Mary someone on another channel said that if you use oil in the measuring cup it would keep the honey from sticking, but not sure if this would effect the elixir! They only used a small amount! ☺️ I want to make tinctures!!! 😌
Miss Mary you are such an excellent example of a steward. You steward your knowledge in a way that is very pleasing to the Lord- because you take such great care of it. And then you pass it on to others.. I appreciate all of the links that you provide to the actual scientific studies on your website. May God richly continue to bless you.
I love the warning about checking with your medical professional. Of course it's a necessary disclaimer but laughable considering that most don't know squat about anything but pharmaceuticals. 😊
Just received your modern pioneer cookbook yesterday. Very nice cookbook. I just found your site & love your videos. I watched a marathon of your videos already. 🤗 thanks
I can't wait to make this! I'm in my 60s and grew up taking the B and B brandy (Benedictine and Benedictine liqueur) if we didn't feel well. To this day, I always keep a bottle, especially for winter aches and pains. Every time I take this, I thank Father Vincelli for his generosity just like my father did! It will be very interesting to see how this tastes! Thanks Mary for all you do!
I just set 4 tinctures going: echinacea root, anise (from one of your videos), mullein, and Russian olive leaf. I definitely will be making this 16th century elixer - I have the herbs coming in a few days and local honey from my daughter! Thank you so much for your so informative videos.
I'm enjoying your cookbook, Mary. It's wonderful. I wish Ball/Mason would bring back their old jars that had glass lids like the Weck jars. I have a small collection of vintage Mason jars (probably 60+ years old) that have glass lids and wire clamps that hold the lids in place. I've have run across them periodically in thrift stores and at flea markets through the years. This elixir would be a perfect project for those jars.
Hi Mary, I'm really enjoying your cook book! I bought one for a friend too and she is excited about making the sour dough starter. If you are considering a new book, I would love to see one on tinctures and herbal health remedies. Keep up the great work!
The "other" Heidi is from healing harvest homestead. There are many free things on her site, but her school is awesome too. Just like your book it is a great source of info and yes she studied under Rosemary Gladstar as well as others.
Mary, you are just too precious!! I love your channel!! You explain things so easily, it makes me feel like 'Yeah, maybe I can do this'!! LOL!!! Thank you Mary!! 🤗💞
Ms Mary I just want to say thank you so much for your knowledge and for sharing all the wonderful healing and delicious recipes with us. I cant wait to order your book and Im excited that you are so close to 1million subscribers . You definitely deserve it. Thank you again for your kindness ❤️
This is a great video, Mary! I will keep it in my "hope to do" list! I pulled out my Modern Pioneer book this morning and started a batch of yogurt! We have a local dairy farmer who produces A-2/A-2 milk and I'm having fun fattening up my dear husband! I eat whole milk yogurt for lunch a lot, and making my own will save us money❤
Love to try this elixir, but I am allergic to alcohol of all sorts. What should I use instead of alcohol, can I substitute with Apple cider or Apple cider vinegar? Thanks for sharing.
I would visit with Heidi over at Rain Country Homestead. She teaches how to make tinctures with glycerine and vinegar: www.youtube.com/@RainCountryHomestead Love, Mary
Hi, Mary, I've recently read where when you stir or serve honey, you should use a wooden utensil. Apparently using a metal utensil deletes the medicinal properties of honey. I haven't taken the time to research this information so I cannot say if it's true or not. Thank you so much for all you share with us, you are very much appreciated.
There are wives tales about stirring honey with a metal spoon but many sources that have researched this have found that there is no difference between using stainless steel or wood. Here is what the Sioux Honey Company says: "Myth. This is an old wives' tale that won't go away. While honey is acidic, scooping your honey with a metal spoon is such a quick movement that corrosion of the metal is unlikely. However, we do not recommend storing a metal spoon within your honey for long periods of time." You can read more here: siouxhoney.com/12-honey-myths-vs-facts/#:~:text=spoons%20with%20honey-,Myth,for%20long%20periods%20of%20time. Love, Mary
Hi Mary, I'm wondering which Angelica root you are using in this recipe as well as in your digestive bitters recipes from your book. I am unfamiliar with Angelica root and when I googled it 2 came up. The first was from Europe and it's Latin name is Angelica archangelica. The second is from China and it's Latin name is Angela sinensis. Great book by the way!! Thank you!
You are simply superb Ma'am! I have made few of your herbal recipes beside experimenting few of mine out of my homegrown herbs. Recently i made Mint wine ( other recent wines are Turmeric, Ginger, Gooseberry, Hibiscus, wine from concoction of turmeric, ginger and gooseberry and ginger mead ). Now will try your Herbal Elixir. May i use my Mint wine in place of vodka and lemon balm as my mint wine ABV is 12% and has strong flavour of mint??
Blessings Sweet Mary, from Chicago. I want to can fire cider ingredients as a pickle for eating. Can I use apple cider vinager to waterbath can? I love Fire Cider vegetables and herbs as much as I like the tonic.❤❤❤
I can’t speak to 40 proof or 190 proof because I follow the guidelines in the herb books I have by Rosemary Gladstar and she and other herbalist often recommend 80 proof. ❤️🤗❤️
80 is recommended yes because 40 isn't going to extract nutrients as well and 190 can be too strong for the more delicate herbs. I am a certified herbalist through Dr. Christopher's school of natural healing 😊
Yes, but you will be making something slightly different. I do not make elixirs or other herbal preparations with other liquids but Heidi at Rain Country Homestead does: www.youtube.com/@RainCountryHomestead Love, Mary
Thanks for sharing. Desk finally arrived but my brother would only let me bring one piece into the room. The other two are still sitting on the front porch.
@@MarysNest Probably when I get a place for the three of us. I found a metal house kit that meets our criteria. Just need to save up the money to purchase it. Nearly have what I need to start my next job. Just need the software. There are some lists of starter jobs I may try out first.
ok, I'm confused Mrs. Mary. At first you 1/3,1/3,1/3 then you said 1 cup, 1 cup, 1 cup. So, which do I do, I'm sorry, I just want to make sure I am doing it correctly. Thank you.
Where did you get that lovely tea ball?? Also, I made ACV for the first time & I'm concerned it's not quite right. The PH is 3.0 as you recommend...it just doesn't smell as strong as the store bought...is that normal?
Yes, that is usually normal. It will not be as strong as the store bought. If it's 3.0, it should be fine. As to the tea ball - I have had it a long time but I think they sell very similar ones on amazon. Just search stainless steel tea balls. Love, Mary
That's a great question. The amount of honey you add to a tincture can depend on personal taste. You can start with a 1/2 teaspoon of honey to 1 teaspoon of tincture and work up from there till you like the flavor. Love, Mary
@MarysNest Thank you for clarification. I was under the impression that in making using all ingredients at one time like you did, it would mean you need to have a certain amount of honey when using from a tincture. I hope this makes sense. So this means that if you make with all ingredients at once you wouldn't have to use a strict 1/3, 1/3, 1/3?? I am new to this so little nervous about changing proportions.
No, but there are a lot of other great recipes in my new book, The Modern Pioneer Cookbook. I learned about this after I wrote my book but I will certainly consider adding this to my next book. Stay tuned! Love, Mary
There are so many options when it comes to making herbal preparations. Research those that are related to colds and flu and you should definitely find reasonable options. (You don't need a lot to make this elixir, so even if you used these herbs, 1/3 cup should be affordable.) That said, a really great tincture to make is the one I shared a few backs - the Star Anise Tincture. And you should be able to find Star Anise at the grocery store.
