In video 1778 I FINALLY get to review the IglooHome Smart Lock and, as you will see, am quite impressed with the design, security, and thought that went into it. If you are looking for well designed electronic lock, take a serious look at this one. I got this one on Amazon for about $110. You can find the direct, non-affiliateed link here: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07...

We ended up exchanging this model for the slimmer version ru-vid.comUgkx0jZ_lGlDVJhDnmagEU8gn47cmfPNlLQU because it was too wide for the only door trim area that made sense to mount it on. However, we should have just noted the dimensions prior to purchasing. Otherwise, we love the doorbell. It works perfectly, and the video is very clear, even at night.

@blahorgaslisk7763
@blahorgaslisk7763 3 года назад
MitM would be a pretty advanced. It really requires both planing and time to get the opportunity to intercept the communication and then skill and time to break the encryption. Still interesting to see how hard it would be. Power analysis would probably prove another hard one as it has that internal capacitor that would if not totally mask then at least smooth out the power draw significantly masking the internal working. I think that with the right programming it would be possible to make a power analysis attack impractical if not even impossible. My idea is to buffer the code entry and perform a code verification only once all numbers has been entered. That way no fluctuation should be detectable as the code is entered. Also the code analysis should set a go and a no go flag for each of the numbers, that way the power draw will be the same for a valid digit as for an invalid digit. With some thought to the hardware side it should be possible to almost entirely mask any power fluctuations coming from the electronics.

Limited time access, one time access, tamper logging etc for $100 approx. By heck you could even use it as a time clock for payroll. Or to log security patrols or to allow one time deliveries. I hope this review helps sales as there's a lot of criticism of locksports for pointing out vulnerabilities and outsiders can miss the positive purpose to the hobby. Cheers everyone.

The only problem with any product that depends on an app for any part of its functionality, is that that app only works as long as it's maintained. As soon as the company that made it moves on / folds or whatever, that's the end of that aspect of the product - unless you keep an ever increasing pile of legacy equipment, for chatting to old hardware via obsolete apps! For all 'smart' products l think it remains to be seen how smart a purchase they actually are, even if they don't fall apart when you look at them sternly. I'd say always ensure at least basic functionality is present without app support and be aware that support could disappear at any time, that's before we even get into software security

The weak point for the user over a long time (years) might be the battery cover because if you forget that it can only be opened if the lock is open you can easily deform the security screw(?) with the tool. From a software security point of view, the hard-coded (?) permanent unchangeable PIN is a huge security issue. Since it's the master password & can't be disabled or changed (if that's what Bill meant), the whole lock would become hugely compromised the moment anyone besides the owner gets that code. Can't really tell how hard or easy it is to attack the lock through digital means, but it's probably not hard to extract the master PIN once you've got the firmware.
@bosnianbill
@bosnianbill 3 года назад
Hey John! This is a perfect example of something that is easy to SAY, but not easy to execute. Every time I look at a bluetooth or wireless lock several people end up mentioning how "vulnerable" they are and how easy it is to hack. Yet....scan RU-vid... outside of a controlled laboratory or conference hall these theories haven't been demonstrated. Now, having said that, keeping the 9-digit PIN secret is the same thing as keeping control of your key to a keyed lock. If you lose either of those, the security is definitely compromised - a no brainer. So, before anyone else jumps on the "Bluetooth/Wireless is easy to hack" bandwagon, I'd really like to see you post a video showing how "easy" it is. After all, this is a padlock...not a bank vault. It cost $110...
@bstrickler
@bstrickler 3 года назад
That was my concern as well. But my hope is that if you're securing sensitive stuff and not your back gate or a toolbox with it, you're using something better than this, and have trustworthy employees.
@JohnDoe-bd5sz
@JohnDoe-bd5sz 3 года назад
@@bosnianbill Does the lock have a software update feature. (It seems it has) Usually it is a nightmare for a company to have truly randomized master codes, so they usually get sloppy and make the master codes, based on some algorithm and a seed. If for example they use the Bluetooth MAC as the seed, if someone found out the algorithm, it would be instant access to all access codes, based on a MAC, that the unit itself transmits. In such a case, it would be nice to have firmware updateability to be able to change the code....But still not ideal, as this would mean that the master code would change and the user would need to be able to know the new code.
@i_sometimes_leave_comments
@i_sometimes_leave_comments 3 года назад
For $110, it certainly is a great lock. However, cheaper locks that aren't susceptible to common attacks like shimming are also really good for most people, since not many thieves can proficiently pick locks like you & LPL, so similar security for a much lower price. Then again, I'm mostly interested in stealth & digital attacks and personally prefer physical bypass & wireless hacking over lock picking (though I do like lock picking). I'd love to test these smart locks if I can get them and the necessary tools. Another point for smart locks: they almost never get security patches. If someone finds software vulnerabilities, even if the manufacturer sends out patches, few people would know about it, and even fewer would bother to apply the patch, if patching can even easily be done. Also, if you can unlock if from anywhere in the world, anyone who manages to get the lock's ID (may be by shoulder surfing) would be able to have something running to brute-force the PIN. Not likely, but still a valid vector. ... but then again, it's probably much easier to break your windows or door.
@bosnianbill
@bosnianbill 3 года назад
@@JohnDoe-bd5sz Again, an excellent THEORY. Easy to SAY and for a few people that is proof enough. But me? Show me. Theories are 100% worthless unless you can demonstrate their viability. Show me a video of you doing it. Then, when you're done I'll laugh at how long it took and how much the equipment cost to crack a $100 padlock. Then I'll use a $50 die grinder and zip it off in less than a minute. There's THEORY, and there's APPLICATION. Sometimes technology makes people lose sight of that.

I think I'll stick to ABUS disc locks for my gates, as there is no internet connection to worry about, or software to worry about being hacked.

Now the question: is their wall mount key box up to the same standard...? (or a nice 'dumb' key box that isn't a major security hole)

Bill, you gotta check their deadbolt lock too. It has a key entry in addition to the pin and app that I suspect is pickable. Is it worth buying?

Okay. I'm curious on the door line of IglooHome's products now!

Would be really cool to have a feature which measures continuity through the shackle, and sends an alarm if the circuit is broken without the lock being open.

I am not a fan of internet of crap stuff normally but this is quite a nice lock!

From the construction point of view and features it seems a very good lock. The big question is: How good is the software for it and on it? It runs some kind of software and that's a huge attack vector.

Great review Bill. Some joker on eBay is asking £148.35 with free shipping! That's pretty much double the US price. $100 = £75.85 at the moment. (19/09/2020) But it's £99.99 on Amazon, which is what I've come to accept, despite not being exactly happy. 😉😉😉
