22 mag is a great idea born at end of fifties for give us a real inovation...... 17hmr its fun shooting caliber of end of century. Inuits hunts enormous elks with a 22 mag its an extremelly lethal round close of an AR15 223 in far shooting ..... and oposite extreme ( years around are years of 500 SW and lot of big technology bets) INTRINSIC VALUE OF 22 WMR ( IN RIFLE) is just enormous like 357 mag after 38 sp.. (in handgun) 17 hmr is a good round not a revolution. i advice a multibarrel !! Cool to own a 22 lr/22wmr/ 17 hmr in one rifle.

I made an observation about 17 HMR vs 22 Mag when shooting them back to back in the wind, at 100 yards. I was getting 3" drift with the 17 and 1" with the 22 Mag. Makes hitting in gusty conditions easier with the maggie.

Very happy with my .22 WMR rifle. Bought it back in 2002 when the .17 HMR was just being introduced. Wasn't sure if the .17 HMR would take off or not. Both are capable rounds. I have no regrets on going with the .22 WMR. Its a solid performer out to 125 yards or so. Beyond that range, I will just switch over to .223 or .22-250.

They both hit on the corner. 17hmr did what it always does, blew up on impact. The 22wmr expanded and caused more damage with more penetration. You can drop a hog with the wmr, don't think I'd try it with a hmr.
@rossgreenzweig

This comes down to ammo selection, those TNT rounds for the 17hmr are made to explode upon impact compared to other hollow points and fmj rounds, hence the name TNT on the box.

Who-Tee-Who, Thanks. I have been shooting the 22 WMR since the mid to late Sixties, it is probably my favorite cartridge. I was not surprised at the out come of the 17 HMR vs the 22 WMR. I was very surprised at the out come of the 22 LR vs 22 WMR. The one thing I did notice that you skipped over was the bubbles left on the top and both sides of the clay block, shot with the 22 WMR it appeared to me that the 22 LR did appear to leave as large of wound channel as the 22 WMR. But when I consider the bulges on both sides and top left by the 22 WMR, I would have to say the 22 WMR delivered considerable more energy, and even shock. I thank you again for your time and knowledge of shooting, please keep up the good work!! Vaya Con Dios my good friend..

Good vid. A bit surprised at all those results actually. I’d love to see this test with the 17WSM, maybe in comparison to the 17HMR. I’ve recently acquired a 17WSM, and it seems to really do the business accuracy wise, and it does seem to pack quite a bit of punch for what it is. 20 grain projectile at 3000 fps dies sound tantalising, to say the least. And the clay block thing would really highlight that. Cheers from Down Under.

I've always been a big fan of .22 magnums. It's the bullet weight that gives them the edge. I've done so many ballistic tests back in the 1980's. Yeah. I used to get Aussie made Winchester Maxx ‘PowerPoint’ 22Mag Subsonic 45gr JHPs. Great varmint round, and could easily take anything up to the size of the Fallow deer out to 100m, here in Tasmania (excepting our limits on minimum .243 caliber). I was able to get headshots on bunnies and feral cats out to around 85m. Unfortunately they stopped making it. I managed to get a carton of 1000 rounds ( the last whole one my supplier was able to get. I’m hoping that something new is brought to the market by the end of the year, because I’ll have real problems with the critters otherwise. Might have to revert to 22LR. Shock horror.

A few observations... I suspect the results from both rounds would have been more violent/dramatic/damaging if the clay blocks weren't half frozen. I was surprised how small the exit hole was on the 22 Mag, again that might be due to the block being half frozen. I'm very impressed by all of the damage caused by a 17 grain projectile! Finally there are faster 22 Mag rounds, that CCI round even comes in a higher velocity +V version. Fun vid Adam!

The 22 LR just bores the hole all the way through. The 22 mag has enough speed and bullet design to expand and dump more energy in the block, there's a big chamber inside of it. the 17HMR just explodes and dumps all it has at contact. I was on a Facebook squirrel forum and they like the 17hmr for laser tight head shots BUT hit em in the body and don't worry bout picking up anything but stew meat. Some guys quote.

I have both of them and have lately been leaning towards my .17HMR over my 22 Win Mag. Used the .17 with Hornandy 20g hollow points on a hog hunt this past Saturday. Dropped a hog with a well placed ear shot at 65 yards. Took a few rabbits all the way out to 125 yards later in the day. How do you add pictures to these comments so I can post a pic of the hog to show how effective a round it is?

I think the 17hmr gets a better initial impact energy but doesn't carry through very well because of its weight and the 22 mag really holds its energy and has more overall energy
@t_c5266
@t_c5266 Год назад
the 22 mag in this example does have more overall energy. The 17 has about 330 joules while the 22 has about 420 joules. surprising since the 17 is moving a lot faster, and kinetic energy increases much greater with velocity.

Modern, current production 22lr is just so versatile, more than it's ever been. I love it. You can get lightweight, hyper velocity varmint rounds or heavy subsonic suppressor rdy stuff. Rounds like Velocitors that will (when fired from a full length bbl), mimic energies close to that of 380 from a pocket pistol. Pretty good option for defense from a rifle IMO. Love some 22 for sure. I would love to see these comparisons in handguns at room ranges (fifteen to thirty feet) in the clay blocks for people who, for whatever reason, want/have to use a small caliber bedside gun. Noisewise, recoil, size, amount of rounds in some, really makes them a viable option for some. Before all of the haters come in, I know bigger is better but if you really don't think they are an option for some people, feel free to stand twenty feet away and take a few rounds and tell me how it feels. ;-) And I have multiple guns (long and short) in multiple calibers and carry a .380 or 9mm myself most of the time. I am also a pretty good shot (even under pressure) and would consider a .22LR or mag with a bunch of rounds as an option since I know I can put all of the rounds in the important places pretty quickly. :-) I would still love to see the two and the damage they do in the clay at realistic ranges. Great videos and always entertaining!

I think a better/closer comparison would have been the 25 grain 22 Mag ammo vs the 17HMR. Hornady makes a 20 XTP load for the HMR. At least the 25 grain Mag load would have been closer to the 17 grain bullet. While I do agree that 22 Mag would win regardless, I believe the off center shot with the 17HMR made a difference in this test.

I debated long and hard about 17 HMR vs 22WMR. I settled on the 22WMR, because it gives you the option of shooting the standard 40 grain, or a 30 grain hollow point made by CCI, which is obviously faster than the 40 grain. It bridges the gap nicely between the 17 HMR and the standard 22 WMR load. It is a very effective round. Options!

Great video again ! A coyote would have a bad day with either one ……but I’m a 22 mag owner and fan so I’m gonna stay put with it . Appreciate ya and God Bless

Out to 150-200 yards I’m taking the 22 WMR all day. Past that is where the 17 HMR shines due to its flatter trajectory.
@davidh9659
@davidh9659 2 года назад
Past 200yards the 17HMR is going to be waaaay down energywise. For smaller type varmints and the likes, sure.
@MulletDestructur
@MulletDestructur 2 года назад
@@davidh9659 to be fair, neither the .22 or .17 will have a ton of energy left at those distances, but it’ll be easier to hit the target with the 17, simply because of the trajectory.

What a great job of showing the ability of 22cal and mag to I can justify the difference in price.

The .17 hmr is definitely the superior round for its intended purpose: Varminting. You need to expend all that energy with less than 6 inches of penetration, and even though the .22 wmr has more steam, it's wasted in the dirt behind your target and not in the target itself.
@armedfarm3429

Wasted? I don't think so, 2 holes are better than 1 any day. Shoot coyotes with these 2 holes bleed far more and faster. A 17 in the lungs will raise hell with a lung shot but the 22 mag does it better between the little rounds.
@Luckyrider1958

17 is a frangible round IIRC.. designed to break up and make several would channels... all energy delivered TO the target... maximum shock...22 mag blew thru....
@bee-deeell4709
@bee-deeell4709 Год назад
@@Luckyrider1958 so the true test would have been to use TNT frangible rounds of both 17 and 22mag, or both non-frangible rounds, as the TNT rounds perform very differently from the standard rounds from my personal experience... that would have made it more interesting!

I thought that I saw part of the .22WMR bullet inside the clay block in the first test. What was the rifle that you used to shoot the .22LR? Another interesting thing about the .22LR block test is that the bullet didn't expand the block at all. With the .22WMR, the block was expanded significantly, particularly on the top. All of the energy from the .22LR went directly through the block on a cone shape.

The weight of the 22 helped but I still use the 17 for small game. I've never had much luck with the ballistic tip CCI ammo but I'll try the hollow points to see if I can get better groups. Won't buy the ammo I used to use for reasons that transpired this last year.

Who doesn't love some hot rimfire action? LOVE IT, cheap bing bangs, cheap ammo, and tight flung groups, if you don't like them apples, you wrong. My friend, if you really want to impress people and seperate your awesome really fun videos from their junk, please use the proper word "versus" and not use the wrong word "verse." vs. = Versus, that's fancy Latin. The clay videos are my favorite, thanks for doing another!

I’ve always been a fan of the larger diameter hole. Speed is impressive and has it’s place but a bigger hole in a critter works. Stuff leaks out better.
@jaydunbar7538
@jaydunbar7538 2 года назад
Size of the hole is more bullet dependent, this isn’t the 1800s with nothing but hard cast lead. With a good bullet selection and the speed to make it expand correctly and a tiny projectile can punch far above its weight class.
