Converting the HP HSTNS PD29 to 13.8V, trying to fix the Over Voltage Protection circuit.
Check • #188 HSTNS-PD29 Over V... to see the real fix of the OVP
I keep getting asked questions regarding the OVP circuit and can it be defeated? Will it does not affect me as i just keep the output below it and it seems happy. But as there were a lot of questions i thought that a bit of investigation was required.
This video is the result of the first look at the components on the side board to see if I could find one that seemed to control the voltage trip point.
You will have to watch to see if this video has a successful outcome or just raises more questions.
I've not provided links to the datasheets are they all seemed easy to find on Google with just entering their part numbers.
Please comment if you think that more investigation is required or you know where more information on this PSU can be found.

On the back of the vertical board is a LM393 comparator (ST393A) You can add 56k resistor to pin 3 and ground to increase the OVP. You have to unplug the fan connector to see the 393. You can now adjust over 14V. I posted some pics on the eevblog forum. HSTNS-PD30

Do you know what the pot to the right of the voltage adjustment pot does, i seem to have moved it setting and can't remember where it should be set?

not sure what that pot is for. I can measure the voltage on that pot on monday

@@amundsen575 Thanks, It can't be too important as it can be accessed from the outside, but would be nice to put it back in the correct position. or know what it does. Doing a follow up video with your information, and after telling everyone that these are not safe to work on as there is high power rectified mains inside. I go and give myself a nice jolt trying to turn it off my pulled the mains lead out the back. But I live to tell the tale; good thing the camera was not rolling as the air went blue.

A chanllenge it is, and a pain in the butt as well. changeing the voltage to 13.6V video is the best viewing video i've done and was constantly ask how to defeat the Over Voltage Protection. As for the use i what it for , i did not need to look for a fix. but so many have asked it looks like i'm going to have to try and find it. So it's a pain of my own making.

I'm assuming this was recorded with the new camera, looks good and clear! As far as the power supply, I'll just have to watch and see what you find. I'll be looking forward for the next as always! Happy new year again!

Yep new camera was used, its going to take a while to get the best out of it. I also need to get the dummy battery so I can run it on external power.

Im working on a 1200W HSTNS-PD30 ,which uses the same vertical mounted pcb as the HSTNS PD29 that you show.I tested all 8 op amps as well - only on the top side of the board - no OVP found, must be on the bottom side, as you said, I will also buy an additional PS in case I release the smoke! If I find OVP, I will post

Thanks for the info; I have thought of taking it apart to have a look behind. But with the voltages involved I’m a bit reluctant to do it or show it rectified mains with 750Ws or more behind it could be a show stopper in more than one sense. And I don’t any heart stopping moments in one of my video, either mine or a viewer. Will be great to find out where it is as there are a lot of people who would love to set it a bit higher.

Question is, how much voltage swing have you got.? I may need to reduce the output, as I want to charge a 100ah Lipo battery with a constant current board. This involes a booster from a lower voltage to get 14.6v at a constant current of around 30 amp.
@TheEmbeddedHobbyist
@TheEmbeddedHobbyist 11 месяцев назад
I've can't remember how much range the voltage adjustment pot has, i just wanted to push it up to just above 13.8V as that's about the normal range for powering mobile ham radio's. i did not want to go much above this as I've not looked at the voltage range of the output caps.

Interesting but not quite the result i was hoping for. i was hoping for a clear output to switch high or low, not just change by a volt or so. so maybe i'll have to extend the connections and see if i can run the board away from the bottom board.

@TheEmbeddedHobbyist Год назад
Sorry, no. this is the first and only server PSU I’ve looked at. i did the video as i could not find any information on it. if there is a pot that can be accessed from the outside that adjust the voltage a bit that might be a good place to start. Just remember these have rectified mains at high power on the boards inside. They can easily kill; you should leave them to discharge before opening the case to work on them. In my while doing my last video i did get a shock of it and it hurt quite a bit.

@@TheEmbeddedHobbyist there are five pots inside the PD19 =)
@TheEmbeddedHobbyist
@TheEmbeddedHobbyist Год назад
@@VoltageLP I expect the OVP will not be a pot, but one of the pots that can be accessed from the outside (if any) will be the voltage trim. once you have found the trim pot, then you can start putting a resistor to alter it's adjustment range. then your need to find the ovp control to increase that as well.
