speaking, like reading, and appropriate games (just don’t give them RU-vid or TikTok for 10 h/ day) Every child is different )

I’ve been worried about my son for months. He’s been in early intervention for 7 months. He is 16 months now and just had this asq during his IFSP review. My son had a left hand preference from early on. He had an mri to check his brain but it came back normal. They did see some prominent fluid in his ventricles but the neurologist at one of the top hospitals in the country said he wasn’t concerned with it at all. I did the asq again using your guide and it still frustrates me bc some of these things I just don’t think to do with my child so I have to answer no. Gross: 10 (however he does cruise holding on and is attempting to walk all of the time. He takes anywhere from 5-8 steps and then falls) Communication: 35 Fine MS : 45 Problem solving : 30 Personal / social: 20 The unknown is so hard. He’s so social and is a huge cuddler. He smiles at me all the time and loves songs and playing with his siblings.

My son is also 16 months and the same way with walking. He can stand up and walk a bit but he’s much more comfortable with crawling and cruising. And I agree some stuff I just haven’t done with him like drawing/using crayons we haven’t done so I don’t even know if he can do it. This stuff is so hard.

@@JonasBrosGirl my daughter is the same way, and we haven't done all these things yet. Sometimes i think oh you're just a little baby still you don't have to do anything yet. But I took her to doctors to see if she was suffering any illness and they said no. The state learning center come to my house to evaluate her and then said she thinks she's fine. It's so easy to overreact. When I heard the state was coming to my house I went home and I made her walk that day being very pushy with her. I shouldn't have.

I’m really starting to think that the communication low scores in these comments could be because of the pandemic. Not being around other children (daycare) or being home with full time working parents. My daughter is 16 months and hit really great scores accept communication. Anyway, she will be starting daycare in a few weeks. I’ve had HELP ME GROW and went to speech therapist they both say she’s fine and to “wait” so we shall see how daycare helps!

I hear there is a very low percent of 16 month olds that already know 10 words. I personally started saying mama at 18 months. My daughter is 17 months now and she still doesn’t say mama. She babbles a lot though! Some babies that we hang out with still don’t communicate at 3 years old! I don’t know, it seems like a problem that majority of babies deal with today
@GinnyBeeEdD
@GinnyBeeEdD 2 года назад
What I like so much about the ages and stages questionnaire is that that is literally just one line item within the communication category! So, if a child is not saying 10 words yet, it can be completely developmentally normal and just fine!
@jessicaclay7204
@jessicaclay7204 2 года назад
Sadly children should be speaking pretty well at 3 and if they're not, it could be as simple as they (and maybe even their guardians) are shy-- or their guardians are not speaking to them NEARLY enough and encouraging their communication skills. If it's the latter, it's sad....

My nephew`s communication score is 10. His parents say his communication skills are on par with babies his age (16 months). Are babies generally getting dumber or is it just the parents scared to accept that the baby is not developing properly? He can`t say dada/mama. The only thing he can say is "ba". He doesn´t imitate sounds/words.
@GinnyBeeEdD
@GinnyBeeEdD Год назад
I think some parents fear they did something "wrong" if their child is a little developmentally behind. To get help is to admit they need some support. I wish more knew, however, that being proactive is nothing but awesome for your little one!

@leilanigrace2498
@leilanigrace2498 2 года назад
Your explanation on scoring is contradicting. You first say “any number above the cut-off number means the child is on track”. You later add a second number labeling it as “close to the cutoff” ,providing a window, and say “anything above those numbers mean you are on track and shouldn’t worry”. Therefore Contradicting what you earlier said. So for example, you said 37 is the cutoff for gross motor but you’d want your child at least at 47. Anything above 47 you shouldn't worry. However, the cutoff number is 37 (not 47) and initially you said we shouldn’t worry above the CUT-OFF number (meaning 38,39,40)... So which is it???
@GinnyBeeEdD
@GinnyBeeEdD 2 года назад
It means that in terms of the clinical screener, there is nothing categorically “wrong” until you fall below the cutoff score. I simply mention that if your child scores CLOSE to the score that you may want to ask your pediatrician, because I’m an advocate for early intervention. The screener itself also specific recommends at home activities if you are very close to the score. However, only your child’s pediatrician will know the specific situation of your child and how to proceed.

I am scared. My son isn’t meeting many of these milestones. Not walking properly at 16 months but he is a climber. As in, he will climb 6 feet chair. He makes About 5-6 steps and he falls on his butts. No words either.
@GinnyBeeEdD
@GinnyBeeEdD 2 года назад
Score each skill based on whether or not he can do them. If you answer yes, give it 10 points, sometimes, give it 5 points, and not yet, 0 points. The total cutoff score is 37 points. Don’t panic though! Interventions are there to help!

@GinnyBeeEdD
@GinnyBeeEdD 2 года назад
I definitely see that frustration with my daughter too! Maybe try a simpler puzzle until he builds confidence! (Circle puzzles are easier, for example!) Sometimes little ones go through periods of growing rapidly in one area and kind of “focusing” on that. If he’s still behind in communication at your next pediatric visit, however, bring it up! I had to be proactive with my second daughter, too!

Yes, let's take the natural development of a child and quantify it so as to turn it into yet another competitive, anxiety-inducing project for obsessive parents who'll end up harming their children with the sheer pressure to perform. How about you start building their college applications at 16 months too - you can never start too early!

LOL agreed. I have two daughters right now. One will be 5 years old in 2 months and the other is 15 months old. On my first, some moron, just because her daughter was autistic, convinced my mother that my soon-to-be 5-year old MUST be evaluated because, at 16 months, she was only using two words and was mildly toe walking. My mother nagged me for a whole year about this just because this woman was a “mental health professional “ also (as unprofessional as it was for her to opine without our input at a dinner party) while I knew in my heart everything with my child was fine. After she turned two was when she really blossomed with speech and interaction. Now, she doesn’t toe walk at all and is highly social, interactive, and communicative. No intervention needed. I just let her be who she is and to get to where she needs to on her own. None of those supposed milestones she supposedly wasn’t meeting before two years of age made any difference. I feel that nowadays because so many people are taking this whole “assessment” stuff seriously and about 25-30% of kids are actually diagnosed with something before turning two, people are volunteering their opinions on this stuff so more children are in some kind of intervention program so that THEY don’t feel behind. I still get these videos on my feeds since my mother did everything to make me worry on my first, but now, on my 15-month old, I’m totally chill. She will do whatever she needs to do when she’s ready and there is nothing she absolutely should or shouldn’t be doing. These standards for how children should be behaving are actually culturally arbitrary and most people outside the western world don’t follow these. So yes, instead save up for college or for a child opening their own business when they turn 18 years of age and not for all this intervention at 18 months of age. Moral of the story: your kid is not a retard. Yes, I said it. They just need to be who and what they are now. Respect where they are and don’t try to push them ahead before they are even out of diapers.
