in other words, IIHS test is designed to either for you to walk away or die. Whereas the NHTSA test is designed for you to survive the crash but become crippled after a crash and a drain on insurance industry.
If I recall correctly, only three automakers were truly the ones responsible for pushing safety features to be standard, Volvo, Mercedes Benz (Daimler AG), and Subaru.
Its sad that America doesn’t have a manufacturer in that list. Asia (Japan) and Europe, thats ok. Two out of 4 main continents have a manufacturer that somewhat cares about that sort of thing. But not North America. Not South America. But North America in particular is appalling with how many automakers it has, and how many markets they sell to.
I remember when my truck was tboned and was totaled by a 2012 Ford Fusion. The Ford Fusion was also totaled but while the Fusion hit head on into my truck, the damage wasn’t spread evenly. My truck ended up doing a 180°. Also the passenger front side of the Ford Fusion was smashed in more than the drivers side because the lady who was driving it hit the back corner of my cab and the front of the pick up box. The passenger side of the Ford Fusion hit the back corner of the cab which has no crumple zones and absorbed much more damage and impact than the drivers side since the drivers front end hit my pick up which is where one of the crumple zones is. It also is where the wheel well was. I remember her car looked recognizable on the drivers side where as her passenger side was totally smashed in and the head looks light obliterated 💁♂️
2021 and the government STILL has not added offset crash test to its list of crash tests and STILL rates cars, SUVs, and trucks that perform poorly in IIHS as 5 stars. The problem has NOT been solved.
Agreed! Also, don't forget the driver side small overlap test. The overpriced outdated and overhyped as "World's Safest Car" Tesla Model S did relatively poorly in the driver side small overlap test. I couldn't wait for the government to roast Tesla and its liar CEO Elon Musk!

Automakers then: Don't listen to the insurance institute. Their tests are beyond biased, too fast, and representative of an incredibly rare crash mode. Automakers now: **make it a point to include positive IIHS performance in advertising their vehicles**

00crashtest it’s not poor people who drive civics. It’s people who don’t need a big car and like the civic. It gets good gas mileage and sometimes a small car is all you need.
