Once your baby discovers they can walk while holding your hands, they'll never want to stop! This might be a fun activity for your baby, but it's not the best way to teach them how to walk.
In this video I'll give you 3 alternative activities which will help your baby learn to walk. I will also show you a better way to hold your baby if they insist on walking with your help.

Baby is not walking independently yet, but he uses the push walker and also cruises on the furniture, he moves from a furniture to another and this week he did his first steps letting go 😊 we are really exited to see him. We don’t give him both hands to walk in the room, he reaches out for one hand and likes me to walk by his side. I make sure he doesn’t walk on his toes and uses the whole feet, not sure if this is ok though.

Thank you for sharing. Our second son is 15 months and has a habit of throwing himself down when having a tantrum. And no interest in walking. He is beginning to stand, some but scoots and crawling very little. He is a big boy and prefers to be held as she has suggested. It’s quite a workout 😅

My son is just 16 months old and not walking yet. He was born with severe hip dysplasia and had to wear a hip splint for several weeks. He hit basically all of the gross motor skill milestones way later than "normal" because of this treatment. But his hips are healthy now and our pediatrician never had any concerns that something would be wrong with him. Of course we also asked about his walking, but here the doctor still gives him time until he is 18 months old. And we as parents really try our best to not force our child into an activity he is not ready for yet. I have experienced the strange looks from other parents with kids of similar age - this sometimes gives me the feeling I have to justify why my son is not walking yet. But what they do not see are his other skills! That my son is great with talking, curiously repeating whatever words sound interesting to him. So I encourage myself and also other parents with kids "behind" any milestone - this is no competition, our children are great and will hit the milestones when THEY are ready. Be confident.

For the last two weeks he has been taking 2 steps independently several times 3 times a day. I brought him around his walking cousins that are both 1 yrs old for the weekend and he increased to 5 steps. He keeps reverting back to crawling though.

As you stated, hand holding is a fun activity. It's easier to bend a little than all the way down to grip their belly, so it can be done for longer periods of time. I used the hand gripping method for leg strengthening and endurance. We'd do circles around the house to wear him out for bed. He had plenty of other opportunities learning balance and foot placement. He was walking by 10 months beautifully.

Thanks! Bubs is 8 months and is pulling up to stand. We hold him by ribs or fingers sometimes but he usually holds himself up. He does get worried when he wants to come down and start to whimper, but we just sit near to him and talk him through it, and he does surprisingly well! I’m so glad we have carpet (even though it’s not trendy); so if he falls it’s cushioned. 😅

Hi. Your videos are useful. Thank you for yout hard work :) Just here to say push walkers are not for every baby. Ma baby stood up at 7,5 month and started walking holding on to furniture since 9 montg old. On the meanwhile he was crawling a lot too, standing and walking with support. At almost 1 year old he made first few steps be himself and then asker for our hand. Considering how long he have been standing and walking beside furniture we help him walk. We tried push walker which was a catastrophy as he dod not let me help him to control and not pushing it to everythinv, and avoiding falling. If I let him and he fell he bocome upset. So pusha walker did not work for us. Couple of days ago we started to ask him to walk to us, we were just couple of steps away. We play this game onky 3 days and now he started to walking more and more by himself. Semm he just needed to get confident, but to be honest I dont think I did something wrong giving him some support when he asked for it :)

I am so glad I clicked because I just started letting my baby grab my index fingers to take steps and I saw she was walking quickly and on her tip toes. I felt like she was trying to keep her balance, but i didn't know what method to use because everyone kept telling me, "you need to get her a walker" over and over.. i knew i didn't need one, but I finally broke and got a walker and I push trolly. I see that she wants to walk very much because when she crawls she takes her foot to step forward almost like lunges but she just drags herself forward and switches legs.. if you can imagine that.. I wanted to help her, so I walked laps around the coffee table with her holding her hands when she wants to play until she flops down on her bottom when she wants a rest 😂 She is 8 months, pulling herself up on everything, even my legs sometimes even standing on her own support when she thinks she's grabbing me but it's actually just my pant leg (I have my hands ready to steady her if it's needed, but for the most part, she catches and steadys herself well. On her own, she taught herself how to move around the sectional, because she is curious about everything. She steps over my legs to attempt to get to what she wants. She has taught me to be vigilant when there is a beverage near! Lol She's ahead of her milestones, and as a first time mom, I am very proud of that I feel truly blessed, now I want to educate myself more on childhood development so I can encourage her better and not set her back by mistake 😅. I love that you said holding the baby by there hands while they walk is good playtime, but not for walking development. I will allow her to do more of the correct exercises that she is already doing. Ps. This was a late night post and I was falling asleep so I hope was able to keep some kind of sentence structure. I'm falling asleep. Thanks for posting

Top tip don't hold both their hands they do get reliant on that you can feel that when you do it, they directed you because they want you to bring them places which is pretty clever. Hold one hand and switch hands and let go (safely, when balanced) often. They will swing and lose balance but they need to do this. My baby was walking within a week of me doing this with her. She had no interest in walking by herself. I started walking her the last couple blocks to nursery (one handed) every day and all of a sudden she started running from table to chair. That was a couple months ago, she's really steady on her feet now.

His balance isn’t the best as yet, he is 14 months and 1 week. He’s a little behind in milestones but catching up, is there anything I can do to encourage him to let go ? or do we just wait to allow him to do it on his own? Thank you

Hi Angie it’s so great to hear your little one is up and walking with only minimal support. He has made huge gains over the past two months. Sounds like he is still building up his walking balance skills and wanting your hand for support. You could bring out a baby push walker (trolley) and help him walk pushing the trolley (you could hold the trolley steady initially or put a small weight in the front tray if it has one). If you don’t have a push walker then continue to provide his with support and he will get there.

My 4 month old is always trying to pull herself up to stand. If we give her our fingers to hold onto she can sit up and stand up easily. But when sitting she still falls over to the side if she isn't holding on to something.

My son is 9 months and has started cruising along furniture and loves using the push walker to go from one side of the living room to the other. What about helping them walk by only holding one of their hands? I would like to think that the other hand is still working on their balance, no? My little one at first wouldn't take steps with me only holding one hand but over time he has started getting more comfortable which I think it says he's getting closer and closer to taking steps on his own. If not, please let me know. Also, when i try to hold one of his hands I make sure not to pull his arms up in a weird position. I keep his arms lowered. Also I have sometimes provided my index finger for support out in front of him and not up above, would that be okay?

Hi Leticia holding one hand and keeping it down low would be ok. Sounds like he is getting close to walking independently!

Hello Emma my daughter got up on her own for the first time when she was 6 months old now she is in the first days of 8 months and she is doing great going around everyone at home i leave her in the living room and she comes to me when i call her in the kitchen walking intercepting for a chair, a sofa or even a door on the other side for the pushing walker when she is angry to push her she falls is not stable the plastic walker itself cannot withstand its weight also my mother advises me to empty her stability by giving her two videos one at a time in the crab and then to straighten her and hold her waiting for her stability and when she felt her let go she did this every day for a week and she started to stand completely independent the idea of the piles was to replace my hand for which she grabs to keep his balance!! Also huge thanks to you I think that without you we will not be able to great support I would only dream of such a pediatrician for my daughter!! 🥰🥰🥰👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Thanks Emma! Mine is great at pulling up on everything, plays standing up and cruises everywhere for quite sometime. However he’s not interested in walking. Doesn’t want to use the baby push walker. He’s not even interested in holding my hands to walk. He can’t stand up on his own yet. I guess I should just wait. He’s 12 months

Yep your right, oOnce your little one learns how to stand up on his own, he will start to lift one foot to take his first step. Still plenty of time to learn how to walk. Enjoy watching him cruise and play in standing - it's such a lovely time😁

@@annoniification he started walking at 16 months. He just did it on his own. Still totally normal. I just had to go at his pace. He did find interest in using the push walker before he learned to walk. They say crawling is so good for them so at least he got a lot of that in.

my mother and sister in law just reprimanded me for doing this with my almost _10 months old_ nephew... who is on the _very cusp_ of walking (super early, I might add!)... not bc of anything yr saying here, but because they were under the impression that it's *"dangerous"* "they're more likely to get *hurt* being held that way... you're supposed to hold him _under his arms,_ for safety reasons!" - which I probably would've done if he was 4 or months old, but he's gonna be walking ANY DAY now. they both reacted & essentially _lunged at me_ like I'd picked him up by the head or something! I'm looking it up, but I honestly can't figure out where tf they GOT that information, or if they made it up themselves, why on earth would they be under that impression?!??

Thank you so much. My baby girl is 15 months old. I am a little concerned about her as she hasn't started to walk all by herself. She does walk with support, cruises along the walls, furniture etc. Recently, she has started using walker. However, I am wondering when will she start to walk independently.
@EmmaHubbard
@EmmaHubbard Год назад
Hi Harleen it sounds like she is getting close to walking independently. It's great she has started using a push walker. This will help her further improve her balance and weight shifting skills which are required to walk. I think she just needs a little more time. But if you are concerned always check in with her doctor.

My daughter can walk when holding on to things she just turned 1. All she does is play in standing position she just crawls to get to a place to stand. She just started standing by herself a couple weeks ago but she will not try and take a step she gets scared and will sit down. She used everything as a push walker as long as she’s touching something she’ll walk but the second I make her let go she stops and sits how do I get her to take those first few steps? I know she can walk by herself she just doesn’t know that yet

My baby is about a year and a half old. He is capable of walking but he has a fear of walking independently. Unfortunately we did not give him much belly time and we put him in one of those walkers for too long. Now when he attempts to walk on his own, he wants to lean back and stop walking. How can I help him overcome the fear of walking independently? We know he's capable because as long as somebody is somewhat within reach he will try to reach them

Hi Emma i have been following your videos and they are really really helpful. Though am a second time mommy each baby is different. My LO is 14 month old he gets on a sofa, bed gets down from backside by himself. He catches table sofa etc and stands for a longer time but has not started to walk or stand independently without support. Any idea how long does it take and is he reaching his milestone? ?

It’s so nice to hear you have found this channel helpful💕 Unfortunately, I can’t say when your little one will start walking. It sounds like he is getting close if he is able to stand independently and cruising well. Generally most bubs start walking by 18 months of age. So I would expect that he might be walking before then. If you have a baby push trolley then that would be good to get out for your little one to use to increase his confidence.

Hi! I’m referring to 2 different things in those videos. I recommend the push walker (the ones they stand behind and push), those are great. But I do not recommend the walkers that babies stand inside.

Hi Emma, I would recommend having the push walker present for every wake period during the day and let him choose how often and long he wants to use the trolley.

Hi Laarni holding one hand is ok as you don’t tend to be giving your little one a lot of support to walk around (more reassurance).
