IF actually worked great for about 3 months, then noticed my body really adapted, became very efficient with the lower total calories, so I lowered calories even further wanting the effects to continue, and I ended up really messing up my metabolism. Reached a point where I was almost afraid to eat, and when I did, then I couldn't stop and would just eat until I felt sick. In the process now of trying to restore some normalcy to my relationship with food, not be afraid to consume wholesome real food, and bring my metabolism back to life.

I personally don't use IF/Fasting as a weight loss tool...in fact, I've reversed dieted my way up to 3100 cals from 1800 all while eating in an 8 hour window and fasting for 16 hours. I train in a fasted state at 5 AM and I've put on 10 solid pounds, gotten significantly stronger, and gained minimal fat (using MAPS Anabolic, I might add. Strong is next.).I eat a balanced diet of protein, carbs and fat. No special Keto diet or anything like that...just whole foods (no processed, no sugar). I fast because I enjoy letting my digestive system recover and recuperate! *TO ME* it just makes sense to allow our bodies time to process and the food we put into it. I also fast because i have RA and it helps greatly with my inflammation. Twice a month, I do a 24 hour fast! Last but not least, it's a spiritual thing as well. Not to get too deep, but I've found that when I pray and meditate in a fasted state, my mind, heart and body are clear and I can really tap into a state of peace MUCH EASIER than I can when my body is attempting to break down food. Simply put, it is a lifestyle for me...I'm on my 4th year of this, just in case anyone doubts the sustainability of it.

I've been intermittent fasting for a few years now. It works great for me. I have a 5 hour eating window Monday-Saturday and I take a complete break from food Saturday night through Monday morning to take advantage of the benefits of autophagy. I workout Monday through Friday in the mornings and my Monday morning workout is awesome on an empty stomach. My focus and energy feel like they are increased soo much. I went from 350lbs to currently 205lbs. I'm 6'1" and have 15% body fat. I swear by it if you want to lose weight but you will also lose strength. Even though I'm constantly complimented on how "big" I look, I can't lift as much as people might expect. As long as you enter this type of diet with the right mind set that you're going to lose not only weight but also strength and not get discouraged by it then I think you'll be successful. Once I get down to between 10%-12% body fat I'm thinking about beginning a bulk by adding a small evening meal of lean protein and veggies and start gearing my training more towards strength gains instead of weight loss. Thanks for all the awesome content gentlemen!!

I’ve lost 60+lbs from an 8hr window of eating. The biggest couple things I noticed are how always starting eating at the same time helps me adjust to time zones, strength gain from eating more efficiently (more nutritious foods), and less joint pain / less swelling. Mentality of discipline helps, and a work smarter not harder mentality.

It’s two years old podcast but pumped to my feed so I was listening it and I am the one who swore for the fasting and also IF. I still actually big fan of one water day and do it sometimes, but I stepped of from the Intermittent fasting train. It was totally by accident and not occasionally even planned. I skipped breakfast but then I decided to go to the gym early in the morning and I had an idea that I should eat something after the training and then I started to eat breakfast and like that went from two meals to three and I started to feel more satisfied from the meals. Always while doing intermittent fasting after lunch although I did eat big meal I didn’t feel satiated and would of always just eat more but I just simply ended my window. Ok fasting after that was quite easy for me but still I did not feel 100 % that it’s the right. Now I don’t do this anymore. Eat a lots of protein, like to have my breakfast, lunch AND dinner and I am happy.

According to Dr. Longo, “If you look at the people who consistently do 16-18 hours/day of fasting, the gallstone operation rates go-up twofold.”. He recommends the more extended time-restricted eating diets (over 12 hours/day) only for short periods of time (a couple of months, at most). He does, however, recommend 12/12 time-restricted eating for many people, as a long-term practice. Also, he stated that multiple epidemiological studies showed that people who skip breakfast experience a shortened lifespan. Not a causal effect, but there’s certainly an association.

Love this episode boys!!! Everyone is different and I think Adam said it best that different forms of IF and fasting is a TOOL! My favorite way to use it is the TRF or time-restricted feeding schedule. Keeps me from eating too close to bed because if my stomach is full or I have indigestion, I’ll sleep poorly and my 2 a day trainings will be awful. In the morning after my first workout I find that focusing on hydration and taking a shower helps me in recovery for the next training and in my digestion of my first meal. And helps me take a massive dump tbh. Don’t like eating till I drop that morning log. Love u guys 🤘

Excellent discussion, guys. This isn't talked about enough as I find most people are all over the "Fasting" train. Let me preface this with: yes, I broke my fasts in a nutritionally appropriate way and kept refeeding caloric intake at or above my personal maintenance range. I fell for this fad previously, despite having a sports nutrition background. With daily intermittent fasting - I developed something called Rapid Gastric Emptying (aka instant flood gates after eating) as well completely lost my reproductive cycle. I developed refeeding syndrome - hunger hormones would NOT STOP FIRING. The RGE forced me into having several deficiencies which just kept the shit ball rolling down hill. Did I lose weight? Yep! Did I lose muscle? Oh fuck yeah! Was it worth it? Absolutely not. Would I do it again? Not unless I'm forced to by gun point. It took a solid year just to get my hormones back into the normal "range". The RGE finally ceased after 7 months of eating normally. I have since been able to GAIN muscle beyond what I thought possible - thanks to eating normally! Everyone running around touting fasting as being SAFE to do is ignorant and blinded by the shiny promises of an "eAsY wAY tO lOsE wEiGhT". 🤪 It's not safe. It's not even recommended, medically, unless you have a medical condition where the benefit of fasting could out weigh the plethora of dangers. ✌🏻 Stay safe out there, everyone. These fads are getting crazy.

I am a big fan of IF even though it is difficult as a hardgainer. I love the energy and focus benefits I get from IF. I can get so much done at work in my first 4 - 5 hours if I IF... because of this I IF Monday - Friday and on the weekend I just eat when hungry. When I first started it I had a hard time maintaining weight and muscle. It took me a while to figure out how to do it successfully. However, if I want to gain any mass I typically have to reduce my fasting window. Its all a balance you have to figure out for yourself.

I am a longtime listener/viewer and love what you guys are doing in the fitness space. Keep it up! I agree with your general message in this episode, but do want to make a counter point regarding fasting to lose weight. I am currently following MAPS Aesthetic (I'm on the last week of Phase III) and eating in a deficit for the first time. Typically, I would eat 3000+ calories when in a bulk (I am 6'5, 192lb) and eat 3-4 meals a day, which is inconvenient in my busy work life. Now that I am cutting, I find between a 16:8 and 20:4 fast is a much easier way of limiting my calories than eating 3-4 smaller meals. I want to be clear that my food choices are still macro-centered; I am still hitting my macro targets when eating in that window. I have been eating a slight deficit (200-300 calories under maintenance) and high protein since the beginning of Phase 2, have dropped from 200lb to ~192, and feel stronger/have more endurance than before. My point is that fasting can be used as a weight loss tool when the individual has a healthy relationship to food, the food choices are healthy, and macro targets are being met. Keep up the great work gentlemen; I listen to you during my workouts and I'm always learning new things (and cracking up at your conversations).

The warrior diet helps me control my urges for refined sugar and carbs throughout the day. It also helps me focus on eating for a purpose instead of eating because I’m hungry, and training in a fasted state makes me appreciate the calories I take in after so much more and makes everything tastes better. It is in our DNA to eat this way no if and’s or buts

Ok take my comments back from the other IF video - this is a great video with lots of good information....you have gone from zero's to heroes on this topic. As for IF being a bad idea - I can tell you it is....only if you are on a non-Keto (or non-whole foods diet). If you eat regular carbs this could be a terrible idea as once that eating window opens and carbs go in, all hell is set loose! However, IF is extremely complimentary with the Keto diet! Once the eating window opens, if you are eating low carb it's generally very hard to eat junk. On your point of calories being too low....then this can be adjusted by changing IF patterns, so you can implement IF to basically skip dinner and breakfast and then eat again, or do Alternate Day Fasting and have 500 calories just before you start a fast. The benefits of IF are tremendous - I don't need any science to tell me how great it feels when fasting (towards the end though, the first 4-5 hours when you are fighting the Ghrelin/Gremlin hormone can be a battle), but after that it's easy! And the biggest benefit of this is.....training in a fasted state at the end of your workout and then breaking your fast, knowing whatever you take it is going to get sucked up by your body and straight into your muscles. Practicisiing Targeted Keto Diet (TKD) myself this is when I will sometimes take in 25g of carbs with some lean protein The bottom line is fasting is good in cleaning your body and also over time reducing the false hunger signals - you can go longer without eating. Of course for competitors this may not be optimal but for the everyday Joe (on a low-carb diet), it's a godsend!

I intermittent fasted most of my life mainly because I couldn't get myself to eat breakfast before school and my first meal would typically be lunch. But I also have a hard gaining weight/muscle due to not getting enough calories/protein during my day. It definitely has its perks and I am very lean but it also has its drawbacks.

23:36 I was super gassy for a long time. People would tell me I must be eating something that didn't agree with me. They would suggest dairy. I am Jewish and we don't eat meat and dairy together-separate dishes and pots and pans and everything. Sometimes have 3 day stints where we are in meat mode. So I knew that I was gassy during those 3 day stints. I was losing weight at one point so I was basically on an eliminatioin diet. It was usually fruit and greek yogurt for breakfast or soft boiled eggs. The rest of the time it was a LOT of chicken potatoes veggies, some salmon here and there. Because of this I was not eating cake, cookies, bread, rice etc because I was aiming for protein and fiber and micronutrients a lot of whole foods (this was 2011 before people talked about macros even). My stomach issues went away. I didn't notice it until one day they came back in full force. So I was sitting there, what the heck did I eat today that I haven't been eating. Well, I had a sandwich. So I googled "people who can't eat bread" and figured out I had a bunch of these symptoms (besides the gassiness). If I hadn't eliminated so many foods because I deemed them a waste of calories, I never would have been able to figure it out. I'd have been stuck at "It's not dairy."

I know they claim to know what fasting is that I still don't think they do. And I think it's because they're starting with the assumption that you're supposed to eat from sunup to sundown. Or you're supposed to indulge every time you want to put something in your mouth regardless of the drive behind the impulse. But what if you're literally only hungry twice a day? Or what if you like to eat most of your meals in the first part of the day but you don't like to eat later. What if you're satiated so much because you're on a carnivore diet. It's well established that you can train yourself to be hungry on any schedule. We've all experienced this. Let's say you get hungry at 8:00 a.m. everyday and that's when you eat your breakfast. But this particular morning you get really busy. You'll notice that the hunger subsides in about an hour. Because being hungry at 8:00 a.m. was largely out of habit and the hormone signaling around that habit. Or let's say you want to start eating your first meal at 10:00 instead. Just move it ahead a half an hour each day and by the end of the week you'll be hungry at 10:00 a.m. instead of 8:00 a.m.. So hunger is really controlled by hormone signaling, habit, and expectation. The fact that you can manipulate this so easy shows this to be true. This is why the idea of you shouldn't fast for weight loss really fundamentally doesn't make any sense because in a world awash with food, you can have virtually any type of food 24/7 delivered to your door, it's the people that take control over their hunger signalings and their eating habits that maintain their metabolic health and stay lean. So instead of seeing fasting as deprivation it should be viewed as actually restoring normal eating behaviors in a world saturated with cheap convenient calories that require no chewing and are hyper palatable.

I used meal timing to help me feel full while I lost my first 70 pounds. At the time, I called it intermittent fasting, but the helpful bit was helping me feel full while in a caloric deficit. Fasting isn't magic. Deadlifts are though.

Im not a hater, just have years of experience with fasting unlike yourself. Strange that you call on your vast experience to bring excellent content, then use studies without experience to criticise. The health benefits from fasting both mentally and physically are insane. Ive also gotten more shredded than ever whilst dieting from fasting. We have evolved to go through long periods without eating, bulking for months is a million times unhealthier. That's something as a race we have never done. When we give our digestive process a break we accelerate healing massively. Before fasting, i struggled to lose fat and build quality muscle. Now its a breeze at 50 and almost impossible at 30. Why?, i have a better hormone profile, better metabolic health, better metabolism and look much younger than all my friends who don't fast. I've fasted for years with the longest being 25 days. I lost minimal muscle but gained it back and then some in lightening speed. Everyone comments on how good i look at 50, despite being 28 stone when i was eating constantly. You put food into a stressed body and disease and illness is happening very quickly. Fasting strengthens every process in the body, as a survival mechanism, my mental strength is much, much stronger than before. Until you have experienced something it's not in your reality, that doesn't mean it can't happen to someone who has experienced it though. Something you should keep in mind. ❤

I think it depends on the person and if it’s going to exacerbate any behavior or emotional issue they may have with food or in general. Some people just don’t like breakfast. But using it as an extreme weight loss strategy can be dangerous. But if you can manage to get in appropriate nutrients even if in a small eating window and it doesn’t effect your relationship with food or dieting in general.

16:8 or even 18:6 are arguably not that extreme at all depending on your particular lifestyle and personal preference. A decent amount of people eat somewhat like that automatically most of the time without actively even trying to.

The main reason for fasting should foremost not be to loose wait, but to gain mind control to not just eat to eat. The human body unless performing at a very high output, does not require constant that much food throughout the day. Portion control over everything

Food and I have a love hate relationship. I love to eat junk food. I use maps aesthetic so I can eat doughnuts. I use fasting after eating 2 days worth of calories in one meal. That is the hate part. When I want junk I have to have it. I will then go on a 48 hour fast and it's a mental issue.

Elijah Muhammad taught his followers in the Nation of Islam to eat one-meal a day and fasting 72 hours every month for physical longevity decades ago. In the 90s I tried to combine this with Menzter’s Heavy Duty infrequent training (who also stressed lower caloric intake) - it didn’t work for me. I still fast periodically, but I’ve not seen anyone defy the normal limits of aging and health - period.

“Benefits from fasting are nearly identical to calorie restrictive diet” this is just false. Your metabolism drops like a rock with extended calorie restriction, studies have actually shown a drop in core body temperature(of about .7 C), along with decreased efficiency of organ processes. While on fasting there is actually an INCREASE in metabolism(albeit only up to 20% increase). Also your body releases a cocktail of hormones that increase your strength(this only happens after about 24 hours of fasting and beyond) such as norepinephrine, growth hormone, etc.

As far as I can remember I have seen my parents/grandparents fasting as a form of spiritual practice. It was done once or twice a week and it could be anywhere between 8 to 24 hours. There was also a kind of fasting where they would abstain from having salt. All food was prepared without any salt. As a kid there were some days I wanted to emulate them and they would allow me. I remember that the hardest one and one I could never do was to eat food without any salt. In my 20's I fasted once a week for 24 hours and I am in my 40's now and I fast once a week for 12 hours. The reason behind that is never weight loss but like you said it is a form of abstinence.

I think that a lot of the negatives are because people are overdoing it and not eating enough. And the fact that you are not that hungry means you can under-eat very easily. Personally OMAD is too much for me, could be great for weight loss, but I can't eat enough in one meal to maintain, and having more than 1 protein bolus is probably better for muscle protein synthesis, that's why most days I do 18:6, unless I haven't eaten enough in my first 2 meals and I am hungry outside my regular eating window.

I think I have an eating disorder. I'm in good shape, but I run and workout nearly everyday so I can eat more. I'm eating healthy, but if I don't get an extra ~750 calories down my gullet from working out, I have a hard time sticking to my diet. It also helps me hit my macros, protein in particular, but I'm afraid that's not the primary reason.

Im, fasting is the worse way someone would ever want to loose weight even though it is putting u in a deficit, rather an individual should be aware about the energy imbalance not that he or she has to starve themselves in order to lose weight, but fasting from a health perspective is rreally a brilliant thing one can do to improve their health and especially when it comes to focus or cognitive function as well, fasting done with zero calorie beverages like green tea or coffee or be it lemon water is not counted as fasting at all because it brings chnage in the ph level of ur body, while fasting one must make sure the only thing they are having is water or be it dry fasting- tremendous health effects, from improving gut issues, better for brain function, calming, teaches tolerance and patience, if fsating done right it is the best way one could ever be healthy instead of just focuing on weight loss and weight gain, moreover fasting has been shown to increase longevity too. #mindpump

I ate one meal a day for a long time in my teens through high school. It wasn't even on purpose, just habit, and it kept me from getting obese considering I was eating like shit. I didn't even know about intermittent fasting then, but I think it inadvertantly created a binging habit. I can eat 8000 calories without thinking about it, and even feel good the next day after a rough morning. My parents weren't slouches, but they didn't do a good job teaching me good eating habits. It's a hard habit to break, truly. I'd say it's a deeper instinct than sex. There are no shortcuts. I feel qualified to say that because I have made progress and it was hard, but there's still more to be done. I've learned to really enjoy the feeling of waking up the morning after a day of healthy eating and training. +1 to discipline gains
