In this video I'll review the new master lock bluetooth smart padlock. It is a good idea, but turned out to be junk...
Master Lock's new Bluetooth padlock reviewed, tested and mangled into submission. Not the best choice to secure anything of value. Sorry Master Lock...

Masterlock should be ashamed putting this absolute garbage out at a level 8 security rating. People actually trust those ratings and they are being fooled by a company that clearly has zero concern with quality assurance. I hope they watch this, and do some SERIOUS reevaluation of their entire approach to the industry of "securing" valuables.

I really like the bit at the end where you discuss where it might and might not be suitable-something I find missing from a lot of "this sucks" reviews on RU-vid. In particular, any discussion of security is meaningless without a discussion of the threat model. Is your adversary a 12-year-old who wants to steal your $2 of lunch money? A curious neighbor? A bike thief? A meth'd out smash-and-grabber? A corrupt TSA agent? A skilled professional burglar? A government intelligence agency? A missile strike? A nuclear blast? In my opinion, a proper discussion of a security device indicates the types of threats it can and can't stop and how it compares to other devices that are similar either in price or protection profile. I think this review ticks those boxes. Kudos.

I'd imagine it's like every cheap mass consumer product. The big brands don't need to be fancy or high end, they just need to be on every store shelf, and be reasonably secure. My fence is locked with a masterlock. Because they're cheap, and I really just need it to keep the fence from blowing open, and a random toddler from walking into my back yard. I mean it's like any hobby/product. There will be high end super secure and nicely made expensive versions for enthusiasts and professionals. Then there are the cheap pieces of shit you buy in a walmart.

True but a lock that costs $60-$90 and can be opened with 3 whacks from standard hammer can't exactly be called a lock can it.

Don't give masterlock too much credit for "water resistant." Simple circuits which are so low voltage, water isn't a good enough conductor to really bugger much up. Most electronics, as they come, are actually surprisingly water "resistant." Looking at the bubbles which came out every time you dunked it, it was clear the lock had really no resistance to water ingress, decorative rubberized cover or no.
@TechLeftBehind
@TechLeftBehind 8 лет назад
To Master's credit, there is a conformal coating on the PCB. That would provide quite a bit of water resistance. But no, the casing is nowhere near water resistant, and the water is liable to do some damage to the cheap little motor powering the unlock mechanism.
@whatfor5
@whatfor5 8 лет назад
Or eat at the battery terminals. Or likely foul whatever they're using for buttons in there. (probably membrane switches I'd guess)
@bart416
@bart416 6 лет назад
It's usually the corrosion that gets it over time when exposed to water. Now salt water can be a different story, but that conformal coating ought to fix that :)
@johns7734
@johns7734 6 лет назад
Bart Plovie - The conformal should protect the circuit board and the switch pad is probably sealed. However, I would love to see what a salt water soak would do to the actuator motor.
@_decky4ever_
@_decky4ever_ 6 лет назад
The motor is'nt the weakest point, it's have 2 oblivious problems. 1. If u pull off the rubber it's very oblivious u can pry it apart with a simple screwdriver .... (becouse it's a flipcase), or crash with a stronger plier :) 2. battery terminal will corrode away in a day or 2, if its got rain, but the cable from the battery to the pcb, will even faster, 2 metals contact and copper is the weaker :) And if the cable rip.... u never will be open this lock again :)

Just using a $2 masterlock combo lock because the boss isn't likely to bypass it, but it'd be nice to make it a bit tougher given the sensitivity of my notes. Pretty easy to shim or find the combination on the cheap combos, as you and LPL have shown. Keep up the good work Bill.

I have never picked a lock. I like watching videos about locks, though, and greatly enjoy your channel. My skills lie in software and computers. So when I see a lock like these, my first thought is that even if the locking mechanism is rock solid, I would bet money that the software is junk. Companies do not take software seriously. They do not approach it like any other kind of engineering, and since software is far more complex than almost any other kind of engineering, that results in absolutely terrible systems that are full of holes. I would love to see someone run WireShark and sniff the Bluetooth traffic (pretty sure WireShark supports that) and then try fuzzing the thing over Bluetooth. There is actually an online "game" for programmers/hackers called Microcorruption that is based on the idea of exactly locks like this, and you specially craft inputs to screw up the software and either dump out the key or just unlock the lock directly. If the locks weren't so expensive I'd probably pick one up just to play with and see how hard it would be to get into. Would be very interesting to see what signal, for instance, gets sent over bluetooth to the lock to tell it to disable locker mode. Since you don't have to disable that with the lock itself it appears, it is still actually listening to bluetooth, just not sending out an 'open request' when someone pushes its buttons. Wouldn't surprise me if you could make a universal 'disable locker mode' app. Or an app that just tries all possible keys. Hopefully it uses something better than a 16k keyspace on the bluetooth end of things...

I wonder if it's susceptible to powerline attacks. Brownout for example. If you drain the battery somehow and then use that port on the bottom to supply power, you can reduce the voltage so that the microchip can't function properly, and if you get lucky, code that runs the motor could be run. I've done this with a few simple electronic items before. By lowing the powering voltage you can get all sorts of crazy shit to happen. The most interesting things are when the device starts running code that shouldn't be able to be accessed.
@MatthewVaras
@MatthewVaras 6 лет назад
It's almost certainly got undervoltage lockout circuitry in place, as most all power supply IC's include it as standard. This disables power to the system in the event of power dropping below a threshold. It's very important for secondary lithium cells, but I'm not as sure for primary.
@MrLastlived

I'd honestly be surprised if Master put any significant protective measures in their code as it currently stands. It makes me want to buy one just to see if I can't fiddle with it from the normal bluetooth connection. I mean bluetooth is already infamous for all kinds of security faults.

It would be very interesting to measure the voltage at those "battery dead" contacts. You could do a power analysis on it to see any peculiarities for good combinations vs bad combinations. You might be able to guess the combo like that if they have not enough bypass capacitors, or if they have bad coding practices.
@Elektrotechniker
@Elektrotechniker Год назад
That is something that Dave from the EEVBlog did on an electronic Safe! And to be honest I doubt you could do any useful Signal analysis from the outer Battery contacts. They will lead straight to the little sot-223 linear regulator (AMS1117 or similar) where the Voltage is being set to either 5V or 3.3V for the secondary side with all the logic circuitry. You would have to sniff on that secondary side to even have the slightest chance to catch some meaningful data!

Good review Bill! My thoughts; The hasp is locked by the two cylinders, which in turn are held apart by the arrow shaped blocking piece. When the hasp/lock body is hit, the two cylinders will impart a force against the spring holding the blocking piece in the locked position due to it being angled....and the lock yields.. If the arrow had a stepped flat shoulder holding the cylinders in instead of an angle form there would be no imparted force against the spring. The angle of the blocking piece is it's Achilles Heel! Given that the lock body does not yield.

I have been thinking about making a club at the college I'm attending now where I intend to show a lot of your videos and mainly help my community become a safer place. I haven't spoken to the college yet about what I am planning on doing but I do want to have events like chaining up a bunch of locks and having two people compete in a race to see who can unlock the locks faster. And for more experienced lock pickers have them put the locks on the other persons chain. And who ever has fewer lock by the end of the time limit will gets prizes. I also hope it will be okay to use your videos. Thank you for the education and we will definitely stay safe and stay legal! 😄

GFmanaic My general experience has been that in an effort to cut costs most places ditch the couple extra parts for reverse-polarity protection (diode) and over-voltage protection (crowbar-circuit) in favor of putting a line in the directions saying "use only approved battery be sure to insert correctly". It's surprising how little it takes microcontrollers to go pop.

Yeah it is common in low end electronics. I can see the diode on this particular device however (17:29, D9). I am pretty sure also that at 17:33, the 2 transistors and the four resistors form an overvoltage protection circuit. I can also see a fuse chip. It looks well made is what I am saying.

It's a pity. If they took this lock mechanism, which seems pretty solid by itself, and put it in a traditional Masterlock casing, it wouldn't be a half bad lock. The battery compartment wouldn't need to be in the secure portion of the casing, you could just run wires through where the keyhole would normally be, with the battery in a user openable compartment for easy access without becoming a weak spot. Just needs to be secure enough to stop some prankster from easily stealing the battery and giving you a bit of annoyance. One bypass for this sort of lock is if you could get a bit of wire in there and short the locking servo directly to the battery, but with plastic coated contacts for water resistance, and the fact that you'd be doing this through the tiny hole the wires for the battery go through, around a couple corners (no direct path between the hole and the part of the circuit board with the servo!), I think this would be near impossible to actually pull off. The button pad is also a vulnerability since drilling through it gives you direct access to the circuitry and the inside of the lock. But you could put it on its own miniature board on the outside of the secure portion and wire it into the inside through a little hole just like the battery. Then an attack on the buttons will just render the lock inoperable except by Bluetooth. But if you're going to be pulling out power tools like a drill anyway, it's questionable if this vulnerability is actually any faster than just cutting the chain or shank with a grinder. Properly made, a smart lock will offer just as much physical security as any good lock. Even a possibility vulnerability to a cyberattack, which is fairly easy for a half competent security programmer to prevent due to tiny surface area of the software, is fairly hard for a casual thief to exploit since it would be very dependant on the specific lock in question. On the other hand, if someone were to do a cyberattack, they could do it from their laptop while sitting on the bench ten feet away, thus performing the attack in public with no one being the wiser. But computer security is a well researched field, and provided you follow industry best practices, quite hard to crack, especially without the normal vulnerabilies of central servers with login information for everyone and weak passworks that can be brute forced with access to a user database breach. The lock's password is on a little piece of paper that comes with the lock, in the lock's memory, and on your phone, and that's it. And being a string of 15 or so random letters and digits, is not easy to crack.

@Lizardwarrior1 8 лет назад
Yep, and push some buttons too to make sure you're running a current through as much of the electronics as possible to guarantee a short. Then again, the water may have not been getting into the electronics compartment in the first place, so your mileage may vary.
@Hexalyse

Yep, if the circuit is all resin-coated or something like this as it appears it is... then all the salt in the world wouldn't change anything. Only the motor seems to be a weak point.

@j4ck3t
@j4ck3t 8 лет назад
Won´t do anything for two reasons : if the standard polarity of the motor is set to close, a short will only close the lock. Secondly The battery is not connected to the motor but first has to go via the circuit board. The circuit board has several protections build into it, so in case of a short it will stop passing current. As bill said the electronics are very well made, top quality from what I can see, the lock it self, not so :P
@fastnoc
@fastnoc 8 лет назад
salt water wouldn't have changed anything. Circuit boards are covered in something called conformal and are sealed. you could dunk the board itself in salt water with nothing protecting it and it would be fine. it's meant for long term protection from almost any air born/water corosions

Love the video. Two things: 1) I assume that the software is not open source, and therefore not available for audit. The reason I ask, we don't know if there are backdoors in the code - even just a reduction of the keyspace (most typical type of backdooring...) 2) Unless one looks at each chip inside, there could also be a hardware backdoor. Don't get me wrong, I'm actually thinking about getting one. Love the idea of a BLE lock. Would I appreciate someone doing the above two items, you bet. I wouldn't know where to start on either, I just know that these would give even more confidence in this product.

Pretty cool design, minus the hammer weakness. Most of the time, if it says "water resistant" it generally refers to being in low pressure water. If you wanted to damage it with water, submerging it and pressurizing it would most certainly work. Did it have an IP rating listed anywhere? If it did, it would inform you as to how much pressure it would take.

Just drill through the front of the lock (where there is no metal housing) directly into the spot where the actuator blocks the shackle motion. In the video he said the actuator pulls down that arrowhead shaped bar but that is incorrect, that piece of metal on the actuator arm goes into the slot and blocks the arrowhead piece from moving down when the shackle is pulled up. Move the metal piece out of the way and the shackle can be pulled out. So drill that small piece of metal and force the shackle out. If you drilled a small hole in the backside of the case exactly where the actuator blocking metal piece sits I believe you could then force the actuator to rotate out of the way and open the lock. Since the hold would be behind the plastic housing you could remove the plastic, drill the small hole, open the lock, replace the housing and nobody would be the wiser. The plastic housing for the battery is directly next to the two wires used to power the actuator. Cutting out a section of the housing would give you access to those two wires which you could then use to cause the actuator to open. Since the battery covers where the hole would be, this also could done without anyone noticing.

My guess for why it resisted the water so well is because usually water pressure needs to be higher to damage electronics like that. If you had put it on the bottom of the lake for about 30 seconds it might not be in such good shape.
