I know this is a old video but i love coming back to these just to hear how you describe things. So much more realistic and detailed then others.

The UAD plugs are really nice. Hopefully, they join the other UA comps via Spark soon. Great stuff, man!

I would love to see them get UADx versions. They are my favourite UAD comps, but are pretty DSP heavy.

@@JohnMarshall-NI agreed! I actually use the brown/red one on my drum comp (parallel) a lot now

Hope we get a history video for the Fairchild 660/670! It's an iconic vari-mu.

Just started using the Retro 176 emulation of my Antelope Zentour. Thanks for this video, has given me further insight. Like it on my vocal group bus.

The 175B on guitar, 176 on bass, LA3A (more transparant) on keys (if any compression on keys) and the DBX (really punchy) on drums together with Pultec Eq = my setup. For extra depth if it fits the mix, the Fairchild on bass/drums UAD is all you need.

Just got my retro 176 and that thing has a release that goes 2x faster then an 1176, just saying, the thing slaps, especially in classic mode, it's like a cross between an 1176 and a Fairchild

According to UA, the attack time of the 176 is 100 microseconds to 1000 microseconds so at its slowest, it’s attack is 1ms. That’s very fast. I would not call that a slow attack time in any sense.
@mixbustv
@mixbustv 10 дней назад
Nobody talked about absolutes. If it's slower it's slower.

David, can you explain the difference between the Retro 176 and the Retro Sta-Level? Isn't the Sta-Level also vari-mu? I have used both and have difficulty hearing the difference between the two...

UA plugin still discount now, i wish to buy "all around" compressor between farchild or UA 175b & 176, which should i go for ?
@mixbustv
@mixbustv 9 месяцев назад
175/6 is defintiely not an "all around", and no plugin sound like a 670 but their 670 doesn't sound bad and it would be more versatile for sure.

4:04 measure and you get a signal of 0.01s or 2 second it still the same release time after it's a micro bit faster on a 2s signal compress of 30ms around, you can do test with emulation it's the same some micro diff but same in general. I trust more my ears or even pluggin dev like overloud waves, uad than your affirmation, The realease become faster more you push the compression for 1 or 2 db you can get a 200ms, but 10-20db you can get a 100ms release time. Thank so many video on compressor and still not see it seriously

So... That does beg the question, is there actually an 1176 style comp but with a tube amplifier? Do I even mean this lol. Something with the control over the time constants, like an 1176, but with that warm LA2A sound? Can you not just use an LED, rather than a T4 load cell, for instance? Or even a separate transistor circuit that handles gain reduction, combined with a tube amplifier circuit?

Thanks for the video 💖 by the way, I always asked myself if there is any difference between the 1178 and the 1176, is it just a stereo 1176 or is it completely different sonically ?
@mixbustv
@mixbustv 2 года назад
Stereo version but of the Revision H which is kind of a shitty revision
@mixbustv
@mixbustv 2 года назад
The purple is basically a Revision E but done with modern components. It results is probably the brightest of any revision of any brand. I personally find it too bright and brittle, some people love it. (see my video on the history of the 1176 to understand all the revisions) 1178 is a stereo version of the rvev H which as I mentioned above is kind of the ugly child nobody wants, missing the good input and other things

@@mixbustv I like the Pulsar 1178 plugin a lot but it doesn’t sound like a classic 1176 at all. For me it’s highly specific use cases, like a percussion bus where the elements are panned wide. Like it on overheads too sometimes.

Completely different “animals.” Many who use and have used the 175B and 176 say it makes everything sound like a record. Columbia records used to use the 175B/176 on a mix in to Pultechs.
