The bread-enclosed convenience food known as the "sandwich" is attributed to John Montagu, fourth Earl of Sandwich (1718-1792), a British statesman and notorious profligate and gambler, who is said to be the inventor of this type of food so that he would not have to leave his gaming table to take supper.
The earliest recognizable form of a sandwich may be the Korech or “Hillel sandwich” that is eaten during Jewish Passover. Hillel the Elder, a Jewish leader and rabbi who lived in Jerusalem during the time of King Herod (circa 110 BC), first suggested eating bitter herbs inside unleavened matzo bread.
Royal sandwich in Chennai is as per their name so Royal and they provide 170+ varieties of sandwiches. We tasted some of their signature dishes like Jumbo sandwich, Chicken panini, Paneer pitta, Focaccia, Club sandwich and Icecream sandwich.
Jumbo sandwich, to the name the bread size was jumbo than in layers. We ordered the combination of chicken and boiled egg. The mint chutney was too dominant to the chicken and the egg. It was a mouthwatering dish to begin with from Royal sandwich.
Pitta bread was to their name, a soft and thin bread stuffed with dominant flavors of tomatoes and onions with paneer. It was another mouthwatering dish from Royal sandwich.
Chicken panini was kind of normal dish that we had in Royal sandwich. Chicken was bland and it didn't gel with the bread perfectly.
Focaccia, a mix of African sauce, mint chutney, chicken and onion, it was too mouthful and so yummy dish.
An usual type of club sandwich that we regularly get from any sandwich shops. It was a decent dish in Royal sandwich too.
Icecream sandwich was the one that we enjoyed the most. We were more than delighted with the delicious item which cannot be expressed in words. Just loved it to the moon.
