In the series of exploring various authentic foods available in Chennai, we came to know about Ammachi Veedu, they serve authentic Kerala Cusine in the hot spot of Velachery and we had their famous Thalassery Biriyani, Kappa and Toddy shop fish curry, Kizhi parotta, Squid fry and finished off with a yummy enalneer payasam.
Thalassery Cuisine refers to the distinct cuisine from Thalassery town of northern Kerala, that has blended in Arabian, Persian, Indian and European styles of cooking as a result of its long history as a maritime trading post. Thalassery is known for its Tellicherry biriani. Unlike other biriyani dishes,Thalassery biryani (Tellicherry biriyaani) that is made using Kaima / Jeerakasala / Jeerakasamba, an Indian aromatic rice instead of the usual basmati rice. The influence of Arabian and Moghul cultures is evident in this cuisine.
Kappa: The origin of this dish can be traced back to when the Portuguese occupied the coasts of Kerala. ... Believed to be a typically Syrian Christian dish, the traditional method of serving this dish used to be in an earthen vessel. It was introduced in 1880-1885 C.E. by the then Maharaja of Travancore, Vishakham Thirunal Rama Varma after a great famine hit the kingdom, as a substitute for rice. Tapioca is widely consumed across Kerala. It is taken as breakfast or as a staple food.
Kheer or payasam is a traditional INDIAN SWEET pudding made using milk, grains, lentils and a sweetener like jaggery or sugar. Grains like rice, millets, broken wheat, semolina/ sooji are most commonly used.
